  • giovanni tiso,

My mum will be dead proud. :)

She should be. And, for what it's worth, I'm also in favour of the rofflenui spelling.

  • giovanni tiso,

    Et tu, Brute?

Well, that was my original vote. It's not as if I pretended to switch factions while secretly plotting to restore the republic.

  • Sacha,

And thanks to my lack of classical education, I didn't even get the reference. You guys need to suggest some other words before the voting..

  • Jolisa,

I'm coming around on the spelling... roflnui might be more linguistically pure, but rofflenui is very onomatopoeic. It tells you how to say it, in a user-friendly way. Hmm.

Is it a noun ("we had a right old rofflenui at that one") or a verb? If so,does it inflect for tense? ("I rofflenuid my &*%^ off").

Still holding out for Jen's expertise, but also deferring to Islander, who will be responsible for getting this word into the OED ere long!

  • Sacha,

As roflnui it's a bridge between net and maori cultures. As rofflenui it also bridges into pre-net english. I guess we'll have to see how it gets used to figure out what seems right, but I suspect as a modern word there won't be any hard and fast rules - or even one spelling.
    Now, about those other words...

  • Trevor Nicholls,

It may not deserve to be Word of the Year, but rofflenui is clearly streets ahead in the Word of the Word of the Year competition.

And in what year would "word" have been the word of the year?

  • giovanni tiso,

And in what year would "word" have been the word of the year?

I shall refer you to Genesis 1:1. (Still during the Peter Gabriel years, then.)

I've noticed the term "daddy state" gaining currency in the last few weeks. It's not a new term, but it seems only to have landed here very recently.

I was just thinking the same thing a couple of nights ago. 'Urgency' surely should be in there somewhere. I'd plump for 'volatility' as well.
