Steve Parks, in reply to
Edit: and now TV1 also, and apparently at Civil Defence request. So we can see what we might be in for if something let go off out coast?
Yeah I heard from Steve Grey on twitter that tv1 apparently left masterchef on, meanwhile tv3 went to the coverage.

Jeebus. My lovely neighbour was just rung by her sister from Kiribati, which is oh, about 1m above sea level at its highest, and due for the tsunami in a couple of hours or less. There have been no sirens, no obvious warning or signs of life, all the govt buildings are lights off, everyone is asleep. Neighbour's sister had seen reports of the earthquake on the hotel tv and wondered what was happening.
Very, very concerning.

i was trapped on the subway, but only for 10 minutes or so. fuck that was frightening. they have an early warning system to stop all trains. then we shook hard for about 2 mins. i was scared what the surface would look like if it was that bad six stories underground.
Miyagi/Sendai area must be a mess. i feel sorry for those people.
-
I did wonder about the bullet trains. Japan is about as prepared as any nation has ever been- and this has hit sooo hard. Buildings swept away.

That really is a worry, Stephen. I hope the tsunami warnings for all other countries comes to nothing, but they are serious warnings and we can see the destruction the waves are capable of. I saw this comment:
"BBCBreaking BBC Breaking News
#Tsunami is higher than some Pacific islands and could go right over them: International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies" -
For the techies, was Brett Roberts unpleasant when he was managing Microsoft NZ? Being a right obnoxious Twitter troll tonight.
-
nzlemming, in reply to
He was, but you need to learn when not to engage personally, buddy. The only way to deal with Brett is either lightly, or expect the worst. He's not stupid, but he is completely one-eyed right wing.

Kiribati is about 3 to 4 meters above sea level not 1, but yeah, they get any decent sized waves and they're in serious trouble. Hopefully the waves have died out considerably by the time they reach there. It is an extremely isolated country.
-
Sounds like the waves are dying out before hitting any other territories so far. Hope that news continues.

Man I’m slow – I’ve only just realised that nzlemming is Mark Harris. Anyway...
Brett Roberts… troll …
Had not heard of him, but I think you throw that term around too loosely. Maybe he’s not “trolling”. Maybe he’s just a fuckwit.

On reflection, I'd say you're right he was genuine in his fuckwittery

Hmmm, hoping that's a good thing...

Sacha, in reply to
(Actually, I did disengage once I realised what he was acting like - all is not lost)

nzlemming, in reply to
Oh, he does troll, but usually about software. Dave Lane (open source guy from Chch) is one of his usual antagonists. I don’t think he was trolling last night, but he wasn’t prepared to listen either.[ETA] which, on reflection, is standard behaviour ;-)

anyway, enough about that. the thread, it is open

3410,
[Speaking at the ACT annual conference, Dr. Brash] insisted, however, that he was not someone who wanted to scrap the Treaty of Waitangi, saying it had been ahead of its time compared to Australia where they used to "shoot the natives".
That statement prompted one delegate to interject "let's bring it in", drawing gasps of disapproval from those sitting around him.

There's interesting debate on BBC if you got it on homosexuality in Africia. "Homosexuality is un-African".

Erm, quality of shots produced? (I suspect droolsome.) -
Other news: while the frog population of Big O waxes and wanes (we have both the Australian brown tree frog & the bell frog here) there is nothing quite like listening to a fresh metamorphosis of tree frogs singing their little hearts out after rain- joy!
"The tree frogs are singing - rain rain!"

Re. Steampunk coffee machines, I coincidentally came across this today.

nzlemming, in reply to
So, singing with gay abandon, then?

nzlemming, in reply to
I love that comic. So over the top.

Re: Coffee. WTF is up with not being able to get a coffee anywhere on Ponsonby Rd after 12pm on a Saturday night? All credibility as 'cafe central' in NZ totally blown.
