  • giovanni tiso,

my nomination for international comedian of the year award

This year? I liked him at first but he seemed pretty keen on endlessly recycling himself, while the material itself remained unspectacular. But perhaps he's better these days.

  • Paul Williams,

Actually Gio, that's a reasonable criticism - he's got half a dozen themes he updates with new/modified stories and his last tour, Sexie, was the weakest but Glorious is genius!

But what would I know..I didn't get Seinfeld either

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  • Simon Grigg,

unless you want to get verbally hammered

Ok, it's not a hammering, but see! :

    You didn't like Ep 5 Season 2?

Actually I saw much of Season 1 (about the only NZ thing you can find on TV here apart from Outrageous Fortune and that old show about dirty restaurants which would've completely confused many in this corner of the world) but kinda switched off after that, so I accept I may've missed the odd gem, but it just all seemed a bit lame to me.

  • Thrash Cardiom,

Christine Rankin as the head of the Families Commission? Given she is on her fourth marriage she must be perfect for the job having had so many families.

The stage was now set for the Alan Parsons Project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.

A mysoginist hovercraft, to be precise. It's knowledge, bro.

I don't particularly like what Rankin's about or stands for. I think she was a poor public servant and has hardly done much since to redeem herself since. It's these reasons why I query her appointment to the Commission. That said, I don't think her personal life ought to be a factor in her suitability for public offices. I realise this is the "Families" Commission, but families continue even when parents split. It appears that three marriages justifies some criticism? Would two be ok? What number is acceptable and why? Is not having been married a disqualification?

There are some really good reasons to criticise this appointment, but that's completely fucking irrelevant.

  • Kim Sokolich,

    Another threadjack...
Watching Campbell Live, Melissa Lee didn't show for an interview to answer questions about her owning the media company that produces Asia Downunder and receives govt funding!! They had an earlier recorded soundbite from her saying that she didn't see it as a conflict of interest!! WTF!!! Jim Tully disagreed. I am astounded that John Key can't see the conflict either.

Of course... because let's not fuck up a good rant with anything within spitting distance of reality. Why don't we just go here and be done with it?

Personally, I'm a little more worried that the Law Commission has some issues with democracy.

Oh, what a fucking bitch! Really! You can dismiss me as a partisan hack if you must, but as so often happen with Campbell Live I wonder if there's a legitimate story in there that just happens not to be the one they're trying to beat up.

    Jim Tully disagreed.

    Not quite, Kim.

In general, I agree, Paul. In this case though I believe Rankin's marital status compared with her pronouncements over the past few years about the good old nucular family are fair game. TV news had some footage of her stridently slagging Helen Clark for not having had children, so she's obviously not averse to dishing it out.

Actually I used to think you were a pompous partisan hack Craig but your recent posts have mellowed my opinion somewhat. Come on step it up!!!

Do you mean Jim Tully didn't disagree. He seemed to. He did say making her Minister of Broadcasting would definitely be a conflict but it was a bad look all the same. You don't think so?

  • Lucy Stewart,

Charlaine Harris was somewhat shocked at how explicit True Blood was so she sits somewhere between Hamilton and Meyer in Bite to Bonk scale.

*Really*? Because given the amount and explicit nature of the sex in the books, she has no excuse being shocked. (True, they're not Hamilton, but Hamilton's heroine can barely walk three metres without shagging someone.)

OTOH, I much prefer that to Meyer, whose heroine wakes up with convenient sex-induced amnesia. And lots of bruises. Because, hey, the books *weren't creepy enough*.

sadly I think we can blame someone closer to my soul than Denver for Parsons.

I belong to a couple of forums where folks adore him as Balearic . Mostly, I keep well silent. We can however point the finger at Parsons for opening the door to a whole genre of appalling faux operetta...him and Pete Townshend, who I can forgive.

    Lolz a palooka

may as well throw my hat in the ring as eat it
though some excellent contenders have gone before

    punchlining above one's weight

    nice...
maybe I should quip while I'm ahead

Good to see the Topps added to the Pantheon
and there may even be room for Red Mole and BLERTA
at the table in Valhahahahalla - yeah I know Simon
    - I'm showing my age : )

being a fan of the more absurdist and wordist realms
I'm surprised there are no Mighty Boosh boosters out there,
it's is the closest thing I've seen to a modern day, visual Goon Show . with a touch of a more cerebral Young Ones

and let's face it aural / radio comedy is in scarce supply
    - I miss it. The Goons, Peter Cook n Dudley Moore (I still have my autographed copy of the Dagenham Dialogues ) and lest we forget the Gods - Frank Muir and Denis Nordern - the English language has never properly recovered.

and what's that Sweetman chap got against Alice's Restaurant
it's still "cutting edge eco-comedy" in places (which I can still recite most of...)

and there's Lenny Bruce, George Carlin - but that's not keeping it Kiwi - so I'll taper off

    Fangs for reading dept:
You want southern vampires in small towns?
    - Try Poppy Z Brite's books.
True Blood - I'm waning on a tad, feels a bit Twin Peaks
and Northern Exposure (oops just did a Sweetman!) and the imagination doesn't get taxed much - bite, bonk, literal rednecks, more bonking, yawn - but Anna P does do well and I liked the Hep V idea, and other bits n bobs - I'll keep watching for a while...

(NB: Free Hep C awareness concert in Latimer Square in chch this Sunday 17th, 11-4 - Squirm & Dialtones and more)

The World Buskers Festival has showcased a few smart gems too
the earlier mentioned Wilson Dixon and Brits Hoopal from way back to name two that didn't have to fall back on bottom humour or just shouting....

    it's a funny old world...

    ya have to laugh!
