  • Craig Ranapia,

And one final thought, perhaps Mr Jones would like to specify exactly who he thinks gave false evidence to a select committee of the House outside Parliament, and the protection of Parliamentary privilege. Twit.

    What I would love to see in next weeks headlines;
"Owen Glen found in Bretheren dungeon"
Mr Glen said today "I did not write that letter, I stand by Mr Peters"

  • Ian MacKay,

If Peters stepped down as FM, is he still able to vote on legislation?
If he was fired from his position as FM, could he still vote?

If Peters stepped down as FM, is he still able to vote on legislation?
If he was fired from his position as FM, could he still vote?

In both cases he could, along with the rest of his caucus. But that would be underestimating his potential to be a self-serving dick.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Of course he can -- the Prime Minister can withdraw a Ministerial warrant, or stand down a Minister for pretty much whatever reason she likes. Doesn't have the power to throw people out of Parliament -- which might not be a bad thing, given the endless temptation. :)

Well, considering that Winston has had a sudden attack of reverse-amnesia and promising to "reveal all", I think Glenn can look forward to having his character assassinated until a round dungeon fun would be light relief my comparison. "All this has happened before and all this will happen again."

  • Andrew Smith,

It's a real pain if it means the ETS legislation can't be passed

No, no, this legislation must not pass. It's one of the most damaging fiscal mistakes this country has made since Muldoon froze prices in the 80's. Why should we jump into this ETS like some excited crusaders when the climate debate is still very vibrant.

  • Don Christie,

This issue does seem to be a storm in a tea cup, more to do with hypocrisy and credibility than matters of law.

For more interesting is looking at the lengths the Privileges Committee is willing to go to investigate a party funding issue. Is this a precedent being set, an admission that all is not right in the secretive side of our democracy?

And, it seems we can go all the way back to the early 1990's with these investigations...stuff to drool over I would have thought.

No it's not. Even the oft mis-interpreted and poorly researched NZIER report demonstrates that that impact on GDP is hardly measurable over the time period it assesses.

    Debate? Bollocks.

I don't much mind whether it's Labour's ETS or a swift replacement from the Nats, but I'm buggered if the taxpaying public should carry the can for polluters.

NZ has already committed to Kyoto, so it's only a matter now of who pays our bill, and establishing an ongoing mechanism to provide incentives for less carbon emissions. The only alternative for global warming deniers is to pull out of Kyoto and kiss our export trade goodbye.

I wonder what is in the envelope Winston is holding in the photograph. Is he contemplating spending his party's funds on a horse?

    Backing himself, surely Paul. :)

Well, I don't think the actual matter of privilege involved is a tempest in the good Wedgewood at all. I know New Zealand First (along with ACT) opposed extending the Register of Pecuniary Interests to all MPs, but they got outvoted.

Watching Winston squirm on the hook of his own hubris is just gravy. :)

Jump in? You mean like all of Europe and soon Australia? I can understand some of the opposition to the ETS, but not the objection that NZ is being precipitate.

I realise that. But hens coming to roost is hardly the point.

I am sure many would like to know, for example, who has been contributing to party funds over the last 20 years, particularly during the mass sell off of NZ infrastructure. It seems we now have a mechanism and precedent for following up on these issues. That is where this whole circus seems to lead and gets interesting.

  • Steve Barnes,

I do hope so. I am sure National has some skeletons in their closet that may be revealed after Winston has been vindicated and comes out swinging in his own inimitable way.
Well I would like to think so anyway, I will eat my words if the accusations leveled against Peters are proved to be true but I will not "jump the gun" and pronounce his guilt before the privilege committee has made it's finding public.

I think Glenn can look forward to having his character assassinated until a round dungeon fun would be light relief my comparison.

I have been thinking about this. Why would Glen want to see Peters "go down"? I don't think he really gives a toss about what the average Kiwi thinks of him so why would he not just continue to back Peters and by association Labour, has he been "nobbled"?. The only reason I can come up with for his, apparent, "about face" would be that he didn't get the recognition he thought he may have deserved for his donations in the past and, to be honest, what is really wrong in getting that recognition "Our man in Monaco" is hardly a position that could compromise the security of New Zealand. Knighthoods and their ilk have been bandied about as a reward for helping out for centuries without causing the downfall of freedom or democracy. To be honest I would be more likely to trust Peters than Key and his shadowy helpers on anything.

  • Gareth Ward,

NZ has already committed to Kyoto

Which is the heart of the matter to me, yet gets absolutely ignored by everyone! We're accruing liabilty for payment right now for every tonne of carbone emitted. We should really be working as fast as we can to minimise that.

Danyl, very interesting take on the statements made re Karaka - there's really no need to make stuff up to hang him with when he's doing a fine enough job on his own.

    Interesting times.

I wonder if Helen will knock back a bottle of whisky this evening and call a snap election.

And will Cullen let her tyres down?

  • Mark Harris,

The only reason I can come up with for his, apparent, "about face" would be that he didn't get the recognition he thought he may have deserved for his donations in the past

Perhaps the reason could be that he has respect for the truth. Perhaps he gave Peters money because he thought WP was the "little man" fighting for truth (which is how Winnie's been marketing himself for years) and now finds that his generous assistance is the subject of a litany of lies by his former beneficiary.

It always pays not to judge the motives of others on the basis of how you would have behaved in their place.
