  • WH,

I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes
    I saw the sign
No ones gonna drag you up
To get into the light where you belong
    But where do you belong?

Next week: I deconstruct the arbitrary nature of the sign.

just a little double entendre/philosophy humour there. ho ho.

  • Rich of Observationz,

I never had a problem with the new AB haka doing the simulated throat cutting. I'll have to tie down why the two are so different for me.

    It's called context.

If it's in the context of the officially sanctioned controlled violence that we call sport then that's fine - it's just helping the proletariat let off steam and concentrate their resentment on biased foreign referees and the like.

If it's in the context of unsanctioned protest against established authority then that's bad and needs to be suppressed.

  • Kyle Matthews,

    It's called context.

No that's not it. At least not wholly it. I suspect the big knife had something to do with it.

I don't imagine that the person would have any intention of using it at all. Seeing people draw a knife across their own throat however...

I'm just not really the weapons type. I've been on... well over a hundred protests. I can't think of one where I wouldn't have just walked away if people had been carrying weapons.

  • WH,

Yeah. My old flatmate's exgirlfriend taught me about the pros and cons of "negative attention". Acting out doesn't really help you get what you want, unless all you really want is negative attention, which is kinda a cry for help IMO.

  • Sara Noble,

Had a chat with my Tuhoe mate today. He says that the other, possibly most important thing, about Hikoi is that it is a healing process. You symbolically take the shit back to where it came from and leave it there. No damage done and everyone goes home to live another day.

Also Peter Williams' report was delivered to Tuhoe today. It should be up on one of their websites by tomorrow.

  • Russell Brown,

    Surely that's an ambitious rationalisation?
    :-)

Possibly. But I've been so sensible so far I think I'm allowed on one Friday.

    Plus, it's not that far-fetched.

I love Bob the Builder but his recent competition Handy Manny, voiced by Fez of That 70's Show, more recently of "Yo Mama" fame, is even better. Such a simple life (and the white guy with the comb-over, from the next-door shop, is SUCH a bozo)!

  • Sara Noble,

Going backwards again... I did the vote Green thing and ended up feeling too much of a collaborator. I think I'll vote Maori again this time in the hope that Labour will have to do a real deal with them. But OMG, how can I risk the possibility of a govt with ol' Winnie white teeth in it? What was his slogan for the paddling-without-getting-his-shiney-shoes- wet poster? what this country needs is a new man - or something?

    and if

I think this really all ultimately boils down to a conflict between the core structural concepts of object oriented and aspect oriented thinking patterns. Possibly a functional approach to considering the problem could contribute some real positive results also, but I think in terms of communicating effectively with urban Maori one really needs to keep object encapsulation carefully in mind and ensure proper separation of the model, view and controller. And while object-relational mapping may be the Vietnam of our time, at least by trying to resolve these issues we're stopping it becoming the Guantanamo Bay-meets Dresden of our time!

actually means something, could somebody translate for me?

  • blindjackdog,

blindjackdog begs leave to suggest that if the Maori Party are looking to win twice as many electoral seats as they'd get through their party vote, casting one of the latter in their direction is essentially "wasting" your vote.

Yet the dog also acknowledges that in an environment where we hate ourselves for dignifying the process by even taking part, a symbolic vote is not, perhaps, such a bad thing.

  • commie mutant traitor,

I think I'll vote Maori again this time

That's just throwing away your vote. They'll get more electorate seats than the party vote entitles them to anyway, so voting for them isn't much better than voting for National. They're not especially reliable on policy, either.

    the paddling-without-getting-his-shiney-shoes- wet poster

Ah yes, the "oops, what did I just tread in?" billboards... they were amusing.

  • linger,

Sara -- since the Maori Party did rather better by winning electorates last time than they could have done on party votes, the best use of your vote (if you're on the Maori roll) has to be: Maori for electorate + some other party of your choice for party. (Essentially: what BJD said; but why settle for making the party vote merely symbolic?)

I'm not sure why voting Green should make anyone feel like a collaborator. They're not actually in the governing coalition. At present, they're the party most consistently able to offer criticism of government policy on the basis of rational assessment of issues without descending into partisan hooting or getting sidetracked by personality conflicts. I have to hope that that works in their favour next election.

  • Sara Noble,

Okay, I'll start being (somewhat) serious again - orange juice tonight folks. Yep its green for me again, they're just so dour, so not not not sexy or fun. How can you be sooooo serious and yet still come across as flakey so much of the time. Okay even that isn't quite true.

Things I like about the Greens:
They're just about my shade of green.
They don't do coalition - rather take it issue by issue - IMO that's how MMP is supposed to work.
    The "anti-smacking bill"
Other progressive social policy they've helped through.

Things I don't like about the greens:
They might support the campaign finance bill - it was a no, then it was a yes, now its a maybe, right?
They're a bit too pink - I find the buy NZ made thing a bit backward. Though of course there are lots of good reasons for it (Enviro cost of shipping, chinese sweatshops etc), it just smells too much like Luddite parochialism to me.
They say really dumb things like, we should have a mechanism for people who drive under the influence of drugs as well as alcohol but the evidence shouldn't be used for bringing drugs charges. Sounds like they will let P users off to protect cannabis users from prosecution - and that is underhanded in the sense that, even if they (and I) think cannabis should be decriminalised, while there is still a law against it, and you get caught driving at 15k down the centre line, then tough luck. Of course thats not a 10th as dumb as JK saying the cops should be able to take DNA samples with every arrest on the basis that they would destroy it on aquital. Yeah right.
That "gotta have a female and male co-leader" thing. Why not a Maori (and a left hander) etc. (Remember "Land Rights For Gay Whales")
They ALL have bad hair (well, the first four that come to mind).
They're probably all structuralists, even if they don't know it.

I did seriously think about voting Maori last time (the symbolic, useless thing like bjd said, but then they Pita Sharples and co appeared to abduct that kid for tampering with their posters etc and I couldn't.

I think we should form the PASHNCaSagfMGOYFHH Party. That'll do the trick.

Or the MADMUPs (Middle aged downwardly mobile urban professionals) - my dad's party (after McGillicutty Serious died). Or the Raliens - the Raliens are really funny... Promising everyone spaceships and eternal life. Jeez they'd probably win.
