  • Just thinking,

Well the Ex-All Black has been named & shamed. I had assumed it would be whoever turned up on the next Womens Magazine doing a charm offensive.

TV1s coverage of the "comedian" IMO identified the person charged, by eleminating those it couldn't be with its blurred video.

  • 3410,

Also Slater, who claimed outside court the other day that he'd done nothing to identify that person because there was a child involved in the case.

In actual fact, it was a very thinly veiled "question" on his blog that confirmed the identity for me.

  • Sacha,

There's a more recent thread about all this celebrity suppression (with appropriate exhortation up front by Russell). I for one prefer not having to read Veitch's name again for a very long time..

  • Jackie Clark,

I find this pretty incredible. As if the official policy is " Lay low for a while, mate, and when this has all blown over and you've lost enough that people will feel sorry for you, you can make a triumphant return". Abhorrent.

  • Jeremy Andrew,

I'd boycott the show, but since it's not my scene anyway, noone would notice. I'd complain to the sponsors, but apparently that is offensive to his free speech. Oh well, back to work.

  • Kyle Matthews,

Without knowing what he's been doing in the interim and how different he is from the person that assaulted and abused his partner, I think we should keep in mind that allowing people to return to be productive members of society is a major factor in reducing recidivism.

Given that reporting on sports is his career, it's not surprising that he's returned to it.

But are you going to say he's never allowed to work again? I suppose it's a bit weird that he's going back to the same job after two years, but I don't think it's reasonable to say that a professional broadcaster can never get behind a mic again.

  • Jackie Clark,

I don't think it's reasonable that he never gets to work again, but I do question the ethics of whacking him on a much listened to spot, really.

I don't think that distinction is terribly practical, though. You could argue that sticking him in a graveyard shift would be "getting him back through the back door", etc

Like most folks on PAS, I won't be listening to him, but I acknowledge that he's been tried, judged and sentenced in a court of law, and now has the same right as everyone else to earn a living.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Without knowing what he's been doing in the interim

He returned to the station at the start of this year and has been eased back via sports newsreading and backup presenting roles.

    (From the link upthread.)

but I do question the ethics of whacking him on a much listened to spot, really.

I guess his Radio Sport imposed probo is up and in any situation similar, one gets probation, so without wishing to endorse 3 strikes and you're out Act policy, I guess he has been dealt with accordingly. Remember your ears will be your voice in this radio spot,so if you find it yuk (like me), don't listen.

  • Jackie Clark,

Oh, I won't be listening, Sof. Never do. But it still makes me uncomfortable that he is being put back in a prime position. What message is that sending to his audience? Still smacks of cynicism to me.

Y'know what? I think this is a pretty public place to put him back under public scrutiny. He now knows his best behaviour is imperative to his remaining in the industry at all.
So even if his audience falls back in love with him, it can also be a show of forgiveness, which, many people could do with to make them better in society, even though we know there is also that bunch of scum supporters waiting in the wings.

  • Rich Lock,

Like some evil, neverending game of whack-a-twatcock, as soon as you smack one down, another pops back up somewhere else.
