Thanks Russell, I am glad I managed to hang on to the negatives that long, through moving continents and the dynamics of life until I ended up with a negative scanner.

I wonder if this other photographer still has some. Thats me on the right, Mr Sweeney in the center. And yes, what is he wearing?

I was inspired by poring over NME in my youth maybe. Anton Corbijn etc.

  • Brian Murphy,

It was fun being there! At all those concerts where people I knew played. I just played their records and took photos.

There are some fruity pictures of Mr Sweeney!

That's cool – I was getting the same from reading the words. And yeah, Corbijn is the archetypal NME photographer.

It is indeed. He and Steve are slowly (because they're perfectionists) working on a re-release of the Stridulators stuff.

  • Rob Stowell,

Christchurch feels similarly bereft of venues at the moment. Not much operating apart from the Darkroom. Luckily Lyttelton is stepping up: the Hellfire Cub, Coffee Company and Wunderbar all right-sized (small, intimate, funky, friendly) venues for a good night out.

  • Tim Michie,

I love our music sites, Audioculture and Russell’s Friday Music post in particular and as a case in point I note how PA already covered these Hall of Fame candidates (h/t Jezebel.com*):

Sister-Rosetta Tharpe: The Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll
I believe I owe @dimsie tweet thanks for this lesson:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sister_Rosetta_Tharpe

    What Happened, Miss Simone?

Running Up That Hill: The Kate Bush Story

    Occasional mentions of the Eurythmics.

And more than I could list of Chaka Khan

Oh, and there’s Judas Priest and Radiohead too. I’m sure someone will have links for those…

    * Selection/voting doginess noted in article and comments but at least it’s an excuse for some great performances, like only a blinding Prince solo, which I suspect is more the point. If only this years’ were on stage.

  • Sam Bradford,

Noise control really shits me. They came round to my house a while ago because we were talking too loudly on our lawn during a mellow social gathering. On the other hand, if some dufus wants to rev his skill-saw at 7am every Sunday for two years, that's fine.

I think Melbourne recently instituted a rule where apartment dwellers can't complain about noise from a venue that was there before they bought the apartment. Seems like a good idea to me.

a rule where apartment dwellers can't complain about noise from a venue that was there before they bought the apartment

And we could require new apartment developers to install proper sound insulation from the get-go.

Perhaps it'll save them from Sydney's fate. Once the new opulent overlords have destroyed the last vestiges of any surviving nightlife they emerge onto their balconies and mop up the schoolkids.

  • Ken Double,

Sad to hear of the end of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn but perhaps we should be grateful it was there as long as it was. It was originally created as a temporary pop-up to give Hallertau a presence in the city. The brewery talked ex-Matterhorn partner Sam Chapman into doing it even though he was reluctant to return to hospo. (No such luck for Sam of course, he's now running the Sherwood in Queenstown.) Matterhorn architect Al Cox designed the fit out with splendid discretion. We came up and played there once, thank you Matthew! I shall miss it as much as Auckland will.

    Reel People--Poster for Lealand.pdf

Not quite music but Christchurch folk (Rob, Ian, David et al) might be interested in an interesting 30minute film I co-produced this year, which screens at the UoC (Lecture Theatre A9) on Tuesday Oct 17 at 12 noon. I will be there, to introduce it and answer any and all questions.
The film is "The Reel People of New Zealand" (Nick Homler, 2017); a homage to independent/art house cinemas in New Zealand, as seen through the eyes of a young American film-maker. Alice in Videoland and Christchurch features! It first screened on Doc Edge 2017, in Auckland and Wellington.
