I must admit all I see is an almost bankrupt city council and a humongous rates bill in my future for a stupid stadium we couldn't possibly afford - the sports or games or whatever they are are a sideshow I've decided I've already decided I want to avoid like the plague

This is the source of my RWC negativity

oh yeah - and watching people play a game is not sport either, it is entertainment - most people coming to NZ for the RWC are coming for the entertainment

I have a very simple rule - if you're paid to do it it's not a sport it's a business

  • Hard News: When the Weather is the News,

I lived with a coal range when I lived in Waitati years ago ... it heated the water - the place had an outside bathroom (and an outside toilet). I had to lug home sacks of coal in my Mini (just room for one in the boot) - I forgot to get coal before xmas one year (back when everything shut) and had no hot water for a month. I hated that thing - I liked the vaguely romantic idea of it but it was old, it smoked and was decidedly no fun ...

  • Hard News: When the Weather is the News,

rain turned to sleet here on the hill, about half of our snow has melted in our back yard, just not in the street - schools are closed again.

My son in his cold student flat was seen yesterday riding a couch on a ladder down his street

The squall that's just coming in right now seems colder (more snow, less rain in the sleet) - we'll run out of gas today or tomorrow (still have firewood for a week or two)

David I hope you guys miss the rest of it and things warm up

Sigh - Auckland has it tough - we giggled at the excited Aucklanders on TV last night - if we're lucky, and the current rain/melt doesn't refreeze like it did last time, we'll be able to get our car out tomorrow ....

I just figure this is an attempt to find an other to demonise for the election - it' not like National are going to get many votes from this (under 18) demographic

    Posted by a friend:

    Dear Mr. Murdoch,

We've all been feeling a bit shagged and fagged and fashed, it being a night of no small expenditure.

Per our agreement, the money deposited into the bank hole - though quite sufficient for two night's worth of the ol' firely sparkly neglects to take into account a minor issue.

We would like to discuss re-negotiating a few small terms of our slapping hands and shaky-shaky of a few nights ago.

Specifically, the issue of bonding some of the younger participants droogs out of jail lest they miss testing for their A-level qualifications.

We look forward to your reply. You'll find one or more of us waiting for one of your agents at the Korova milkbar.

Remember, initiative comes to thems that wait. And pays again.

    Ta,

    Alex

I also saw Patu! Merata Mita’s great documentary on the '81 tour twice in the US - once in the PFA at a NZ film festival, in a tiny theatre - there were some rather snooty expats in the row behind me who kept commenting how they couldn't see what all the fuss was about, and then again at the much larger old UC theatre in an anti-apartheid film festival, right before the live Rocky Horror midnight show - when Muldoon appeared there was a chorus of boos from the back row which was picked up by scattered kiwis in the packed out audience
