Just looking over the 1982 All Whites in those Panini stickers (what is Panini anyway?). Is it just me or does Frank van Hattum look a wee bit like Richie McCaw?
-
3410,
what is Panini anyway?
It's... well, I'll leave it to Giovanni.
-
I discovered most people I know who have been excited about the world cup are not planning to actually watch any games, due to the times they are played.
New Zealand interest in soccer - novelty value or enduring love affair? -

I'd say more media novelty value, but there has always been a hard core set of appreciation of the finest ball game that ever existed . Hello! this is FOOTBALL with a ball that is the right shape. I'll tell you that for nuthin'
To not watch is lazy. We have a thing called a recording device so I am glad we wont talk scores here. I'm off to watch England- USA as soon as he wakes up. The panini is...breakfast. Where's my coffee? -

Just a surname. Franco Panini - an arts publisher - is the chap who started it all. The first sticker albums, in the Sixties, were about the Italian domestic football league, but by the time I was a kid there were albums for tournaments such as the world cup or the most popular cartoon series, nowadays everything under the sun has its own album. Back in the day, the equivalent of 10-20 cents would buy you a packet of five stickers and then you'd trade your doubles, which was all the fun. You could actually send out for the missing stickers you needed to complete an album, but only sad arses did that.
Name-wise, the Panini family must have been bakers at some stage.
As I'm sure I mentioned before, the 1982 panini sticker album is where I discovered that New Zealand existed.

Thanks for that very comprehensive post there by "Speaker" (Dan?). But be careful - you don't want to peak too early. You may have used up the full squad of links there. Don't want to start with a hiss and a roar, and then have nothing left in the tank by the semi-finals.
Speaking of which, well done to England for not emulating the All Blacks and romping through the opening group game. Canny, very canny.
Generally a pretty modest start, no great dramas in the games so far. What this tournament needs now is a goal-fest. A good old-fashioned thumping.
I can see one candidate coming up, but ... no, I've said enough. And Slovakia aren't that good.
-
Er... what happened to not talking scores there simon?
-
Oh, is that the rule? I didn't know, sorry.
That's going to make this a pretty dead blog, though. What's the statute of limitations?
-
Actually, I don't know, I was just going by what Sofie said :-)
I assumed we'd be discussing the games discussed in each blog, which makes sense. -
(Bear in mind I'm still not allowed to tell Kyle who won the Stanley Cup in 2009).
-
So is it too soon to tell you that Italy lose to Paraguay?
-
Heh...!
-
(Bear in mind I'm still not allowed to tell Kyle who won the Stanley Cup in 2009).
Always the funny with you!
Since I discovered iraqgoals.net, I actually saw the winning game live.
-
I've seen it now, and ouch!Trouble with being half yank, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I always want England to win.
Nice, my strategy worked though :) -
2002, it strikes me, was unmemorable (Turkey made the semi-finals unless Wikipedia is having a laugh)
I kind of waited to see if this was going to be commented on, but... oi! Turkey had a very good team and was deserved semifinalist. What are you trying to say here?

I was at 4 of the games in that tournament so I remember it pretty well, specially Korea dunting out the Italians and the Spanish muhahahaha.
-

Yeah, don't bring them up. The game against Italy was bad enough, but the one against Spain was scandalous. I still can't believe they got away with that.

Realising this is my first World Cup with MySky. Storage issues aside (the Criterium Dauphine is playing havoc), this is going to be invaluable in coming weeks as we cope with one of the most diabolical time differences going.
Everyone's been pretty cagey so far, hey? England v USA has been the most entertaining so far, with South Africa v Mexico not far behind. I didn't watch Korea v Greece in fairness.
If anyone is looking for a football related DVD to take a break from watching football, I can thoroughly recommend Ken Loach's Looking For Eric - we watched it last night, it is very funny, with bonus breathtaking Cantona footage. He's not a bad actor either.
*BTW Dan, Battiston v Shumacher's elbow was 1982, not 1986 #helpful #annoying

I figure Sophie must've seen the game by now. But if not SPOILER:
The Americans had been threatening with some rather good crosses and close calls, and I tweeted:
Kinda get the feeling that a #USA goal isn't too far away
I hit enter, looked up and they scored off a horrible goalie misfortune. And so I had to write:
How the fuck did I do that?
-
England should put all it's faith in West Ham players alright

Well Sofie with an f has. Mentioned at 12ish that, as I was so appreciative of the consideration from you guys.I felt like Green needed a big hug poor bugger. I do think the new ball has surprised the boys. I thought it definitely bounces quite high and a few goals went way over the top of the goal. Also it curves but without player control. Well it looked like that anyway.

nah it was a beat up by bitter fans.
Korea should have had a penalty awarded to them in the Greece game last night but were still good enough to win.
Italy and Spain weren't.
-
Seriously, let's not go there. It was embarrassing stuff, the Koreans themselves ought to have been ashamed of it.
-
Don't worry, I've seen the games dozens of times and know the talking points.
Had nothing to do with the Koreans. Refs made the calls, Spain and Italy had chances to win the game as did the Koreans on several occasions but blew it.
Unfortunately it's football. There will be plenty of dodgy calls made at this WC that may cost teams games but as long as it's not those cheating Asians benefiting...
-
'You can see the ball never went out on TV,' complained Carles Puyol afterwards. 'I don't want to think that the referee went out to rob either team but the pictures speak for themselves. It's clear the referee was not in our favour.'
Hiddink's riposte was bullish. For a start he noted that his team had stopped defending from the moment they saw a raised flag - indeed the keeper made no attempt to save Morientes's header. 'The losing team must look in the mirror,' he said. 'If an experienced team doesn't take advantage of the mis takes we made they should not look at external circumstances.'
He's exactly right but it was totally overlooked by many who should have known better.
If France go far in this tournament I wonder if it will get the same reaction. From irish fans maybe :)
