And it looks like (quite seriously) we're all too sick to have Christmas this year.
First it was "oh not enough of you bought our book so we had to eat gravel", now its "ohmigod we've got the plague".
I'm suspecting you just don't like Christmas.

Otters are my favourite animals in the world. If I could have a couple in my backyard, I'd die happy.
I say this simply to note I'll now be ignoring every comment by Russell Brown on this thread in order to keep my mind clean and happy. Santa has just added you to his 'naughty' list Brown.

So you're saying it's safe to ditch the "beta" from the masthead?
*cough*edit function*ahem*

Off topic, but Patel just got Gayle out for 197. Game on if they can get the last two wickets quicksmart.

It's a really nice speech with some dry humour and, at about the 12 min mark, a deeply welcome commitment to special education issues. I'm so glad to have someone like Grant in Parliament.
I remember that march where he was called NZ's #1 terrorist! Ironically, in the activist circles involved, he was about as 'moderate' as it got.
Grant will be a minister in the next government, and it should be something in Education. That will definitely be a good thing. After a few years he'll be pretty effective during debates in the house too, I can imagine a few members of the National Party taking body blows from him before this term is up. He's young and I hope we see him have a stranglehold over that seat, he will serve it well.

Another point is that they do actually kind of expect people to know what they are spending and take some responsibility for keeping track. No offense intended.
Actually, my bank has never stopped me taking out more than my overdraft. I previously never saw the point of the overdraft limit, as I could go over it, no penalties or anything, nothing said. For some reason in the past year or so, they've started to penalise, and I've been more careful.
But this penalty arose from an automatic payment timing changing, not through my doing. I was within my limit, and then the rates went out early for reasons that I don't understand, and I'm $20 dollars over, plus another $20 for the fine.

It's not much fun having people come in and yell at you because they've spent all the money in their cheque account and can't get any more out of the money machine. "But now I can't buy presents for my kids!! Why did the machine let me take out the last $50? Now you've ruined our Christmas!!"
Tangentially related, I have to ask why my bank lets money leave my account over my overdraft. From a money machine, or automated payment. I'd much rather the bank said 'no, that would take you over your overdraft, and we know you don't want that, so we will reject this withdrawl'.
Instead I suspect their actual response is "ooh yes, another chance to charge Kyle with an un-organised overdraft extension of $20 *cackles of glee*".

I can safely say it's morons like you who give Kiwi's a reputation here as a bunch of smug, self-satisfied whingers.
Wait, Kiwis in England are seen as whingers?
How ironic...

(I'll be excited when they make us.)
You mean more than Russell linking to them?

At a very basic level the research team created an "engine" that could determine the evenness of a sports competition. They then correlated those evenness scores with factors the various competitions had brought in to even them up. So in essence the team was able to determine how effective things like salary caps and inverse drafts are at in actual evening things up.
I couldn't get from "these are the least even competitions" to "these measures don't work in making competitions even". That's one possible solution, but there's others.
Super rugby, at least in New Zealand, for example, the primary factor of where players play is where their province lies in terms of franchises. Most players who get a super 14 contract, get it with the franchise that their province is part of. It's possible that one way to make the super 14 more even would be to break that relationship.
A salary cap relies on a free market where players can easily move around and change teams when the money becomes available. That happens a little, but only to a limited extent.
