  • 81stcolumn,

C4 has just sent through these programme amendments:

I guess this explains how dead artists manage to shift sh*tloads of music when they die.

BBC now reporting he’s come back to life.

Quite a day for resurrections really.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I remember as a 5-year-old in 1980, watching some cool stand 4 kids dancing to "Don't stop till you get enough" at lunchtime.

And I kind of like Michael Jackson's songs. "Billie Jean" was dope, as was that "Say Say Say" duet with McCartney.

But then "Beat It" was released and he just seemed really angry and aggressive and I was 8 and I wasn't into that. Michael Jackson became music that other people listened to.

And then there were all the quite nuttery people who are the serious Michael Jackson fans. The kinds who right now will no double be wailing with grief, lighting candles, wondering how they'll survive. I can't relate to that.

Irish comedian Ed Byrne made the point that "Thriller" is incorrectly titled. The song is about horror movies - monster, zombies, vampires - not thriller movies - femme fatales, shadowy figures, conspiracies.

Today, at home, in bed, sick with a mancold, I felt more upset at the fake news that Jeff Goldblum was dead than at Michael Jackson's death.

Poor old Farrah's down the chart.

Yeah, her and Ed McMahon got a raw deal out of the timing.

Wow, that's unfunny on soooo many levels! Is Ed Byrne trying to make a career out of pointing out the inconsistencies in song title, after his Morissette bit? Gotta quit when you're ahead, man.

And then there's the 3-D fraggle-icious fromagerie that was Captain Eo.

I'm thinking about his kids. Helluva young age to lose your only parent, no matter how weird they are.

Ah, how could I forget the seriously twisted piece of high camp that is The Wiz!

You got to, ease on down, ease on down the roooad Love that film.

I also got very snippy at the MJ jokes that sprung up on twitter. It seemed a lot like "I've got to get in before someone else takes my zombie joke or my one about how he was really white", and none so far have even been remotely funny.

Oh, Swells, Steven Wells, that's so sad. His final bit of writing is
here. A few NME pals of his have left messages in the comments. They link to his longer pieces about the cancer.

Such a lively, warm and humorous use of swear-words. No one like him since. God he made me laugh, and so principled too.

  • Russell Brown,

Oh, wow. How spooky is the last line Swells ever wrote?

Me? I blame it on sunshine. I blame it on the moonlight. I blame it on the boogie.

Lucky they've got a warm, stable, normal, extended family to assist in their upbringing.

    Oh wait...

I believe Francis Ford Coppola quietly leaves that off his CV -- though I wouldn't be quite so proud given some of the craptastic hack work he's done.

Martin Scorsese did the video for 'Bad' -- which deserves a prize for truth in advertising, because Marty should trying to butch up MJ was an epic fail waiting to happen. And he didn't even have cocaine psychosis to blame any more...

Ooof. Bad was really where the rot set in. Still, I've recently come to an appreciation for 'Smooth Criminal'...

I reckon the turning point was when his hair caught on fire in the Pepsi ad.

If it’d had caught on fire properly he’d have gone down as even bigger than James Dean, Munroe and even Elvis.

    Not now though.

Let me guess: Its all Obama's fault that Michael Jackson is a terrorist-cuddling Muslim lesbian liberal. Or something.

Just be aware that you're not dissing Ed Byrne's joke, but actually my retelling of his joke. And I have a terrible memory and an almost complete inability to retell other people's jokes with any of the original humour.

    I'll ter-ror-ize your neigh-bor-hood if you don't watch out.

    More MJ.

Fox News features interview with the Rev. Al Sharpton without depicting him as a terrorist.

Truly, we are all one family today.

  • Peter Darlington,

    Swells on Wayne Rooney:

"Look at his eyes! Have you ever seen deader eyes? Even on a dead person? Even on, like, a dead person with no eyes? They say that the eyes are the windows of the soul - but looking into Wayne Rooney's reptilian pits is like staring into Nietzsche's abyss. There is no humanity there, or compassion. There's only the message, beamed loud and clear: "I outlived the dinosaurs and I will outlive your kind too, human. And my offspring will lay their eggs in your children's flesh-stripped bones. Now come a bit nearer the water's edge so I can bite yer frickin' legs off."

    Sheer class

Messers Beck, O'Reilly and Hannity, however, I would not bet my life on them exhibiting human decency for any length of time. I predict one of them is going to engage in some sly fag-baiting, because we all know they interfere with children...

Aye. I don't find the news of his death as big as the media outlets and making it, and most of the jokes... meh.

There must be some C grade porn or religious programming that they can use that frequency for and still get better informed viewers. "Here's some people [in a city that Michael Jackson wasn't really connected with] that want to be on national TV, I'm going to ask them how they feel about Michael Jackson dying..."

My favourite MJ anecdote is the apocryphal one that surfaced in popbitch a few years ago, about Quincy Jones' freakout during the recording of Billie Jean.

Bad was my first album, I feel awful that I prefer the Alien Ant Farm cover of 'Smooth Criminal' more than the original.

Just cruising through my iTunes MJ's later (and worse) stuff was really preachy

It struck me a bit that judging from his recent tour poster's he was playing the same character with the same singlet and the same beer and the same hat as ten plus years ago. Who does he think he is, Groucho Marx? Dude, you're not that iconic.

But if you tell me the show was funny I shall believe you because you're good people.
