To pull out a different thread from the OP, am I the only one who still thinks it's a bit trippy to see Russell "Che" Guevara over there <--- in the pink?
-
For shame, Sacha. How is it a con?
I think people are speculating that the con was:
1. Producers saw her beforehand thought "ugly duckling + incredible voice".
2. Producers told judges who played up the "oh who are you and what are doing here?" before she sang.
3. Judges then omg fall over in shock when she opens her mouth and part two plays out.
4 equals 'great TV' and mass viral swoon via youtube = great for show.ie the con is how the show played the opportunity to get the most benefit.

Jackie, I'm referring to some of the discussion that started on the very first page of this thread - about the highly manufactured nature of the show. No reflection on Ms Boyle's skills, I assure you. And you'll note that I am saying above that I also have no problem with enjoying the outcome regardless.

A great voice is a great voice, even if it's not my type of music.

At last, someone says it.
I’ve found it impossible to warm to her purely because that ditty makes my toes curl

That song has been one of the most persistent earworms of my life, too. It's scary how much I've mentally sung it this week.
Jolisa, I updated all the software on my mother's ancient computer just so I could make her watch that clip. It took ages. It was worth it in the end, though, because my mum was thrilled. :)
-
Cloudwalker, regardless of what you think of Clint Rickards as a person, he was never convicted of a sexual offence.
You may hold whatever views you like, but the last part of your post (which I won't repeat) doesn't belong in a public forum.

Yeeeshh, a new damn benchmark; my parents will be at me now!

It's was a very good choice of song (and I"m assuming this was her choice), with its triumphant theme and major keys.
In my other life I've done a bit of performance recently, including one that involved a couple of Down's syndrome guys. It opened my eyes and made me realise that I still held a few prejudices towards mental disabilities, despite, or because of, having a Down's syndrome uncle.
It should go without saying that being a valued member of the community shouldn't be on the basis of your appearance or mental ability, but it won't happen if we don't actively make it that way.

Back at you. When you're sleeping, I'm mentally singing it, and when you wake up, I can finally get to sleep. Your shift now!

I'm still amazed that there were tigers roaming les rues de 19thC Paris. Homicidal orangutans, yes. But nocturnal tigers, that's wack.

Thanks Scott -- I've deleted the sentence in question. This thread is really taking some attention ...

Fair enough, Scotty, I think he did enough to show his utter lack of judgement to be a heartbeat away from becoming New Zealand's top cop (and, FWIW, highest paid civil servant) without going there.
Then again, Rickards has hardly missed an opportunity to slag off Louise Nicholas as a mentally unstable, vindictive pathological liar who repeatedly lied under oath. Or support two chaps who are convicted sexual offenders. He also attacked the integrity of the judiciary, which is not exactly a good look either in a senior police officer or someone who wants to practice law.
So, pardon me if I'm a little short of sympathy for Rickards -- like Veitch, someone who never figured out when to count his blessings and shut the fuck up.
-
Craig, I may or may not agree with you, but as Rickards is now a member of my profession I'm not allowed to slag him off.
-

Actually, that is good Production.Although I don't watch these reality "someone, something" shows, it would seem that around the world people are getting opportunity to show their talents, and good on them for having the courage to try. Good TV has generally got good Producers.Good Casting Directors get the right people.Put the 2 together, you have the beginnings of good Production.:)

We also do not want this forum shut down by other zealous members of that profession.
-
Sorry, lawyers not casting directors.
-

Fair enough -- and I'm not trying to bait you into getting yourself disbarred. Really. Anyway, you can have a clean rap sheet and still be a total scum pot no sane person would let in the house without laying down ground sheets first. Funny old world...

Serious (and possibly naive question) question:
Have there been any forums shut down by lawyers in NZ?
Would removing the offending post/s be the obvious compromise?
-
Yeeeshh, a new damn benchmark; my parents will be at me now!
Just tell them that YouTube is only for trained media professionals or something. ;)
Back at you. When you're sleeping, I'm mentally singing it, and when you wake up, I can finally get to sleep. Your shift now!
Thank god someone else is shouldering this burden! I might be (even more) loopy otherwise.

Just working my way through the thread (Near halfway! Sad!)
Steven:
therapeutic treatment from a clinical psychologist is a privilege, that few can afford.
If he saw a clin psych, it sure didn't take. He didn't even learn to pretend to take responsibility.
Besides, when people say they've had councilling, I tend to assume they saw a councillor or a therapist (neither of which necessarily mean anything as far as I know).
-

They've tried, i.e Stiassny v Siemer. But if the site is not based in NZ and the defendant is prepared to go to jail it can be hard for a complainant to do anything.
I'm not sure if anyone else has tried, but I'm sure many a "cease and desist" letter has been sent.
Would removing the offending post/s be the obvious compromise?
The removal of an offending post will usually satisfy a complainant, although some may also want a public apology. Most complainants don't want to spend thousands on legal proceedings, unfortunately...
-

The mind truly boggles at the threat to society inherent in that otherwise innocent remark...
-

Who isn't? But he wasn't actually convicted of a sexual offence, so ...
-
I don't want to overblow the whole "shut down" thing - in context, remember the warning upthread that any discussions about a certain client would probably attract lawyerly attention. S'all.
-
Fair enough -- and I'm not trying to bait you into getting yourself disbarred.
Thank, Craig - and I'm sorry if that's what you thought, as I wasn't suggesting you were trying to do that.
I just have to watch what I say about some people, regardless of that fact that in many instances I may agree totally with what others have said. I'm probably being overly cautious anyway...
