    how crass

It seems like a reasonable judgement about the "mainstream" reaction (right-wing, if you like) to what Sue achieved, which was removal of the defence of "reasonable force".
The public view is that it was anti-smacking ; it never was that.
The way it was portrayed in the media was largely "fake news", and the public disapproval flowed from that.
I don't follow the attack on Tom for expressing what seems obvious.

    change the subject.

Before we do , just a thought . . . the covert filming of "esoteric ceremonies etc "(including pedophilia) has political utility (blackmail) as long as the practices are not widely socially acceptable.
The threat of being outed as "gay" has lost its utility for the purposes of coercion : pedophilia , much less so. Arguably not at all.
Let's see what Wikileaks has got in the archives . . .

I think that should be "no straight thing was ever made " But the meaning remains.

    But Kant also said :-

"Have patience awhile; slanders are not long-lived. Truth is the child of time; erelong she shall appear to vindicate thee."

    We shall see.

On a more serious note , I think that Trump could use a decent barber. Just an observation :-

    another universe

    Their universe.
    FIFY

    Fools that they are.

Of course , it is difficult to avoid the game ; but possible to have limited participation with zero committment.

The sun will certainly “come up” tomorrow, and there is the promise of more rain, ensuring continuing life.
Forgive the ebullience ; holding my sleeping 3-day old grandaughter for an hour yesterday, I observed that her world looks at least as good as that of her great-great- great grand- parents upon their arrival in Godzone

    So what?
    Plus ça change. . . .

The game is still BRICS vs the “Five Eyes”. The ball is the global reserve currency. The goal is maintenance/ reduction (depending on which side you are on) of global dominance/ exploitation by our team.

The score is still – Brazil sidelined ; India severely injured (via demonetisation) but playing on ; Africa under increasing Chinese occupation (to secure the abundant resources) ; Russia holding its own (and likely to continue doing so) ; and on the bench is rookie Iran (looking fresh with the nuclear deal).

Players are fired up , but an all out brawl is not likely.
Trump changes nothing. The masters of the universe will place their bets as usual.

    Follow the money.

shut down huge chunks of the dairy sector

That will happen , probably for economic reasons, but animals will still be eating the grass, and voiding the inevitable nitrate ; but that will not be the major factor in the degradation of the rivers.
Phosphorus entering the rivers will still be the biggest problem.

The likelihood of a huge chunk of the export sector being closed down is ultimately dependent on an equal or larger segment of the import sector being closed down if we are not to continue consuming the future , and incurring the inevitable debts.
We’re all in it together ; will urban consumers do their bit, and severely curb their appetite for imports?
    Highly unlikely , I suggest.

  • Hard News: The next four years, in reply to Russell Brown,

I wish he would stop saying “granted” , and “tolerably”.
But what do you think of his thesis ?

". . . . . the core concept of the identity politics currently central to the American left: the conviction that the only divisions in American society that matter are those that have some basis in biology.

Skin color, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability—these are the divisions that the American left likes to talk about these days, to the exclusion of all other social divisions, and especially to the exclusion of social class. Since the left has dominated public discourse in the United States for many decades now, those have become the divisions that the American right talks about, too."

“But when you hear people shrieking that Donald Trump is the illegitimate result of a one-night stand between Ming the Merciless and Cruella de Vil, that he cackles in Russian while barbecuing babies on a bonfire, that everyone who voted for him must be a card-carrying Nazi who hates the human race, or whatever other bit of over-the-top hate speech happens to be fashionable among the chattering classes at the moment—why, then, dear reader, you’re hearing a phenomenon as omnipresent and unmentionable in today’s America as sex was in Victorian England. You’re hearing the voice of class bigotry: the hate that dare not speak its name.”
