One of the most hurtful things said to me by a dear friend, who even when I explained why it was hurtful still didn't get it, was "oh just imagine what you could be capable of if you weren't sick". I do. All the fucking time. And then try my best to appreciate all the things I can do and that I've shaped a meaningful life within those limits. And remind myself that everything and everyone in the universe has limits. I am also immensely grateful to two woman who value me for what I'm able to do and have allowed me to carve out a career that has kept me meaningfully employed through good times and bad. I do my best to pay that forward.

"Post-truth" for me too, though I must admit to enjoying using "bigly" on occasion

  • Speaker: What I learned in Class: Should…, in reply to Nick J,

I don't have the requisite Metallica qualification (came on board with the Black album), but can I cross credit my Iron Maiden, or is that too middle class?

I don't remember anyone using the term bogan back in Hawke's Bay in the early 80s, and the metal de jour was AC/DC and Iron Maiden, not Metallica.

The Bogan woman has already read what I’ve previously written and made a mental note to tell me to make proper reference to their gender next time.

Um Yes :-). And I do take some exception to the idea that bogans don't get doctorates - some of us grew up as bogans but still went to varsity (and still identified as bogans then, and even now). I'll never forget what Labour did as I was growing up working-class in the 80s and they'll never get my vote (likewise for National in the 70s).

However we might might feel about the fact that Slater and Williams make vile misogynist jokes in their private conversations, it's harder to argue that revealing those conversations meets a standard of public interest.

I disagree - there is a very real public interest here. Outing people who hold these vile opinions about half the human race may go some way to showing how unacceptable these opinions are, and perhaps provide a heads-up to the women who have to interact with them IRL. I read on twitter last night from a number of women who had had to interact with these low-lifes IRL. It also supports Hager's book where he revealed predatory behaviour on young Nat women. For many, rape culture is a bigger issue than political and business corruption.

There are zero votes to be won from that electorate and good media coverage to be won by getting thrown out for failing to observe an utterly pointless rule like not mentioning the PM's name.

    You mean John Voldemort Key?
