  • Speaker: The Voyage: On Interpreting and…, in reply to Scott Chris,

Rather than enter into any multilateral trade agreements I’d rather see New Zealand do what the Swiss do, which is to negotiate a series of bilateral trade agreements tailored to suit the nature each unique relationship.

Some Swiss people that I know see this as enriching lawyers in Switzerland and Europe, while achieving the same results more slowly than the broader agreements.

It sure does seem that there is a lot of downside exposure in the "Free Trade" type agreements though. So somehow we need to be sure in whose interests the negotiators are negotiating.

  • Hard News: Criminalising Journalism,

3 Strikes laws, attempts to reduce our right to trial by jury, getting rid of the presumption of innocence, guilt by accusation (copyright laws, and suspending benefits for people with arrest warrants).(suspended on full pay anyone?)

When talking up what previous generations fought and died for, it was not the Flag, but this sort of stuff.

The National/Act parts of the govt have been very happily playing on that slippery slope.

Very much looking for convenient justice, reality TV justice.

    Principles.... Pah!

  • OnPoint: Other People's Wars, in reply to philipmatthews,

    Who’s selling the book?

Whitcoulls in St Lukes, in New Zealand books, not big promo.

And yes it is an interesting book given the lack of media inquiry about what goes on.

I think Mr Hager is right, East Timor, the Solomons and Bosnia were involvements where us NZ public had a feeling we were contributing to the greater good. Despite having great people on the ground, this does not seem to be the case in Afghanistan.

A bit of up front honesty from the pollies would be great.

One hopes that this/these particular NOT New Zealand Police Officers are no longer in New Zealand at the very least.

[DPF: The Police have obviously been reprimanded for their oversight. TV3 tonight showed another looter in court, and he looked like he had fallen down at least four sets of steps]

That is tabloid gossip, but it is interesting that the US embassy is collecting it. And reporting it back.

  • OnPoint: On Freedom of Speech,

The Dikshit thing and the Satyanand thing both actually seemed well summed up, by Phil Wallington I think, as the behavior of a bully.

He had a forum/platform that others did not, and did not use it wisely.

I myself was evidently one of the minority to communicate "Good riddance" to TVNZ about this.
