  • merc,

I put my horse riding on hold, for now, I ride occasionally to keep it up, but seriously, when I'm surfing I don't like smelling of horse, or dog. I really got muntered over The Horseman thang though, I have some good stories, (I used to ride a horse to work), and of course being that my kin are from Hannover, there's the horses and the KGL (Kings German Legion). Personally I liked Bluchers best (Prussian), the deep purple jackets and the skull insignia, plus...I digress.
When I can't ride boards no more, I will ride a horse again.

  • Riddley Walker,

them there Poles had some fine cavalry. not particularly effective against Panzers sadly, but mighty fine nonetheless.

last time i was riding we were at full gallop over the crest of a hill, only to find a fence just over the other side. that was my 3rd serious concussion.

when I'm surfing I don't like smelling of horse, or dog

is that because of the nasty bitey things beneath?

  • Riddley Walker,

btw, 'Copy of Head" looks excellent. new?

    AKL • Since Feb 2007 • 890 posts Report

  • merc,

Yes, you become part of the food chain, no need to up the ante...I have my own stories...I respect them, sea lions though, eck.
Falling is no fun, falling with extreme predujice (the horse comes back to bite you) is nasty. Best riding in the world here, no question. I adore horses, even the evil ones (it's not their fault). We owe them.
The Poles were quite simply amazing and that's why everyone wanted them gone, and so they were destroyed in numbers that were astounding. Poland is a sad place invaded repeatedly by savages. The Panza charge was...a defining moment in history. When you buckle up and go it is very hard to come back.

  • merc,

Copy of Head predates Sword Head but for some reason I posted it, all the heads are the same anyway, I only paint one painting over and over really, my weird head. Copy of Head is 30" x 30" and very detailed.
Paste and I are working on a portfolio site (Paste paints good) but damned if I want to sell, anyway who'd buy my weird heads?
You should see teh Merc painting...

  • Riddley Walker,

yes Poland has such an unbearably sad history, and every Pole i've met has been such a nice person. the best logicians are always Poles, some say it's because of their diabolically complex and precise language (Polish apparently has something like 22 articles; we have definite 'a' and indefinite 'the').
seeing cavalries slaughtered seems especially tragic, i don't know why.

Whoops duffed that, last time I did that it auto-majically healed, thank you.
BTW, Robert Hass has one of my books.

  • Riddley Walker,

painting the same thing over and over is a good thing to do. that's what we're all doing anyway isn't it?
you should put up a portfolio whether you want to sell or not. unless you don't want to show your work; it's your work, do with it what you will. i liked the copy of head anyway. would like to see Mercurius too if you would load it.
    [that link is broken btw]

  • merc,

It was to the obituary of Czeslaw Milosz, a poet I respect who worked with Robert Hass, the American Poet Laureate, a nice man.
I will of course show my stuff, once you have sent poems into this weary world, paintings are nothing. I will put Merc Head on teh blog.
And yes life is one work, we are lucky for it, though it cares not for us.

nicely said. a bit like the Sea.

    AKL • Since Feb 2007 • 890 posts Report

  • merc,

Yes, I got that from the sea. 10,000, yes I saw that, it is probably just us. I have posted Merc head, it is after a Baboon skull I saw in part, Baboons have skulls like dogs and they murder each other and 2001 A Space Odyssey, shaved apes, machine dogs...

    Sand.

    No one knows
    the sand
    like I do.

    At the very edge

    point of view.

    Definitely unable
    to see
    anything within.

    The seagulls
    stand
    dreaming dead.

  • Riddley Walker,

m head is excellent. you have a talent.
for some reason i always seem to like the last stanza of your poems best.
i have camped out in areas with lots of roaming babs, and had to walk past a few troops. they are really scarey beasts, definitely ape-dogs. when you hear the sound of leopards feeding on them at night (they are leopards' favourite bite), it's also a rather scarey experience.

  • Riddley Walker,

m, I saw seagulls on my travels. Young and old black-backs wondering in a field of grass, and a red-beak with its head and neck soundly planted in a sand dune. It looked like it had just dived in and its wings were still in a perfect W. My companion said it mustn’t have died naturally because if it had it would’ve gone out to sea to do it, and my mind wandered off again on what “natural” could mean. For once I didn’t get to feed the seagulls, but I threw out some stale croissant on to the beach. They probably got them but I didn’t see it.

  • merc,

I watch the Gannets where I live, when I am out to sea, floating. Gannets mate for life. They hit the water at round 70km's per hour, evetually they go blind. Their first flight can be to Australia, I have seen many first off the cliff flights. My Gannets turfed out the Terns after a big storm sent a wave over their island, a world first, they nest on the mainland where I am. I know where and when to catch the next wave by the secret flight of the Gannets returning from way out to see, a 3 point positioning system, they time it perfectly.
Plus they are sacred, the sea birds, because they live in all 3 elements, we cannot.
Once while I was watching the Gannets (Takapu) 3 Bhuddist monks came to me and asked if they could take my photo...they didn't know I don't show up in photos.

  • Kadife Blue,

A gull, stoned by a small boy, dies on a shimmering bed of sand. A gull, knowing that it's heart is breaking, flies out over the sea to sink in its final embrace.

The gull could not forsee the stone but it could feel the break in its heart. But who can say what cause of death is natural.

  • Riddley Walker,

the monks would have been especially thilled by the photo then.
i love gannets as least as much as seaguls. and albatrosses, also single pairers, they have such compassionate eyes. unlike the mollymawk in my opinion, who totally look like albatross turned acid freaks.
there are also neat aircraft that go by the names of gannet (english) and albatross (cherman).

they are sacred, the sea birds, because they live in all 3 elements, we cannot

i first read this as "they are not scared the sea birds, because they live in all 3 elements, we cannot". they never do seem scared. even when they are in distress, they just look inconvenienced.
