A friend of mine
He's the guy who did the animation for the Wreck of the Diddlley? That would be Joseph's favourite video. Serendipitious awesomeness of the Web strikes again.

3410,
Bloody true. I've never had - and still don't - a cell phone. Went looking for a pay phone recently, and there weren't any.

Oh, lor--there are now two of us. My old mum used to tell me that if you encountered someone walking down the street, talking loudly to no one in particular, they were probably mad. I see such behaviour all over the place these days.

There's a lone payphone down on Don Croot Street in Kingsland, down near the various flats. Stands out in my mind because it's extremely brightly lit on a very poorly lit street. Presume it must still get some use from time to time...

The really annoying thing is that you now have to look up the address of unfamiliar shops before you leave the house.
-
Still have a pay-phone in Big O - that's because there is no general cellphone coverage here...
The good things about The Net: contact & information, as several other posters have noted.
If I hadnt checked on an internet site back in 2004, I would never have learned that I wasnt a lonely solus mutation - there were millions of us out there, human animals included! I lurked, then posted, on that site for several years. It was a good on-line community but then I outgrew it...
Information is as close as Wikipedia or Google (and you can check out whatever on more specialist sites if need be. Or go to real-book libraries-)
There are not a lot of sites I regularly read or post on: marvellous PAS is one of them (Maps' and Giovanni and the lit. sites (Beattie's & Bookiemonster's) others-
So? The web is the winner?
Or every aforementioned person/place?And isnt it truly life-enhancing that humans have invented and maintained and protected this latest almost-universal tool?

*cough* Really?
Oh, lor--there are now two of us.
*gulp* You're both officially my heroes. Or anti-heroes. Or something.
Well done, I guess. Is it the internet that has enabled you not to have cell phones, but still be in touch with people constantly?
Do you Skype? Just as a matter of interest.

I don't want to "be in touch with people constantly". That's the whole point. :)
-
Are you not on Twitter then? Because Twitter has this optional feature that helpfully sends you a text if you haven't tweeted anything for more than 24 hours. You'd love that!
Whilst on that subject, I'll confess to objectively getting a whole lot out of the much vituperated Facebook.

Umm, isn't that kind what PAS is all about too?
You'd love that!
I tweetered out. Something didn't gel. Even after a few attempts. My need to share my daily missives in 140 characters was surpassed by my overwhelming irrelevance, and predisposition for nihilism.
Facebook has enabled some old friendships to maintain regular contact, which is good, and I am pleased they sorted out their privacy stuff, which popped up today.
-
Well, I might as well expound my theory about modern communications ie
Texting= very small talk
Twitter=small talk
Facebook=medium-sized talk
Blogging (PAS in particular)=big talk
I use (and value) the last two but FB does have its drawbacks eg students who want to be my 'friend'
Have a great weekend. I am in Auckland tomorrow and might stumble over one or two people--I will be the one walking down the street not texting.

As a total text-twitter-facebook-free zone, may I say I recognise the virtues of all the social networking tools? It's just -I dont want to be in that much social contact because I just dont have that time?
I carry a primitive* cellphone in the van: it is never on until I want to ring out: that's what it's there for - for me to contact someone/entity *if I need to*-
and of course, if there was some kind of on-going family/friend emergency, I'd leave it On-
*primitive: it's an early Nokia: the charge lasts for months, and it is ultra-reliable. -

Okay, I really mean I don't want people to be constantly in touch with me! :)

Another thing we (I) take for granted - that we can watch amazing short films like this one with little effort.

I believe it's presented misleadingly - it's who and what you are paying attention to, not "what you're doing".
Twitter can easily be about listening more than talking, and forwarding whatever most grabs your attention. You could look at it as a smart human search system to filter out the best stuff, kind of like PAS.
-
Except, Sacha, going by one of my high profile family member's experience, there is an awful lot of ephemeral crap around: in PAS, you simply skip areas you're not interested in (sorry Hayden!)
And, who wants to deal with the crap? -
It's quite easy to avoid crap on Twitter - just don't follow people who produce it. One click of a button, and none of the palaver of trying to disengage from Facebook by all accounts.
-
The best thing about the Net for me - the amazing amount of people that are suddenly a part of my world. The world has become huge and it still amazes me that I get to experience interaction with all these people.
It also still amazes me that I get to put my own writing out there and create on my own terms! And people read it and enjoy it (thanks Islander :D)
And perhaps this is too personal a reason but the net introduced me to my now-husband. I didn't know there was someone out there who I would so instantly connect with. I still remember the moment we did instantly connect and, yes, it happened on the net. I just think that is unbelievably cool.

Oh and I love Twitter. :)
Facebook is crap, but Twitter is fantastic. -
I'm in my dream job working for a couple I met through nzmusic.com. Still can't quite work out how they could hire me based entirely on the vast swathes of non-work-related debate I contributed, primarily during work hours no less, but everything's coming up milhouse for all of us.
Actually, 80% of my friends can be traced back to that site. I'm friends with people I wouldn't have given a second look if my first impression hadn't been based on their superb musical tastes and erudite reviews.
Public address is the new nzmusic.com, 10% and climbing.

3410,
Another cool thing about the internet: I'll think to myself, I think I'll play myself a Fred Wesley record, and bang, it's on. I consider that a tangible improvement in my standard of living.
