  • Emma Hart,

However, I have never yet managed to lay false accusations of sock-puppetry and trollery, so I think that I may be doing a bit better than some.

Wow, Keir, neither have I, where would you like to put your moral superiority?

Also, and I note this from some experience across a number of forums, it's really easy to decide how things should be policed when you're not the one who actually has to do it.

However, perhaps a short guide for people who don't want their previous pseudonyms mentioned in public:

    - don't say you have previous pseudonyms apropos of nothing
    - don't specifiy how many there are
    - don't tell people what they can do to find that information out
    - don't say you want to be "out in the open"
    - don't behave like a tit.

  • Keir Leslie,

Yeah but Sacha has. I do not take well to people who have spectacularly fucked it up lecturing the rest of us on how to treat others.

Also, and I note this from some experience across a number of forums, it's really easy to decide how things should be policed when you're not the one who actually has to do it.

Er Emma the other forum I comment on has fuck all moderation apart from the democratic opinion of the members. (OK, that forum is mainly dedicated to cock jokes but.) So you know, it isn't like one is approaching this from a completely virginal position.

Mainly I am approaching this from the position that grudges are a bad idea and that getting moralistic about how people behave on the internet is so much of a lost cause it isn't funny. Most people are basically cunts and there is very little you can do about that that doesn't turn you into a cunt too.

(And Emma ``- don't say you want to be "out in the open"'' is not at all an adequate paraphrase of Robbie's words; it's really really shitty behaviour to make people say things they didn't say, especially stripped of context.)

  • Islander,

Well, she drawled, since the majority of the human species* are female, I'd agree with "most people are cunts" -or, at least have 'em.
Other than that, Keir Leslie, you come across as a judgmental toad.

*Yep, species. It seems the slight sexual imbalance in favour of females was probably consistent across known hominim species.

Keir, it's a direct word for word quote. Given I quoted the whole comment just a little further up the page, I don't consider that to be 'out of context'.

So... you've never moderated, then? Just getting that quite clear.

I really do. I think that you traduced Robbie's meaning there. I do not think that Robbie wanted to be out in the open in the sense you mean. Of course, he may disagree and I shan't say nought. (And it isn't a word for word quote; Robbie never said ``i want to be out in the open'' did he?)

Dunno; I quite agree I am being judgemental. That is rather the point. Again, you are quite free to ignore me.

(Sacha, I can't be arsed trawling through the archives at the moment, so of course you may assume I am wrong. But I do remember you accusing someone of sock puppetry who was merely unfortunate enough to start posting at the wrong time.)

  • Sacha,

I do remember you accusing someone of sock puppetry

I am happy to own up to anything I've done, but I'll need more than a vague recollection before "spectacularly fucked it up" seems justified. Maybe we can compromise on "stuffed up", as I'm sure I've done that before.

Thank you all for reminding me when I fail to have enough humility and compassion. Seriously.

  • Islander,

Keir Leslie - at one stage I mistakenly thought pollywog was a lil p sockpuppet: I was only right in that it was a reincarnation of dubmugga...I cant recall Sacha making that kind of error.

I think lil p is still among us as a witty & couth wordplayer, Which is good. And if the latest version of dubmugga is so wonderfully productive - that's good too.

I think I can, but like I say, I am not going to riffle through the archives. I am totes willing to take you all on faith here.

I just don't like the dog-piling thing, where we all leap on one person we disagree with.

But honestly, I don't think anyone behaved awfully here. I don't think picking at old scabs ever helps. I think that moving on is best, and I base that, Emma, on observation of Making Light going horribly wrong in the was boing boing went wrong and other places.

  • Emma Hart,

Robbie never said ``i want to be out in the open'' did he?

What he said was, and I'll quote it again,

let's be right out in the open

Let's. Let us. You and I. Let you and I be right out in the open. You have a really strange definition of 'traduce'.

And I take it the answer to my direct question was "No I haven't, not ever", right?

I think that moving on is best

    The irony, it burns us...

The Hand Mirror has a policy where people are forbidden from discussing moderation policy in comments, to avoid discussions like this. I see why they have it, but I don't personally agree with it, for the same reason I wouldn't support banning linking pseudonyms. If the community, by and large, doesn't support it, it's not policeable. If the community does support it, it's not necessary.

In fact, the only rule that is necessary is the one Russell called 'the whole of the law': Don't Be a Dick. Now, you can say, oh but how do you define dickishness, but the PA community does it really well. How many people had worked out those pseudonyms and just kept quiet about it until the Dick Line was crossed? For any community, the "Dude, not cool" line is actually remarkably consistent.

  • recordari,

I thought a dick was someone who quotes Shakespeare sonnets at parties. I'm gonna have to rewire my dickometer.

    Sorry, I'm not helping...

Seems TVNZ's Breakfast show is an anomaly then..

Totally. I change my mind on the subject quite a lot, even. You don't really have the luxury.

  • Islander,

As long as the quoters are accurate, (and dont just do "Shall I compare thee'"etc.) I'll enjoy their rendition & shout them a drink.
Erm, this happens at Big O parties. Because we Are An Elite* doncha know? And, actually, because we can get really drunk, and really love to sing & quote poetry amidst the cheeses and wine at any time....

    *joke

  • Isabel Hitchings,

On the boards I frequent I find there are two main groups of people who come back under new usernames.

The first group are people are generally decent types who made one or two mistakes that got them banned (usually posting angry after someone hits a nerve). They usually announce themselves as "the poster formerly known as X" and get on with being decent (if feisty) board members.

The others are the serial nuisances who come and stir up trouble until they get booted off then come back with a whole new identity but the same writing style over and over again. This is so common that I tend to look at all new posters sideways for a while.
