  • Don Christie,

I do like elections. In VA there is a 5000 margin with (I think) about 100,000 votes to count.

    Amazing stuff, whoever you support.

Alistair, those exit polls are pretty suspect given all the early voting that took place, even if they do try and account for that.

  • Paul Rowe,

And Maryland seems to have swung back to the Dems with 55% counted. VA will be real close (I have to wonder about the 7% of registered Dems who, according to exit polls, voted for the other guy!)

  • Alastair Thompson,

Maryland seems to be back in play. Washpost have withdrawn their call on the race.... and republican is ahead in the count at present (Maryland is Diebold DRE dominated... so if this happens it will be new ground zero for election fraud.)

With 98% counted Virginia only has 7000 vote margin now.. less than 1% margin gives - according to CC - Jim Webb the automatic right to demand a recount against George Allen (who doesn't like black people).

Tennessee is recording 40,000 votes in favour of republican Bob Corker - of race slur advert fame.

Missouri 50% reporting shows a republican lead of 6%.
Montana still showing a dem lead of 6% with 6% reporting (effectively meaningless according to CNN pundits.)

  • Alastair Thompson,

    Don,

The early votes - absentees - are not yet counted in many cases.... early electronic are probably counted... dunno.

I expect the exit pollsters probably try to take account - though it may not be possible. In one of these races both gubernatorial candidates reccommended the use of absentees I seem to recall.

Maryland is a special case. Its ground zero for scraps over voting machines. The exit poll showed it +7 to dems. Why the networks called it so early is a bit of a mystery... I was expecting it to be close on the basis of pre-election polling.

  • Don Christie,

Alastair - control yourself. Not every sudden swing is the result of corruption! If a precinct heavily in favour of one candidate comes in then there will be a big shift.

Looks like the Maryland result is not going to increase your readership, it's going back to the dems :-)

  • Paul Rowe,

CNN is more utd than NYT, showing a small lead to the Dem (from memory the Rep guy is a former Lieutenant Gov so that may be to his advantage). CNN is showing 58% of precincts counted and NYT 48%, which seems to be well over 100,000 votes.

God knows how corrupt the US election system is.... but this is the first time that millions of people have been watching a US election for fraud.

And if you could see Scoop's ratings you would see that its already helping our readership comprehensively. Mainly seems to be people linking to old stories from 2004 at moment mind.

Very early in MT but looks like Mr Burns is catching up.

MO is going to the wire, McCaskill seems to be catching slowly.

If you look at the Missouri house districts with significant amounts of votes still left to count they are heavily democratic. The ones mostly already counted are republican districts. There's hope yet!

  • Alastair Thompson,

Lets assume Dems keep VA and MO.... the margin in MO is opening up....

If this happens the Senate is a tie.... Cheney has a casting vote. And Leiberman is a snake in the grass so that means GOP victory really... by a small nose

    __

    What is left.

The Dems need TN or MI to win.... at present both show a 60,000 vote lead to the republicans.

Missouri seems to be the best chance...... thats what CNN's Jeff Greenfield says and it is also what the exit poll indicated.

TN is highly likely to have been the subject of major dirty tricks (as is VA but if the dems win it becomes a bit academic there.)

  • Danyl Mclauchlan,

Nancy Pelosi is speaker of the House! What if she forces normal god-fearing Americans to marry gays? What if she starts handing out condoms, ball gags and capsules of amyl nitrate in public schools? What if she gets menstrual blood all over some crucial piece of legislation? What if she disbands the CIA and turns all their secret files over to Michael Moore? What if she dissolves the US government and declares Kim Jong Il dictator for life?

Dark days ahead for America . . .

So on paper the Democrats now have both houses.

VA has a paperless election so will be funny watching George Allen asking for a recount.

Haven't been able to tear myself away from CNN all afternoon. Best quote: Begala reporting an APB for lawyers already emanating from Virginia.

Should I really be finding LGF'scomments on the results so very funny?

This is a disgusting display of American voter ignorance.

I quite. I not going to vote again. It's time I gave up on this political bullshiat. I just hope the nuke attack comes soon. Let it be on the East Coast where it belongs.

I think this demostrates pretty clearly that voting should be a privilege, NOT a right.

    I know, I know, I shouldn't laugh, but...

  • Danyl Mclauchlan,

    Wow. More LGF comments:

    expect the next attack

this will be a big one with many casualties

which is why I moved the family away from the city
I am retiring and never setting foot in DC again

    too damn dangerous now

only good news from it is President Pelosi will have to deal with a whole order of magnitude more casualties than Katrina

    and

there's going to be American blood on the asphalt soon because of tonight

Well, America will get what it has coming - more terrorist attacks

I only hope I wake up to Washington a glowing hole in the morning.

We just need to weather the nuclear attack when it happens and we will be okay. Let the military take over. I advocate a military coup.

his has been one of the worst nights in this countries history. I am watching the death of America.

I'm sorry everyone. Tonight may be one of the worst nights of my life. I can't believe how depressed I am. I know that by writing this you can't see how I am here. I'm sobbing in pain and anger and frustration. I don't know what to do. This is one night when I wish I wasn't here alone in my apartment. This is one night I wish I had a friend who's shoulder I can cry on. I am so mad. I hate this world. I hate myself because I got so invested in a bunch of losers. I thought it meant something. I'm so sorry. You are all really smart, good people. Take care. I need to go to bed.

That last one really puts a smile on my face.
