I repeat - what options were there? What would you have done?
If this initiative pressures the Nats into finally setting up a buyers' register - success. It doesn't matter what it reveals, just as long as we finally have hard data to base some effective policy on.

The reply to Nick Smith is "Prove it - start a foreign buyers' register."
Should he do so, and Chinese buyers prove dominant, who exactly is 'racist' then? Anyone?

..."It seems to me that it would be a far more clever (and modern) use of our time creating a narrative that can present people’s cultural outlook on foreign ownership as being shaped according to solidarity and unity of locals everywhere against the global elite – which these foreign “investors”, Chinese or otherwise, are undoubtably part of."
    Bears repeating.

You say Twyford "chose to make the headlines of this story about race", which implies you think he had several options to choose from. So - what were they? What choice would you have made?
I'm more perturbed by all those who choose to see this as a 'race' issue, when other more mature options are definitely available.

"...But when his headline is screaming “the Chinese are buying all our houses..."
On the contrary, what the headline is screaming to me is "Foreign non-resident buyers are a major cause of our housing issues, and both a foreign buyers register and legislation to address this is urgently needed."
People with half a brain can see that the Asian surname thing is simply a convenient way to make an important point, and it is unfortunate that some will leap at the 'race card' cliches instead of addressing it.

oooh, there's a few snobs 'ere, innit? Strongly recommend you go online (since you aint even got a telly, of course) and watch contestant Beau Monga on demand. I love the chaos of these stupid shows for the diamonds they sometimes unearth, and he's one, alright.

  • Up Front: The Song of Angry Women,

We keep tally of the number of car accidents, and report them regularly - as a warning to people to drive more safely. Why don't we do the same with domestic violence?
Another woman died the other day because neighbours concluded that the beating they witnessed was "only a domestic" - and while so few are reported people will continue to assume that the deaths and injuries they hear about are rare occurrences.
If we were ALL reminded of the statistics every time - that women died at the rate of ?one a week and were hospitalized in their hundreds every year (and the child death/injuries too) EVERY time there was a 'newsworthy' incident, the message might get through, and the country's culture change - just as it has with road accidents.
