Well that was lovely (yes, I left early). Emma did us all incredibly proud - well, I say we, I mean y'all because I sure as hell didn't contribute to the pastory. The story is captivating and funny, and I can't wait to hear what happened next. David was very funny - I had no idea how very predicative cranial diameter was. Blair Parkes' Chimney Book was affecting - very moving and beautifully done. And the Shockwaves work was very intense. Discomforting but mesmerising. Thanks so much, Russell, for organising it all. It was so lovely to see everyone, even if it was for such a brief time, and to meet George Darroch - a very engaging and interesting man he is, too.

I've discovered this wonderful thing called E-mail. It's just like posting on a forum/social network, but (in theory) the message only goes to the people you address it to. Just brilliant, really. Have they had this long?

Setting the above aside, though, many thanks to all involved for a fantastic event. The presentations were all just great, and I had a lot of fun catching up with, and meeting, lots of fabulous people.
(And thanks to Polly, for being well-behaved enough to allow me to enjoy it all. She saved all her screaming for the way home)

I thought we were going to have to turn the hoses on the last hundred stragglers, so deeply were they dug in.
Happily, we have a good quality audio recording from the desk and some basic video to go with it, so everyone will get a chance to experience David's awesome science.
I'll discuss with Blair what to do about getting his very moving work online too.

Back home and into teaching, after a restless sleep at the Jucy Hotel in Emily Place (must be those lime green walls). I enjoyed OGB last night but missed so much because of the interesting conversations I got engrossed in (thank you, Sasha).. But as I gently chided Emma, I must take issue with the very last line of her/collective story ie that is no reason to move to Hamilton

Sorry about that. How quickly I forget that other people have jobs.
Seeing the usual suspects was great, but I especially enjoyed seeing some new PAS people (to me). Bart, Recordari, Tony Siu, Sam F, and at the 11th hour, Rich Lock.
Rich, I'm embarrassed to say my Ki was not sufficient to detect the presence of a master Aikidoka not 2 meters away from us as we discussed martial philosophy, hiding inside a humble saxophonist.
Nice also to meet Jen Hay and Polly (what an angel!). David, you've mindfucked me - every time I see ministers of finance now, their heads look all out of proportion.
Emma, sorry about the dire nightlife of Thursday night Auckland. I don't know where the fantasy clubs are, and all the other ones won't accept Wolverine's older, less-hot brother.
Russell, only you could possibly fail to score legal highs in Auckland. You're not missing much, though.

Ha! I was the one going "I'm tired, I wanna go home...". But I did have a fabulous time, and it was lovely to meet new people. Even if I can't solemnly promise to remember all your names. I might now be sitting in a cafe in Vulcan Lane feeling a teeny bit seedy.

Pretty good, for a weeknight.
It was a pleasure to talk to real people; Scott, James, Rich, Simon and Jackie particularly. Craig delightfully told me "I thought you'd be taller! You sound taller online." I'd felt disconnected from New Zealand overseas; I'm now falling back into Aucklandness and New Zealandness, and though the discomfort hasn't disappated entirely, there's enough to ground me. So, thanks PA people, and Russel - so nice to actually meet you after using your site for five years! And of course, the sound installation was incredibly moving. I still struggle to understand what happened, but I think last night took me a little closer. I know that it took a number of people who experienced it back to the event, it was that powerful.
Other notes: the beer was excellent. Shout-out to the brewery whose name I forget, and thanks again to Orcon whose staff are lovely. Sorry Edge staff, but until all the lights are on and the sound is off, you wouldn't be rid of me.
