  • andrew llewellyn,

"Inappropriate behavour..." hmm, I suspect it's something to do with members.

And dude, when Paul Verhoeven remakes the Grapes of Wrath, I'm confident there'll be a hot tub scene. Possibly involving Elizabeth Berkley.

Not particularly SFW, but funny if you saw the dratted original. Kyle MacLachlan must really have needed the cash.

Well, I say sex is perfectly appropriate for the gym as long as you don't mind having an instructor standing over you.

"Nineteen, eighteen, seventeen... no, you're not supporting your back properly. Here, watch me..."

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

    What really attracts me to my gym is the Olympic-sized spa pool. It is a subterrannean marvel. It sits below a low concrete ceiling at the rear of the changing rooms;

I remember that pool well (don't ask me how I know) and did you know, there wasn't one in the girls. But yes, have to agree with Wallace there, the plunge is the shock back to reality that, you are not at home ;)

But in the spa you are sharing wouldn't pass OSH regulations.

  • BenWilson,

Les Mills has a men's only spa pool? wtf? Now I know why I chose Club Physical.

From the way an ex-gf told it, the place that really needs to watch the inappropriate behavior is the girl's change room, in which total bitchiness about appearance sounds like the norm. My experience of men's is that you don't talk to anyone unless you know them.

Unfortunately, there is no need for a changing room for this sort of behaviour. Girls can be bitches and "time of the month" aint the only excuse.Personally, I try not to go there.(and no, I don't head straight to the mens changing room, Mr LLewellyn) :)

Anybody remember the Pink Pussycat (is that what is was called? It was Pink something, I'm sure) on Ponsonby Rd? The spa pools there were truly disgusting.

  • JackElder,

Frankly, the Wellington branch of Les Mills was generally nicknamed "Les Girls" on account of the high number of gymgoers who used it as a cruising ground. Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind.

You aren't the only one who had that experience with that particular National MP. I'm assuming it was his starter for 10...

  • Renee Jones,

I am acquainted with the spa pool in the womens' quarters of Les Mills and I can't recall seeing any such sign there!

Perhaps they share Queen Victoria's supposed view that women don't do such things (and I say "supposed" because that particular view, which was ascribed to Victoria, was possibly started in Wellington in 1977 "to explain why a demonstration for lesbian equality centred on a statue of Vicky" and so isn't based on Victorian fact at all, if you believe the Fortean Times!)

  • andrew llewellyn,

The original San Francisco Bathhouse in Welly (Willis St, rumoured to have once been a more seedy establishment that it was in the 80s) was notorious for drunken couples displaying their affection in the somewhat publicly sited spa pool.

  • BenWilson,

Jackie, I remember that there was a place called the Pink Pussycat on K-Road, which was a brothel. You'd have to be game to walk in the door, let alone hop in the spa pool. It's not only gone, it's actually been knocked down, now.

not on K rd - it was that building on the intersection of Crummer Rd and Ponsonby. The ASB trust building is on the other corner. It'll bug me now till I know.

And Bette Midler - whom I idolise - started out in San Francisco bathhouses. Apropos of nothing, I guess.

  • David Slack,

The original San Francisco Bathhouse in Welly

In 1979, we lived just around the corner from there, in a house in Athol Crescent, off Boulcott Street. We would often have a meal at the Casabalanca Steakhouse in the old style - plate of white buttered bread, T-bone steak, potato salad, pick a song from the juke box at the end of the booth etc. Then we'd go next door and up the stairs to the San Francisco Bathhouse for any combination of: game of pool, sauna, refreshing glass of orange juice and a Nutoata bar. It was also a knocking shop, but they didn't seem to mind that we weren't there for that.

All gone. Some days, nostalgia submerges me.

  • Dinah Dunavan,

Maybe it was the SF Bathhouse on Willis st that I went to with a couple of mates in the early 80s. We left the pool when a rain-coat man arrived (sans rain-coat). I was really glad they had good showers. Equals my visit to a seedy strip club. Lots of men in the front row in rain-coats and us, as far away from the coats as we could get. We were there to see the one male act (an acquaintance). Chippendales it wasn't.

When we were going there (for the saunas too), there were no "ladies", just a rumour that there recently had been (our bursaries wouldn't have stretched anyway). Good sauna though, with a HUGE plunge pool.

And the Casablanca - good times with mixed grills & truckloads of white bread! They don't do them like that any more.
