  • Julie Fairey,

I don't get as much time to comment here as I'd like, and the threads tend to get away from me before I have a chance to poke my oar in, but I do enjoy PA, especially the System addition, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. Thanks to Russell for linking The Hand Mirror a few times this year, and also to David Slack for his fantastic contribution to launching Drinking Liberally in Auckland (as well as coming along to the Suffrage Eve Debate and laughing at my jokes).

    Safe holidays everyone!

  • paul travers-jones,

Thanks Hirrily - nice to see you there. Let's also hope that those who find themselves in Baine's position, whether through self-abuse or by way of bad decisions made by Uptonian-like politicians, do not have to suffer in the same way.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Greetings to those few of us still close to our laptops. Yesterday's Waikato Times has an interesting feature on Stuff and celebrity searching

I managed to get a plug in for PAS.

  • Sacha,

"Best" is a damned good plug all right, Geoff. You can tell that these guys know more than they're letting on. I wonder how many searches for "nailing Lohan" will benefit Stuff's visitor count now? And why the site's advertisers would support its focus on celeb sex stories (just check the popular listing any day) if most of the readers of them are actually coming from overseas? What's the business model?

Sorry, this is probably too much like work right now. No pressure.

  • Hilary Stace,

Hey Paul Travers-Jones - I didn't mean to sound sanctimonious about decision-making - it's just what we humans do, and it's not always best evidence-based. Had some interesting Baine related conversations over the last few days - rolling back the decades. Thanks Baine and your truly original eccentric siblings.

  • paul travers-jones,

@ Hillary: Worry not :) - I didn't think you were sounding that way and I think we all concur with your original observations. You did provoke me to register with Public Address finally after being a regular reader for so long.

Paul T-J Why don't you and other members of the family write an obit and send it to the DomPost? Or get them to do one. Fascinating story + great photo.

  • 81stcolumn,

Big thanks to RB et al. It says a lot about PAS and probably less about me that the three best bits of writing ever from my keyboard reside somewhere on these boards. The only downside is how long it takes me to write anything at work. I've started worrying about the my choice of words and idiom, a side effect no doubt of reading and posting here.

It could be so much worse, kiwiblog is what it is but Mumsnet ?. It makes me truly embarrassed to post under a pseudonym.

Oh and in case anybody missed the obits, RIP Harold Pinter.

How could you? Sorry to be this curmudgeonly, but am I the only person on earth who finds Pinter a misogynistic bore?

Craig - I think we might have to agree to disagree on this one. After all you admire Thatcher, and that is beyond my comprehension.

  • Sacha,

81st, I was taken by the inspired "nappies at dawn" tag, but yes those handles are just crap. At least your nick has some intrigue - unlike "CustyDaughterofMediocrity" or "Wewishyouabumperlicious". I did wonder if the whole story was a pisstake.

  • Sacha,

Steven, I simply want to reassure you that I always understand what you are saying, and I like your honesty. Wish I could say that about my own writing sometimes. I hope PAS is improving it.

My analogy of the Public Address System, is that its like a leafy suburb, peppered with state housing.

A bit like Pt Chev ?

  • Paul Williams,

Still tying up loose ends, sometime PA sports-blogger Grant Robertson has his maiden speech up on YouTube. It's a really nice speech with some dry humour and, at about the 12 min mark, a deeply welcome commitment to special education issues. I'm so glad to have someone like Grant in Parliament.

Hear hear. Many can and should claim to be Grant's friend. I'll join the list. Having someone like Grant in parliament almost makes me think of other career options.

Merry Christmas and Happy NY to you and your's Russell. PAS is a vital piece of cultural capital, you (and by association, we) should be proud.

I also admire Samuel Beckett, Dennis Potter and Tom Stoppard -- two playwrights whose lingustic, philosophical, political and dramatic sophistication shows up Pinter for the thin beer he really is. And when it comes to bringing the rats in the suburban walls out to dance, then I'd respectfully submit Alan Bennett, Alan Ayckborn and Simon Gray aren't quite as cosy as their reputations would have you believe.

Broaden that to misanthropic and I'll sign up.

. . . bringing the rats in the suburban walls out to dance . . .

    Ha! (applause).

While Pinter's later political pronouncements came across as surprisingly heartfelt, his "body of work" seemed to cater to some awful small-l liberal appetite for self-abasement.

  • Geoff Lealand,

This seems like a meandering kind of discussion so I will meander in another direction. We are heading south and giving the car CD player a rare work-out. My 15 year daughter has just discovered the songs of Tom Lehrer and I am re-discovering just how damn clever he was. Some 50 years on and he is still sharp as a tack, and The Flight of the Conchords don't seem that innovative anymore.

  • Jan Farr,

@ Geoff Lealand: We were talking about the songs that were banned on radio in the bad old days and I remembered the song Tom Lehrer wrote sending up musicals like Jesus Christ Super Star, the words of which went something like, 'Jesus, you're making it big on Broadway - Gosh it's good to see your name in lights,' etc. I think it was banned in the 70s. I can't find it on You Tube - but there's a lot of Tom Lehrer stuff there that I have now, thanks to you, spent far too long watching.
