  • Hard News: Relieving Ambiguity,

Chris Finlayson ... is keeping everything: even the often-pilloried (but in reality, tightly-accounted and effective) PACE scheme.

I'm really glad to hear this. I was on the dole in 2002 - 2003 and spent the first year on the regular dole, which included compulsory attendance on the spirit-crushing, soul-destroying WorkTrack programme. It worked well getting the forklift operators a job, but didn't seem to know what to do with me.

In the second year, I moved to PACE and did a part-time, year-long course called New Space. Less about CV writing and more about geting over those personal obstacles. It helped me kick my own arse and led me to getting a job that I loved, which then led to getting another job that I love. Thanks, Work & Income!

And my fellow course attendees weren't waster/hippy/bludger types. They were all intelligent, talented people who knew they wanted to make a living from their art, but weren't quite sure how to go about it. The ones I've heard from have gone on to good things too.

I would even consider PACE to be a harder than going on the regular dole. I get the feeling that people on PACE might be on there for a while, but once they get off, they stay off. I'm glad National has recognised PACE's value.

  • 180 Seconds: I Veitch, You Veitch, We…,

I'd like to see Craig's 180 Seconds always presented like this.

calculate an algorithm, [...] you're using an eponym.

Oh, that was named after Al Gore, right?

    ;)

  • Hard News: User-generated Speechification,

In today's Observer, they take a look at "critics vs bloggers", i.e. professional critics whose reviews appear in printed media versus amateur critics whose reviews appear in blogs, and the ever blurring overlap.

  • Hard News: User-generated Speechification,

This is possibly not totally relevant, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway: the last time I bought a newspaper was in April, and that was for the sole purpose of using to pack my crockery when I was moving to Wellington.

  • Hard News: Consumer,

And mock all you like, but not everyone speaks in a monotone.

Oh dear. I wasn't mocking, I swear! It's just that you have such a distinct way of writing, especially compared to must other PA System regulars - you write lots and you use bold to highlight select words, with the end results being multiple paragraphs with select words jumping out like some sort of secret Da Vinci Code-style message.

P.S. Thanks for the explanation of MMS. How strange that iPhones don't have it!

Robyn, I saw your wink, even if he didn't.

Thanks, Jackie! I'm glad you noticed!

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

I love the photo that accompanies that article. It looks very carefully styled, like it should be an album cover. Notorious T.O.N.Y?

  • Hard News: Consumer,

Its primary purpose is making and receiving calls, and sending and receiving short messages. On any other phone, that'd include MMS.

What is MMS and why is so important?

Or perhaps I could rephrase that question Matthew-Poole-style:

Could someone tell me what MMS is? I have heard of it but I do not know what it is! I believe it is important technology for cellphones, but I am not sure exactly what it is!

    ;)

  • Hard News: User-generated Speechification,

    Ah, thanks for the descriptions!

Recently I saw I poll on Stuff.co.nz asking if it should be illegal for pregnant women to drink. The majority of respondents said yes. I was annoyed but also knew that there would be no reflection of this at Stuff. So I went over to The Hand Mirror blog and found a recent post discussing pregnancy and drinking.

So it was Stuff's paid content and user-generated content that inspired me to find out an alternate perspective that happened to be user-generated content.

  • Hard News: User-generated Speechification,

Is paid content where the author has been paid to write it or where the consumer pays to read it?

And wot is "consumer generated media"?

(I feel like I should actually already know these answers in a professional capacity...)
