They were spotted in Warrington in January. Sure enough, there it is. The terrain mapping's new too innit?
-
I have no idea when the picture of our house was taken, but I have a good idea of what I was doing when it happened - I was coming down the drive in our car. Action shot!
-
So I just found myself out in the street with my nice new G1 phone checking out the streetview view (you can hold it up and the compass/orientation/gps allows you to move around in the streetview image) and suddenly thought "what am I doing? I'm looking at my street through my phone when the real thing is right there" suddenly it all seemed quite pointless.
The planetarium program that does the same thing is decidedly cool though

Awright, how'd you get a link that takes us straight there? I have tired of trying.
The linky thing is at the top right. Beware, however, if you have your home address set as your default location, as it will end up in your link!!

Just search for the address and click the Street View option. If it doesn't display the option, there's no view.
Thanks - what I meant though, was how do I get a link that I can cut & paste to take you straight to the street view of a certain property?
It's probably obvious, but.

They get the top of our hedge and the mailbox on Alexandra Rd (in Welly). House is below the line of the road, although you can see the green Holden Vectra parked in all its crumbling majesty on the car pad.
Taken I would say early last summer. The hedge has been clipped and the people on the other side of the gully are still building their gazebo.

That's the one - there's a "link" thingy on the top right of the window.
-
Thanks all - I couldn't have done it without you. Not so quickly, anyway.

Seriously though looks like the Dunedin pics were taken about 11 months ago - possibly between Xmas and New Year
My street was done on a Monday as I can see the empty recycle bins. Probably the 24th December as my ex had borrowed my BBQ for Xmas and I can see it's not there.

The Mount Vic tunnel appears to be a wormhole into another dimension.

When did Google take these images, how does that work?
I saw the GoogleVan driving along Pt Chevalier Rd last Friday, and Norfolk St Ponsonby yesterday afternoon - no idea if they were taking images at that particular moment, or in transit from somewhere else....
I've searched my own address, and they seem to only take images every two hundred metres or so along the street, so I'm still reliant on the sattelite/aerial views to check out my own humble abode.

The one at Royds St, Fendalton, Chch is pretty hilarious given the scandalous nature of what happened there. A beautiful old house was bowled by a developer who ran out of money and left three half-built townhouses on the site. See if you can spot the developer's van. It's the one with Parkside written on it. What a way to immortalise that spot ....

I'm excited that you can see my bed in the photo of my house.

That's fantastic. I have the Doctor Who theme playing in my head now.
Russell, I'm pretty sure I can read your recycling...

Philip: cutting/pasting google maps from the menu bar just gives your entry to the site (in your case Robyn's link to the stargate in the victoria tunnel) - as mentioned above to have to click the 'link' at the top right to get a link to where you have currently navigated to
-
Thanks Paul. I had a feeling that didn't work.
-
The GoogleVan didn't even bother coming up my street, let alone bearing up the right-of-way and attempting the hairpin turn at the top. I have to say, I'm disappointed.
-
Or is it just that all roads eventually lead to the Mt Vic stargate? Freaky, man.
-
The Sydney streetscape's been available for a while. There's dozens of shots down my street including one directly outside my house. I don't particularly like it. I might be out of step here, but my sense is that the technology is too far ahead of the public and risks an over-reaction by government.

I'm pleased to report, thought, that some are even more useless at this than me. On Nine to Noon earlier, Kathryn Ryan had not only not managed to get this thing to work, she had the impression that, when it does, it gives you a live video feed. Or am I missing something?
-
Chilka St is definitely there. Where's the playground?
Corner of Jaypore, but sigh... we're not there! Nor are the drunks who threw a can at the van. The photos of our street and of Berhampore school are more recent than the time when I saw that van, anyhow, I can see the murals being painted. So now I'm wondering who the earlier photgraphers were... spooky.
No, not that, it is a photo of Giovanni. Just in case anybody doesn't know, Giovanni and his offspring transmit an electrostatic (ήλεκτρον) verticals. This is due to Giovanni's, interpolation in the Internet. But he probably should be coming clean on that himself.
Memo to self: Steven Crafword knows too much...

Kathryn Ryan had the impression that it gives you a live video feed.
Nope - just a bunch of static images taken a few months ago.
I don't think google and/or Big Bro have enough cameras to have a video feed of everywhere, all the time.

Except in London.

Most satisfying use of google maps so far (with or without street view): using it to prove to my doubting child that I did walk a mile to school when I was five years old.
And it was uphill all the way home.
