  • Field Theory: It's a summer get-together,

A couple of notes of my own:

    - this summer I discovered I really like wheat beers, especially Three Boys

    - I will be in the Wellington area for the entire duration of the test. Attendance will be dependent on both weather and transport (ie the kindness of strange friends). If you want to arrange a meet-up, it might be best to email me and I'll give you my cellphone number.

    - remember the old days, when Hadyn didn't even like cricket?

Hey, did you see James May's Toy Stories last night?

Having acquired these from Friends In England, we were a bit puzzled as to why they were numbered as Lego House then Toy Trains, but clearly had been broadcast the other way around. Then I watched Trains and it made me cry. Lego House makes a much better ending.

Seems TVNZ's Breakfast show is an anomaly then..

Dude, you're not suggesting they don't know?

I thought a dick was someone who quotes Shakespeare sonnets at parties.

But... I've done that. I'm now starting to wonder if I've done that to you. Also, if done right, I find that quite appealing.

[At this point, I got halfway through typing a sentence before realising it contained a massive, and massively filthy, double entendre. As you were.]

  • Hard News: Still crazy after all these years,

Robbie never said ``i want to be out in the open'' did he?

What he said was, and I'll quote it again,

let's be right out in the open

Let's. Let us. You and I. Let you and I be right out in the open. You have a really strange definition of 'traduce'.

And I take it the answer to my direct question was "No I haven't, not ever", right?

I think that moving on is best

    The irony, it burns us...

The Hand Mirror has a policy where people are forbidden from discussing moderation policy in comments, to avoid discussions like this. I see why they have it, but I don't personally agree with it, for the same reason I wouldn't support banning linking pseudonyms. If the community, by and large, doesn't support it, it's not policeable. If the community does support it, it's not necessary.

In fact, the only rule that is necessary is the one Russell called 'the whole of the law': Don't Be a Dick. Now, you can say, oh but how do you define dickishness, but the PA community does it really well. How many people had worked out those pseudonyms and just kept quiet about it until the Dick Line was crossed? For any community, the "Dude, not cool" line is actually remarkably consistent.

  • Up Front: Your Whining Is Important to Us,

"In one way or another, we are all involved in sales or customer service."

But, but, sales is the opposite of customer service.

Which apparently isn't something they were getting from the others (or they wouldn't have made it to me).

Part of my job involves talking to customers that none of the other admins will deal with any more because they want to scream and punch things. There are two categories of these. The first are sweet and lovely people, but either completely technically inept, or unable to follow instructions. The ones who will swear they're hitting 'submit' when they're actually clicking 'delete'.

The second are arseholes. Or they wouldn't have made it to me. There aren't many of them, very few, but they take up... about half of our total one-on-one admin time. They lie, they're abusive, they hit on staff, they constantly complain.

I love my job when it goes well, and someone comes to me with a problem and I can fix it. Being able to make people happy is the up-side of the job. Also being the admin in charge of policy (it's like I'm the Caliph, but someone else gets paid for being the Caliph), I get to do things that (hopefully) make life easier for the other admins. That's pretty satisfying.

  • Hard News: Still crazy after all these years,

And Emma ``- don't say you want to be "out in the open"'' is not at all an adequate paraphrase of Robbie's words; it's really really shitty behaviour to make people say things they didn't say

Keir, it's a direct word for word quote. Given I quoted the whole comment just a little further up the page, I don't consider that to be 'out of context'.

Er Emma the other forum I comment on has fuck all moderation apart from the democratic opinion of the members. (OK, that forum is mainly dedicated to cock jokes but.) So you know, it isn't like one is approaching this from a completely virginal position.

So... you've never moderated, then? Just getting that quite clear.

However, I have never yet managed to lay false accusations of sock-puppetry and trollery, so I think that I may be doing a bit better than some.

Wow, Keir, neither have I, where would you like to put your moral superiority?

Also, and I note this from some experience across a number of forums, it's really easy to decide how things should be policed when you're not the one who actually has to do it.

However, perhaps a short guide for people who don't want their previous pseudonyms mentioned in public:

    - don't say you have previous pseudonyms apropos of nothing
    - don't specifiy how many there are
    - don't tell people what they can do to find that information out
    - don't say you want to be "out in the open"
    - don't behave like a tit.

Yes but. If Robbie doesn't want to admit to it, I think it's bad form to pin it on him.

Keir, if you go back to page 5 of this thread, I don't think that's a very accurate account of what actually happened. Robbie wasn't suddenly outed by Islander, out of the blue. He said:

if we're going to discuss stuff in the open, then let's be right out in the open. I'm about done hiding behind pseudonyms and giving a shit who i offend anymore, but dont quote me on that :)

Then Sofie asked who the previous pseuds were, Ben said he reckoned he could work it out, and Robbie said Ben was probably right, and that if anyone wanted to know they could ask Russell. Far from saying, "but I'd prefer it if no-one mentioned those names" he actually brought the subject up in the first place.

  • Up Front: Your Whining Is Important to Us,

Are you sure about that? I'm a pretty easy customer to please, I just expect "you" to provide the goods/services for which I am paying, as described by "you", in a timely fashion.

Yes, very. Very very. But I'd be interested to hear the opinions of other people who've worked in customer service. It may be that I've had a bad run of it and I've been spending too much time on this site lately. I did say most, and I did talk about having made two complaints myself. (Also, though I don't think it's relevant, none of our customers are Kiwis.)

I've also discovered that people are a de-stresser. Possibly on account of too much solo work

Y'know, Ben, that might be part of it. Through that period I was doing a content work contract, which is very much solo no-feedback work.

  • Hard News: Still crazy after all these years,

You used both of these handles on this forum, though, right? I'm not sure that making such connections is a breach of etiquette. Others may correct me on this.

Indeed, they've been used here, so they're relevant to here. End of story.

And I don't actually think that people working out that two pseuds are the same person, solely on similarity of comments, is "outing", because it doesn't involve the use of any outside knowledge. It's stating something which is at least in the process of becoming self-evident. How obvious does it have to get before anyone's allowed to mention it?
