  • Simon Grigg, in reply to Chris Waugh,

But then again, I probably have a very different world view from anybody on the Auckland City Council.

    Or the NZ Herald.

  • Sacha, in reply to Chris Waugh,

    "in the likes of Otahuhu"

Town centres predominantly servicing poor people, in that case largely non-Pakeha ones. Denied civic amenities like a swimming pool for several decades while wealthier suburbs got their beaches re-sanded for free. But please don't think Brewer's position is that of the whole Council or even the whole right bloc.

We don't have the population to attract most

    Ikea, even.

I just checked to make sure, and I was right, Ikea does indeed have only one store for the 20 million-odd people of Beijing. And that's in a location with good transport links (although, a rather complicated off-ramp set up for those driving on the 4th Ring Road from the east). So if Brewer's trying to attract them to Auckland, all I can say is "good luck".

Oh, and thanks for the clarification re: Otahuhu.

  • Steve Barnes, in reply to Chris Waugh,

I do know I really enjoyed being in the Queen St area last time we were in NZ and seeing signs in Korean, Japanese, simplified and traditional Chinese, and whatever other languages and scripts there may have been. That had me thinking, “Now here’s a place I could bring my family to live in.”

And the likes of Brewer want to harsh that buzz.

  • Ian Dalziel,

    faux dough shopping...

I miss the old Cook Street Market
and that kind of shopping precinct
(and yes with the Six Month Club
    still upstairs would be nice...)

Victoria park mkt never really got that
    market / people ambience right...
    - cities need bazaars
    the bizarrer the better...

chchch inner city died because people
didn't seem to like to walk a block or two
but malls like Northlands and Riccarton
seem to make people happily walk further...
