  • James Liddell,

This James at Editing the Herald. Is he "one of us"?

There are more of you, Steve? Sweet jebus, I thought you were a prototype not yet approved for mass production. ;-)

The Facebook group says the blog is run by a person called James Coe. Interestingly (or perhaps not), I went to school with a guy of the same name. I'm assuming it's him.

  • Mark Harris,

And was Melody Rules really that bad? I confess I didn't see any of it.

I watched the first episode and sought to avoid future contact. The main problem that struck me was Belinda Todd's character and I don't completely blame her for it.

Why they cast someone with a reputation for "zany improv bimbo" (in the nicest possible way) in a straight role I could never understand. Melody was not the comedy character, she was the "sane one in a field of insanity" that everything happened to. Todd cut her teeth on TV3's late news where Joanna Paul filled that role and Todd played the naughty, but sexy, BFF. And they had some good moments together.

I recall the script being very formulaic, and unfunny, and all the 'humour' was channelled through a series of grotesque interludes with 2 dimensional characters impinging on Melody's life. Plus the age of the two kids was enough to push her from MILF to "looking good for her age" territory, which wasn't going to score her points with a large part of the demographic.

  • Don Christie,

The question really is: What the hell is such a minor kerfuffle

Someone probably wants to get rid of him. Is he a Labour appointee?

  • Rich of Observationz,

    I think with name suppression:

    - there seem to be a lot of cases where a whole set of trials are interlinked so that all but the final one needs to be suppressed to avoid prejudicing the others. Can't the courts organise things to avoid this?

    - I don't really buy the idea expressed in the document that nobody has "special status" deserving name suppression. All Blacks charged with assault certainly seem to.

    - the document doesn't talk about jurisdiction in the case of the Internet. Maybe Graeme could answer this, but is there any way an NZ court can enforce a name suppression order overseas, especially in the US where they have a more robust approach to free speech (and a laxer approach to justice)?

Yeah, well actually Mark, I still see Nightline that way, come to think of it, all "News" programmes grab me like that.

For the Nightline edition following the Aramoana massacre, Joanna Paul fronted the entire show alone, in funereal black. There were, it seemed, times when Todd's manic manufactured ditziness was deemed unsuitable.

    Not really. No.

They may be able to get anyone in New Zealand who assisted in posting it there, but there is no pretence of extra-territorial jurisdiction.

  • Rachel Cunliffe,

I was at the launch and your source is correct: he did say "chip" paper, not "s***" paper. She can't have been listening well, because he repeated the wrapping up in chips line a couple of times.

The comments about Ms Bowron were rude *but* they should never have been front page news fodder.

I've blogged about it over on Throng

  • jon_knox,

After some success in viewing Media7 from TVNZ's On-Demand site last week, I am back to commiting the crime of attempting to watch content from outside of NZ....guess that's why the youtube link has been provided.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

    Whatever happened to Belinda Todd?

Last seen working in PR. Lots of people seem to want to know - her name keeps turning up in the referer logs for my website.

And was Melody Rules really that bad? I confess I didn't see any of it.

It wasn't as bad as we remember it to be. The main problem, I reckon, was that the style of comedy it used wasn't one that had any history in New Zealand. It was based on the American sitcom, with its roots in vaudeville, so of course it wasn't going to work in New Zealand.

Factoid: one of the friends of Melody's younger brother was played by a young actor who went on to be the internationally awesome graffiti artist Askew.

Also, the two years that Belinda Todd and Joanna Paul co-hosted Nightline were golden.

  • Sam F,

And in other news Kanye West has announced he is spending the rest of his life standing in front of a mirror as he is just so fucking awesome.

I remember hearing Kanye West being intereviewed recently about 808s and Heartbreak on the radio. I came in a little late to the programme, and didn't hear who it was - and was astonished by how unexciting the music sounded, and the plainly enormous distended ego of its maker.

Was shocked to finally realise it was Kanye West, both because I had no idea he was so enormously in love with himself and because I've generally loved the music he's put out to date. The 808s stuff - just can't get into it somehow. Maybe it's just that T-Pain has ruined vocoder vocals for everybody.

Another tack: I somehow missed out on Melody Rules , but do remember Ice TV ripping the hell out of it.

It has been discussed. Indeed, NZ On Screen would love to do it.

In other news, the Herald, as part of its tireless drive to decrease the sum of human knowledge, has thrown the question What would you tell Andy Shaw about TVNZ's programmes? to the Your Views brains trust.

  • Emma Hart,

It's a proven medical fact that television viewing destroys braincells, (I saw that on an infomercial), and the people who watch television are those who can least afford to lose any.

    My tummy hurts...

  • Emma Hart,

I'd love less crime shows, soaps and so called reality shows. How about something for people with slightly higher iq's.

Reality and satire just became completely indistinguishable.
