Hard News: How much speech does it take?, in reply to
I doubt it. Russell would have established a “nofollow” regime in the links coming from this site I presume?
No, I haven't. Most outbound links here tend to be to worthwhile sources. You wouldn't want to deprive them of the PA juice.

Hard News: Fixing Auckland, in reply to
Full disclosure: My partner works for Veolia so I might be slightly biased, but the general good-nature of folks waiting for the trains was appreciated. Some folks do have problems grasping that public transport is not run by magical
And as I said, things seemed to be going quite smoothly when we left. I suspect the people who had a longer wait were coming from the far side of the ground or stuck around for speeches.

Citation on the no-helmet rule, please? I’m going to print this out and keep a copy on me at all times.
Apparently it's in one of the council brochures, but I can't find the info on the Waterfront Auckland site. I may have been wrong ...

Field Theory: All Blacks v South Africa…, in reply to
Yup, but it was just a different game to watch in the second half. A much better performance by the Wallabies, many lessons for both teams there.
I'm with Gio. There were things to worry about, but mostly the All Blacks' intensity dropped because they had the game won.
It also seemed to us from the stands that Joubert made some astonishing decisions at the tackle. The turnover that led to the first Aussie trial -- surely the Wallaby player who claimed the ball was never onside?

For that reason I went over and thanked Shayne Carter afterwards. The room was a little large and chair cluttered for dancing…
Shayne joked to me at soundcheck: "So, when everyone starts going downstairs, that's when I start?"
And I was a bit worried at one point that that what was happening, but he made it work. By the end of the evening, I think some tables had declared turangawaewae status.

Hard News: Friday Fun with Brickface, in reply to
I’ll second that. His piece was very moving, and I at least got to contribute in a small way to his night’s enjoyment in return for the letters on my corny t-shirt.
He was stoked about that. We've agreed that there is yet more to be explored in the Brickface work.

Shout-out to the brewery whose name I forget
Hallertau. If the weather’s nice, their Riverhead base is worth a visit for a couple of afternoon beers in the sun.
I thought the pale ale in particular was great, and consequently drank quite a bit of it. They were really nice people to deal with too. If they're up for it, I'll cheerfully work with them again.

Russell, only you could possibly fail to score legal highs in Auckland. You’re not missing much, though.
Oh, I scored. I had to walk further down to Cosmic Corner. Bought 1.25 grams of Dream, after asking for something mellow. Interestingly, they had Kronic at half price and I got the impression people weren't buying it.
I quite liked it ($20), but it's very linear -- exact same high all the way through.
I was also a bit surprised at how expensive it was.

Setting the above aside, though, many thanks to all involved for a fantastic event. The presentations were all just great, and I had a lot of fun catching up with, and meeting, lots of fabulous people.
I thought we were going to have to turn the hoses on the last hundred stragglers, so deeply were they dug in.
Happily, we have a good quality audio recording from the desk and some basic video to go with it, so everyone will get a chance to experience David's awesome science.
I'll discuss with Blair what to do about getting his very moving work online too.
