I have it on good authority that several of the Clarke methods breach the Geneva Convention

    So, it's all good.

  • Hilary Stace,

    Thanks Heather
Thanks for that info but that's a pity.

Re the great childminder. She says in her experience the middle child of three often has more behaviour 'issues' than the other two, but they grow up into very interesting adults

Well, MSNBC seems to be trying to position itself as the "liberal Fox" -- which seems to me to be missing the point, and hitting a forest full of cute and harmless critters. Then again, I'm one of those old crusties who believes in the separation of journalism and editorialising, the idea that interviews aren't the same thing as Dada monologues, and that there's a meaningful distinction between fact and fiction.

  • Stephen Judd,

No, I have no idea what that would look like either.

Sacha, somewhat like this, I expect:

  • giovanni tiso,

If she's half as interesting as an adult as she is as a child, boy...

I want her treated at least as a lawful enemy combatant - that's how I often think of her (hopeless romantic that I am).

And I don't even have to raise my voice. Torture is so much more effective when it's done in silence.

Ah, the poor middle child. Hilary's friend is right IMHO. They're still figuring out social dynamics with their older sibling, and working out how to get what they want, when WHAM, you drop the bomb of new baby on them. Still, at least at 3, they're still pick uppable, and tucking under your arm-able.

Sacha: I thought you were totally innocent of the man and his works, and if so you might want to stick to the scientific method where you test a hypothesis before coming to a conclusion.

And I don't really give a fuck which way you dress politically speaking, if you're making statements like "I want to do everything I can to make this thing work, this new Presidency work." -- you're not a journalist, you're a hack. And you certainly shouldn't have a high profile role in any news organisation with any pretence to journalistic credibility.

  • jon_knox,

giovanni - I hope it's just a phase your middle child is going through, but it sounds fascinating.

Are there any other clues about the response that have become apparent? eg played other music with a similar epic spiraling crescendo, or the track without the vocals, or even the track backwards.

I guess rather than experimenting to determine if there some discernable edges in the response, you just want all of your children to be happy and avoid any aggravation.

  • Sacha,

Heh. "Innocent" - I like that word. I guess we'd also have to test the hypothesis so beloved of our local online right about Auckland's daily rag.

We haven't made any major experiments. To tell you the truth, I'm reluctant to expose her to Darth Vader's march for fear she might join the imperial army. She just seems to be very affected by music - and don't get me wrong, mostly it makes her very happy. But a tune that seems sad to you is likely to have that effect on her too. The other day for instance she started bawling while singing along to "It's not easy being green"... (it was kind of cute).

Kind of? That sounds *aggressively* cute.

'It's Not Easy Being Green' is pretty amazingly poignant for something being mimed by a green felt frog puppet. It has an Important Message! (And then the next moment they'll be doing a hilarious giant pig-Viking extravaganza number while singing 'In the Navy'. The Muppets were so fucking awesome.)

Would she cry along to this? I wouldn't, of course. But, umm, I have to go now...<sniff>...

    "Why are there so many
    Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
    Rainbow's are visions
    They're only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some chose to
    Believe it
But I know they're wrong wait and see

    Someday we'll find it
    The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
    ..."

  • Rich Lock,

    Super classy, Rich

Wait. Rich, in fine form, tells a super-annoying MRA to bugger off, and you're attacking *him*?

Having caught up on 3-4 days worth of posts after the weekend, and mulled it over, I actually think it's appropriate for me to extend an apology for the way my comment was worded, if not for the point itself.

PAS is a rare oasis of civilised (if occasionally heated) debate.

In contast, there are several NZ general/specific interest forums (i.e. non-political) which I no longer frequent because they have effectively been taken over by the swivel-eyed nutter brigade - the only amusement to be gained from them is from seeing how many posts on the most innocous of topics it takes before the words 'nanny-state' or 'PC gone mad' crop up, or how quickly the most innocent of discussions can be reduced to a foul-mouthed slanging match. And that gets old reeeal quick.

I'd hate to see PAS go the same way, and to be partly responsible for it. So, um, sorry.

However, my point still stands. There are certain phrases (poo-words?) that are used across the political spectrum - 'feminazi', capitalist/fascist pig', 'PC gone mad', 'liarbore dykeocracy' etc etc, which primarily serve to indicate that the user is a parrot with no original point to make, and it is quite safe to tune out whatever they are saying. 'The demonisation of men' (or varients thereof) just happens to be one that presses my buttons harder than the others.

As a white middle-class hetero male, I'm not actually feeling particularly oppressed at the moment, Chuck old son. I'll let you know when it's time for me to join in the 'we shall overcome' chorus. Don't call me, I'll call you.

Yesterday I made a backwards version of hallelujah and it's not bad....It's refreshed my interest in a song that I have long felt overexposed to, even before what has happened in the UK as I've not heard it on TV/Radio at all in last 3 years.

With words and sounds slowly forming in the distance moving towards the listener, it changes from haunting into Hungarian.

Ah yes, the wonder that is Paul Williams -- the tiny thread that connects The Muppet Movie, The Phantom of the Paradise, Bugsy Malone, The Carpenters and Scissor Sisters.
