  • giovanni tiso,

    Key's speech.
I'm gonna puke. It's not the alcohol, it's the cliches.

So New Zealand is now officially a blue state. And we have a new prime minister who's a bumbling idiot. Time to relocate the Daily Show, don't you think?

  • sagenz,

The fact that JK's people think he needs a ring of bodyguards at his own victory party sends a shiver up my spine.

Perhaps they feared further infiltration :)

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Worst bit from Key's speech - when he said he had contacted Tariana Turia and told her National had a "willingness to engage in dialogue" with the Maori Party. You can take the boy out of investment banking, but you can't take investment banking out of the boy, evidently.

Best bit - Grant Robertson winning Wellington Central. I'm really happy to have him as my local MP. It's the first time the MP I've voted for has won!

I'm off to bed now. I live-blogged the whole thing and did a bit of Twittering too. It's a fun way to enjoy election night when you're not within reach of a crazy election night party.

  • Tom Semmens,

I would like to see Cunliffe the leader, he is a remarkably robust debater and he'll really take the fight to the Nats.

It is curious. This election hasn't been greeted with the relief that greeted the end of the hated 1990's National government, or the joy of the change in the US this week. The change seems to be for change's sake. No one seems particularly attached to National, although a lot of their base seems motivated by a fair degree of small minded spite.

  • Stephen Judd,

Robyn: you're in Raglan? Then I recommend a trip down to the heads - do not swim, you will die - and a meditation on the eternal verities. We'll be dead, there will be undertow. I could do with some surf right now.

  • Paul Litterick,

Stephen, I left Labour a few weeks back, but I voted for it. I wouldn't do the same under Goff, for the same reasons as yours.

Having worked for Judtih Tizard, I take issue with those who are gleeful she is not in the Caucus. Judith did a tremendous amount of work for no reward, within the party and without.

  • Caleb D'Anvers,

I am thinking now about joining a political party, for the first time in several years. I can tell you now that no party led by Goff will ever get my vote, let alone my labour, ever ever ever.

I've been thinking the exact same thing tonight. Goff is a hideous anachronism, but if he doesn't get the leadership, I will consider joining. I don't think I can deal with these next 3 years without getting involved somehow.

Three and a half thousand votes margin. Over 10% of the electorate votes and over 25% of the Labour votes in the electorate.

Look at that as an indicator across the rest of the country

Paul, l suspect we do not have similar outlooks in many ways, but I am glad to hear that. Goff is an authoritarian. He can be as right-on as he likes on other heads, but I am convinced that he would have dobbed his parents in in a cultural revolution.

ae. none to bright those green voters...

    Yes indeed!

In Epsom 2,050 voted Green, but 2,204 voted for Keith Locke... not that tactics would have shifted Hide (because of the Nat voters who did understand MMP), but you do have to seriously wonder about some of these people!!

  • Hilary Stace,

There is some great new talent in the Labour caucus like Grant Robertson and Jacinda Adern, just two of the Prime Ministerial prospects for the future. And two new Greens including my old friend Catherine Delahunty. She's been taking on the right, and authority in general, since she was an articulate teenager.

So don't despair. Regroup, watch the right slowly disintegrate around the tensions of just how right (ie wrong) they can be. Far right policies have never been popular in NZ as they are against our basic values of fairness. There will soon be a lot of disappointed people waiting for their pay back for voting for Key.

So from tonight the return to the left starts.

And didn't Helen provide a new benchmark for gracious integrity.Accepting responsibility and stepping down. What a legacy.

  • Joe Wylie,

It's petty, I know, but I'm v. pleased to not see Tizard there, but she is the next on the list.

No it's not. With Tizard as Minister of consumer affairs the churches, for chrissake, were more pro-active in protecting the vulnerable from the ravages of loan-sharkery. And this under a government that was supposed to stand up for the disadvantaged. The only downside to Deborah Coddington's departure from parliament was that she kept a certain amount of pressure on an otherwise brazenly incompetent and self-serving politician.

I cannot see how John Key can knit a pretty wide range of ideologies into a cohesive body, unless he employs Helen to negotiate for him.

__Our main strengths as a nation are food production and scenery__

The problem wasn't that he said that, the problem is that he's proud of it.

And if that's Key's idea of "amibition" then we're royally stuffed. I'm hoping otherwise.

  • Craig Ranapia,

They say people deserve to get the government they vote for - good people, what do you say?

Islander: I'd say show a little bit of Clark's graciousness -- which I'm not ashamed to say I found rather moving. I won't insult anyone's intelligence by weeping a single crocodile tear that she a caretaker Prime Minister on her way out. But I've always respected her considerable political skills and intelligence (even when I've questioned their application), and the kind of sheer bloody-minded determination it took to rise to the top, and stay there, in a very tough political school.

But she said that she respected the outcome in our democracy, and I'd respectfully suggest she has more reason to get her bitter on than anyone else here. And she didn't, to her very great credit.
