  • Sacha,

Thanks, Sofie. Anyone who thinks the phrase "hidden agenda" is unfair ought to read that story. When are the Nats going to have some ideas that aren't a tired re-run of the 90s, like their front bench. Craig, you need to give em a rev up. Voters deserve a genuine choice.

And just to restore the self respect of we ladies, here's an interesting comment on tax credits from Mary Holm

  • Paul Rowe,

Was she really this stupid as an MP?

Compared to some of her Act colleagues, Coddingtonswallop was positively gifted.

If you're going to mention "The Great Schlep" you have to include Sarah Silverman's promo

Thanks for posting, Paul, I got distracted by real life.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

What is it about Hooten? When you say Winston Peters, he comes out barking mad with the widely reported "you're a f**king c***".

That outburst on Willies Eye to eye this morning just lends sympathy to Peters.

On the positive side it shows National has its fair share of loons.

I wonder if that will make it to youtube?

  • Russell Brown,

Okay, this isn't even funny any more.

The woman who stood up at the McCain rally and told him she was scared because Obama is an "Arab terrorist" (it appears that is what she said) is a McCain-Palin volunteer who got her knowledge from a pamphlet given to her by a fellow campaign worker. It appears the campaign offices are a distribution point for more of this racist effluent.

Josh Marshall has a commentary and links to a video interview (with transcript) with the woman in question.

Did you just make that up? According to this article Obama had a white mother, a Kenyan father, an Indonesian step father and he was brought up in Hawaii.

  • linger,

    Far far upthread, Evan

once submitted a movie review of "Goodbye Pork Pie" to IMDb using the term hoon to describe Gerry [...] The yankee editors changed it to goon

    And it's still there!
In defense of IMDB, however, the movie does contain this exchange [on the streets of Wellington]:

John: Cut it out Gerry, they're not even looking at us.
Gerry: They are, they're looking at us.
John: They're looking at us now, you've crashed a red light, you goon.

By contrast, the word "hoon" doesn't appear once, which is a bit strange for a movie that was released in the US nearly three years after its local release (i.e., the script couldn't have been decided by impact on overseas sales).

(As it happens, I just had occasion to transcribe the entire thing for class use.)

Yeah, she says "Arab", not "Arab terrorist". And to McCain's credit he puts her straight.

And Mr Jackson even ended the show with a sympathetic rendering of this (much funnier) plea from Lyndon Hood: Satirists Urge Winston Not To Resign.

I salute you. You are a natural provocation to ridicule, you make it so easy; you have been the training wheels for a generation of political joculators.

You have achieved that complex and nuanced kind of paranoia where you manage to act irrationally even allowing for the way they are all out to get you. And as the saying goes, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you're not also a raving narcissist.

  • WH,

I guess you hold an election with the country you have. I watched the second debate with two Californian conservatives. Both said they wouldn't vote for Obama on the grounds that they feared for his life if he was elected, although I came to suspect there was more to it than that.

  • tussock,

My 14 year old niece just wants the latest cell-phone ... I'm not sure if she's ready to select the next government.

Ask her. I think you'll find the only reason she wouldn't know all about income tax, budgeting, and employment law is that no one's taken the time to explain it to her. God knows the politicians are all shy enough with laying out the facts and figures and expecting people to seriously think about it all.

And of course Obama's an Arab. His daddy's a Muslim, so he's got some of that in him through his blood. The Arabs they're at war with are Muslims too. Therefore Obama is an Arab.

Heh, I just reverse engineered their logical flaws.

    --

Coddington. Is that some sort of a cunning add for the Labour party? A sort of "remember all the good they've done? Well we'd smash it all to bits if we could".

  • TracyMac,

Thanks for the stonking track, Russell. I'll be getting yet more of Mr Free's oeuvre, I can tell. Why o why did Mesh never release anything, even a poxy EP?

Getting back to Kiwisaver and tax cuts, did anyone notice the sloppy journalism in The Herald (why am I surprised), essentially saying that the majority of people would be better off with the proposed National tax cuts, since they're earning at or over the average wage. Has no-one understood the difference between average and median in journalism-land? I wandered through the Statistics website, and found the illuminating datum that the average wage was about 10K more a year than the median. That median wage is around $37,000 (sorry, can't be bothered digging out the links again).

  • JohnAmiria,

The 12 year old's of 2020 (those babies born this year) will probably be as sophisticated as the 18 year old new voters of 1975.

The 12 year old's of 2020 (those babies born this year) will probably be as sophisticated as the 18 year old new voters of 1975.

So I guess we can look forward to a demand from 12 year old's in the 2020 election for a lowering of the Age of Consent?
"If I'm old enough to vote, why aren't I old enough to f@#k?"

Oh, is that too crude? Should I have just made an analogy to the Drinking Age? My daughter will be 19 in 2020 -- she'll probably be the oldest female in the Nightclub by then.

Seriously, if you think a 12 year old has the mental capacity to vote responsibly then it follows that they also have the mental capacity to drink responsibly and make a responsible choice as to whether they have sex or not. So how can you deny them those rights?

Aha! But they only get to vote once every four years!! Good point, maybe we could give them a 'Free Pass' on Election Day, good for say 24 hours. They can vote, collect their 'Permit', go the Pub, get a drink, and then ...

I'm sure it would boost Youth Voter turnout immeasurably.

We were actually quite a long way towards doing just that, when Paddy left to form Pitch Black. There were, I think, about 6 or 7 tracks recorded. It all got a bit complicated.

A great band who were never really documented.
