  • Jackie Clark, in reply to James Butler,

I love instrumental music. It's okay - I won't inflict any on you! (And I have heard their stuff - searching through videos, the Toccata is what I remember the most.)

My partner loves that Nico album but we've agreed that it should probably never go on in my presence. Velvet Underground & Nico? Sweet as. Nico on her own? Yeh nah, no thanks.

My brother had a dog called Nico. I always thought it was appropriate...

  • Jackie Clark,

I mean, how can you not love that guitarist's jersey?

  • Peter Darlington, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

However, UB40 will always make me want to drill out my ears.

Heh, funnily enough it was hearing some of UB40s 12" dubs as an impressionable young man that got me hunting out the good stuff from likes of Scratch and Tubby.

    Your point still stands though.

Heh. Actually I just realized that my real musical torture is "all the tapes my Dad used to play in the car on the drive to Napier". Coming up next: Dave Brubeck.

  • Adrian Coysh,

I used to work in a pub in London in the early 1980's (strange for a kiwi). You soon get to hate the hit of the day, which got relentlessly played on the jukebox. Under Pressure by Bowie/Queen was a huge hit, and I still loathe it with a passion like no other to this day.

I begged the guy who came to collect money from the jukebox to take it out, but of course they could tell which songs were doing the business so it was not going anywhere. In the end I resorted to unplugging it and putting up a sign that it was out of order.

Sorry Mr Bowie, if this affected your income back then.

  • Peter Darlington,

Can I throw in a late shout for Arcade Fire as well please? Seems to have an amazing ability to make me switch a radio off.

Also, funnily enough, almost anything that Kim Hill plays...

Oh James. Now you've just broken my heart. If I was on a deserted island, all alone, and I could take the back catalogue of only one artist, it would be hard to choose from Elton John, and Dave Brubeck. Oh, I couldn't do without Simply Red. Or Pet Shop Boys, or.....okay okay. I love Brubeck. Nuff said.

  • JacksonP,

    Torture tinged with nostalgia.

The torture is obvious, but it also reminds me of a roller disco in Mangere in 1981.

Guess you had to be there. Which I was.

    Bohemian Rhapsody

You just haven't heard this guy doing it. Via R Sproull on Twitter.

So bad it's good. I loved that in my teens growing up in the suburbs; then I hated it as a city would-be in my 20s and 30s. Then I came to love it again. This, on the other hand, is appalling:

  • BenWilson,

I like practically everything people have hated on here (I did once like even the album I hated on). I expect this thread is going to end up being littered with the greatest music ever made, whose only crime was to be loved too much by too many of the wrong people. But I'll still love you all, and keep my musical tastes to myself (again).

  • Ethan Tucker,

One summer working a student job in a well-known bookshop chain I was subjected to the Priscilla Queen of the Desert soundtrack on endless loop, for what may have been the entire 2-3 months. Teeth grating ensued. It was eventually replaced - oh joy! - with the Gipsy Kings - oh noes! All together now: 'DOO do, do do de do do DOO doooo...'

  • Gareth Ward,

The.... Grease soundtrack. That was hard to even type.

I think I realised there is actually one OK song in that movie somewhere but there is no f*&%ng way I'm putting myself through listening to it to find out.
