Good show to Real Groove and all it's crew for lasting so long
print media about music just seems so antiquated in todays digital age... online is instant and is a much better format for the long interview and obsessive rant... as it can come with audio, video and links to downlaod/purchase etc. something hard copy print just can't compete with
I used to spend up to 300 a month on music magazines of varying sorts... nowadays its zero

That Street Chant cover of 'Young Blood'.
It is streaming here on the Arch Hill site.
Clever readers may be able to find the MP3 behind it ...

Just a question-Does the Groove Guide get released anywhere other than the main centres with a Real Groovy store in it. If so where does that place us out here in the provinces.
-
at the Cabana not the KA?
At a guess I doubt they are looking to expand on the current print run nor locations it can be found...
Cheers for the St Chant tip Russell, was brilliant & funny as hearing them play it at at the critics choice thingy

Groove Guide does appear in Dunedin cafes etc, and we no longer have a Real Groovy.
It (all?) seems to be online here: http://www.realgroove.co.nz/Gigs.aspx

Chris Bourke didn't edit Real Groove though he did write for it (and edited Rip It Up). I'm looking forward to the launch of his Blue Smoke book in Wellington tonight.
I co-edited Real Groove with Nick in the mid-90s (he wrangled most of the words and writers; I helped write, and subbed, scanned pix, designed and composited editorial and ads - on a Mac Quadra, those were the days), before Real Groovy boss Chris Hart decided that if we wouldn't move to Auckland we had to go, and Russell Baillie took over. :(
Agree about John Russell. And that Joe Nunweek is talent. He's on the money; the only music mag I regularly read in print now is The Word.

on a Mac Quadra
looxury - try a bog-standard pizzabox LE

Not sure where to post this but I guess this music thread is as good as any but just heard that Ian Morris died last night. Since he moved to Hawkes Bay he's been a fixture at the Cabana doing sound and playing in bands, recording and mixing and generally being a good guy for music here.

that is sad news -
Sad news indeed.
Chris Bourke did indeed edit RG. Here's the honour roll - don't think I've missed anyone:
John Dix
Mark and Nick
Russell Baillie
Andrew Palmer
Chris Bourke
John Russell
Brock Oliver
Duncan Greive
Sam Wicks -
What a sad, sad thing it is re Ian Morris.
-
Also to mention Ian wrote on the web, but you'd get that with someone with a song called Boot up (downloadable natch). His ability to get something good sounding from early 80s equipment instead of that flat drum beat that dominated and I know everone will lead with him as a Dude but his production career was widespread, longer and I think more influential.
And that just in the music. Arohanui to his family and friends.

My bad, thanks Gavin.
The launch last night in Wellington of Blue Smoke was terrific. Huge turnout, lovely speech from Chris, nice emceeing by Piripi Walker, plus Wayne Mason, Wayne Mowat, Ray Ahipene-Mercer and an a capella group doing the title track before turning it into a singalong. Sam Elworthy of AUP, in a message from the Frankfurt Book Fair, called it the best book he's ever published.
Later, on the way to dinner, the pianist in the West Plaza foyer was playing 'The Street Where You Live' from My Fair Lady which was just... perfect. (Read the book to find out why.)

that is sad news
Terribly sad news, way to young.

Rust in Peace, Ian.

Very sad news about Ian. I didn't really know him, other than from playing at Cabana, but he seemed really nice. And he had 2x vintage 1176 compressors in his front of house system. In my book, that is a sign of true class.

Music awards were a hoot. I loved the opening pop trifecta. Not at all my cup of tea musically, but I thought those boys owned it. And great to see some excellent break dancing at this sort of event.
...also Anika, woah what a performance. Her crazy tongue in cheek soul bit was fantastic.

What were Gary Steels 'factual' errors that let his article down?

What were Gary Steels 'factual' errors that let his article down?
I'd hazard at least one error would be that
Real Groove was......New Zealand’s only serious music publication
I think Rip It Up and New Zealand Musician could lay claim to being serious and still continue...
...and Murray Cammick's SHAKE! was a
far better pop magazine than RTR Countdown
- but I'm biased! -
the only music mag I regularly read in print now is The Word.
Ditto. I have had a subscription for two years. Their electronic Something for Friday bulletins and samplers are real bonuses.

Nice John Lennon birthday animation on the google search page today
Oddly, it appeared on the Thai google page on the 8th and was gone by the 9th....
Maybe we were beta..

Russell was saying Gary had made some 'factual' errors in his music awards article that let it down.
I'd be interested to know what these were. He seemed pretty on the money to me.
