  • andin,

More importantly Al Jarreau has died. His brand of smooth soul may not be to everyones taste, it was beautiful, especially when he did his scat vocal interlude's. RIP

  • Neil,

A Trump appointee lying about contacts with Russia is not evidence that the Trump admin has had clandestine contact with Putin.

It is evidence that the Deep State is trying to distract us from Chelsea Clinton's tweets advocating war against Iran.

Anway, I was right and progressives and Hillary caused Trump. ELITES SQUAWK ELITES SQUAWK

    Yours, GG

  • Neil, in reply to andin,

I'm parodying not very subtly the disturbing intent-driven phenomenon of well financed people claiming to be against Trump and Putin but who campaigned against Hillary Clinton and who continue to attack people who are actually opposing Trump and Putin.

  • WH,

This is Slate’s interesting take on ESPN’s in-game estimate that the Falcons were 99.8% likely to win Super Bowl LI. While the statistical gizmos tend to be a little over-confident, the end result was still very unusual:

Because these kinds of comebacks are so rare, Burke told me, it’s very difficult for him to benchmark his model with real NFL data. When sample sizes are smaller, we can be a lot less confident about the predictions we derive from those samples. Based on the evidence we do have and our knowledge of how many points a touchdown is worth, we know the Patriots’ victory in Super Bowl LI was extremely unlikely. It feels like faux precision, however, to say the Falcons were a 99.8 percent favorite with six minutes left to play in the third quarter.

As the author points out, a comeback from 25 points or more down has only happened on a handful of occasions in the history of the NFL. As far as I can tell, it’s happened five times in something like thirteen thousand regular season matches, or in about 0.05% of regular games.

All in all, an unlikely way to see off a season of unusual sporting results.

    One thing leads to another...
I've just been reading through Christopher Fowler's 'Bryant and May' series - highly recommended for the inner polymath and fact hoarder - a comment at his website lead me to this marvellous piece of Live New Yorker copy editing...
WATCH: Andrew Boynton copy-edits recent speeches by Donald Trump.
the video is at the bottom of the linked RomCom in the Age of Trump piece.

Should be live on television, I could watch for hours, as he just cuts away the crazy....

I've found a new way to think about the ongoing range war between Trump and the press over the nature of reality .... Every time you hear a question about whether something Trump has said is true substitute "is wearing no clothes"

IIRC the Washington Post is now majority owned by Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com fame, and the NYT's single biggest shareholder is Carlos Slim. You can also add Tribune Media (owner of the LA Times and Chicago Tribune).

Of the major media networks listed by Katharine above, only NewsCorp seems to have a newspaper division. The anti-trust law experts should be taking a good look at it.

  • Hilary Stace,

This report from Michael Moore is disturbing. Trump is already future-proofing his reign.

    Michael Moore
    19 February at 11:23 ·

Just so you understand: The rally Trump is holding right now near Orlando, Florida is, as his aides are calling it, "an official Re-Elect Trump 2020 campaign rally." On Inauguration Day, Trump filed the legal papers with the Federal Election Commission to establish the "Re-Elect President Trump 2020 Committee." No president has ever done this. Today's rally is sponsored by and paid for by "Re-Elect Trump 2020". I'm serious. This is happening. Trump doesn't intend to leave until January, 2025. He'll be close to 80 then. His filing, this rally, is his way of saying, "PRESIDENT FOR LIFE." HIS life. Not exactly "a Reich that lasts 1,000 years," but when you're a massive narcissist, you don't really give a shit about a thousand years from now -- just the years when you're going to be around to do the damage. Over 50,000 rabid Trump faithful have shown up to this massive rally now underway. This airport hangar can't hold them all. My crew, unbeknownst to the Trump operatives, is inside. Welcome to Nuremberg. Florida.

  • Ian Dalziel,

The worrying thing I’ve noticed is that recently Trump refers more often to ‘his’ or ‘our’ Movement
    Maybe they’re the ‘Minute-hand Men’?

…something I think of much more scatologically when I see Kellyanne Conway ill-advisedly say:

"I’m the Face of Trump’s Movement”

I see the ‘bright Bart’ idea has already been run with…

Except that it was only 9,000. Far fewer than the 15,000 the place could hold (and did when it was used during the 2016 campaign, along with 12,000 outside that they couldn’t fit in). If Moore is getting the basic facts wrong, he’s actually doing the “fake news” that Trump trumpets about. Of course, he could be just trying to bait the WH to decry his incorrect numbers, because then they’d have to note how many people did show up. But I think he just let his hyperbole get away from him.

much more scatologically […] the Face of Trump’s Movement

Which brings to mind Tokyo’s own “Trump Tower” –
the Asahi beer hall statue known locally as the “golden turd”.
