A flash structure isn't needed. They just need to shut one of the clipons to cars and split it for half buses and half bikes and walkers.
Then put enough of a toll on to keep congestion under some control.

Is it fair to compare it to the Sydney Harbour bridge? and say 2-3% of their traffic is walking or cycle meaning the Auckl bridge may get 5,000 each way a day?
I have never been to Sydney and don't know the geography quite so well but the northern end of the harbour bridge runs out along the waters edge and has piss all suburban areas near at at that side.
It's not that likely that folks in the cbd area are going to need it to go anywhere.
Then there's the weather .... :(
I'm not trying to be negative but I'd be surprised if many people really did get off their arses and ride or walk a bloody long way from the shore to even get to the bridge which is essentially who this is for.
It's like those gym memberships that end up costing 600 bucks for 6 visits.

Oh, I was talking about Auckland in that second paragraph comparing it to Sydney.
I'm a westie and there is a cycle lane along a good chunk of the northwestern but to be honest aside from the diehards it isn't that well patronised.

Best of luck, David. Hoping the crowd will be beautiful and the weather numerous. Or possibly vice versa.

Pssssst....the the coffee circuit has revealed that some shoreskevites might be meeting at 13:15 on Onepoto domain to honour New Zealand's rich history of civil disobedience. I might go and find out what this is all about.

Did you have a good time Mr Smart ?

Thanks David, it was a good rally, I was a little intimidated by all those cyclists in the one place!

I've updated the post with a short report and a pretty picture.

She missed it by That Much.
I was much impressed by the civil disobedience, by the way.
I was a little intimidated by all those cyclists in the one place!
Sorry I missed you, Julie. I also see, from that transport policy election meeting flyer that was being handed out, that Wednesday night presents a scheduling conflict.

Oh, nice one. Well done, everyone.

artist's impression of the proposed cycle and walkway extension
Were these inspired by those tubes from the tv series 'under the mountain'?
Perhaps you could approach the Wilberforces' to be the primary contractor? -
Heh that's my brother and his kid front and centre. Nice!

I loved this story about cycling anarchy. Big ups to those cyclists, and also to the cops for not getting heavy with them. I'm kinda jealous.

"City cyclists say they're fed up by the thick layer of slime coating the newly opening cycling extension on the Auckland Harbour Bridge. "It got into my gears," said cyclist Darren Watson of Takapuna. "I couldn't even clean all of it out. I'm going to have to replace the chain. Not happy!" When asked for a comment, a spokesperson for the extension's contractor, Wilberforce Tubes Ltd, said, "Twins!" before he started to drip with sweat and scurried off into the bushes surrounding Lake Pupuke."
