Sofie I'd argue that human rights are needs, not wants.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

...worth noting that both confer the same status/rights. I think of them as equivalent if not equal.

Paul, I take your point about defining inequalities. Sometimes conferring equivalent status isn't quite enough though. An example (and I realise it's not quite analogous) would be if, in the USA the 1950s, the law prohibiting black people from sitting at the front of the bus wasn't enforced. That would confer equivalent status but there would still not be equality. And it matters.

Christopher, just returning the favour really. You've done it for me often enough in the past :)

Giovanni, I quite agree. I do want to add though that the gains we haven't made are equally overdue. The names of things are important, they give power. In a good way.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Sofie there's legal equality, which we don't have, and there's social equality, which we also don't have. Some of the social inequality is reinforced by the legal inequality. The option to marry is a huge part of that. Adoption rights are another part.

Paul, CUs will be equal to marriage when we have the choice of them. While we're barred from marriage they remain unequal. I get your point about legal rights being conferred by either, but that's only part of the picture.

  • OnPoint: How it would work,

I believe it is possible to articulate a position on social justice from a right perspective - that's what we miss when the voices of old-style conservatives are drowned out by the brash neo-lib extreme.

Yes. It's unfortunate that Lord Denning fell off his perch before we could sort out the good cloning technology. He was far from perfect but his legal justice has had a positive and lasting influence on social justice.

  • Hard News: The Social Retail,

Hilary you must must must go to the Sunday market - either Waitangi or Victoria. Feijoas less than $3/kilo (I think actually less than $2 but can't be sure because that was, like, 4 days ago). Good quality too, not just the ones from the bottom of the box.

  • Up Front: Romeo Smells of Roses,

Words are surely an expression of the lovely minds though?

Not sure what ankles would be an expression of, but I see leg-warmers are in this year.

  • Hard News: Goodie Bag!,

A booty clap is when a lady wearing a g-string claps. With her bottom.

    Good god!

Also that thing with the girls in the vid... I'm all for girls being sexeh on my laptop screen but in this case the guys in the vid were just guys being ordinary people and the girls were being sexy. Too much contrast for it to look like anything other than objectification. Though that word looks more loaded than what I mean.
