Suprised re your experience at the bar in Studio, I've run a few events there (easter weekender, foreign beggars/freestylers, mampi swift, b complex etc) and they have generally had at least 5 people on the bar + glassys, manager etc in the main room and been pretty damn fast.
From both a promoters and punters POV I think they are the best venue/sound system etc for that sized crowd. Though it is really important to get in early and sound check with that system.

A little difficult to comprehend that locals didn't know about Laneway--a bit like ten acre lifestyle farmers complaining about agricultural smells.
The latest Yen magazine (I buy it for my daughter!) has a cover-mount CD of Laneway bands.

Incidentally, if anyone wants a lift to Kumeu tomorrow, for the pick-nicker, we could pick up a passenger or two between Hammy and the NW Motorway.

Interesting. Because they were so plainly under-resourced that night.
The young barman also seemed woefully inexperienced. I'm always polite (but keen) waiting at the bar, but by the time I'd been standing there 20 minutes and and he was turning around and serving the guy who'd just walked up next to me -- twice! -- I was wondering what the hell was going on.

Thanks for the Tuhoe trial update Russell. I still find this a very curious and slightly disturbing case but hopefully, once it gets under way, we'll see where it's all headed.
Highlight of my live music experiences recently was Three Houses Down who had 5000 people singing along to Bob Marley within 10 minutes of coming on stage, before suddenly breaking it down to a massive funk beat with horns blaring. Loved it! -
I struggle to find sympathy for people who live in the central city and complain about noise levels. I don't care how old they are. Whether or not the developers should be roundly beaten (like drums or with drums I'm not quite sure) for the shit sound insulation is irrelevant, the central city is not a quiet place to reside. Trying to achieve suburban levels of tranquillity ain't happening, and I hope that noise control politely told the complainants as much.

I been thinking about the case(s) a lot this week, but I can't see it'll be possible to write properly about it now until after the verdicts.
From Jose's track, we had to remove stuff that had not only been broadcast on the 6pm news, but which the freakin' Prime Minister had said -- because the judge-only decision is under appeal and there might yet be a jury, who we must not influence. Other things came out of the discussion because they might potentially "scandalise the court". Something else was deemed potentially defamatory by our legal advisor. Phew.
One thing that's probably safe to say is that it will eventually be seen that not everyone involved did the same things or had the same motivations and interests.

Wearing my heavy hat of Council Elected Rep I'll just say yes, people living in town should expect some noise, and yes, the Laneway Festival was promoted all over the place, but there is a difference between these facts and potentially doing more preparatory work in letting residents know about any kind of festival and the potential noise.
People usually are accommodating given adequate time to know about an event, and knowledge of the implications of the event; perhaps if the gentleman over 60 who may not have appreciated the music would have taken himself off to somewhere for the major part of the day if he had known ahead of time.
I suspect something may have gone wrong in the communication...

Well, duh... :) I know the best laid plans of mice and etc., but there comes a point where shrugging your shoulders and saying "shit happens" doesn't cut it.

I agree with you up to a point, Matthew. Courtney Place or the Viaduct Basin is not the ideal spot if you're seeking a monastic life. For that matter, there are parts of Manukau and Wellington you don't want to live if being under very busy flight corridors gets on your last nerve. But I would respectfully suggest that the Laneway Festival isn't exactly a commonplace occurrence, which is pretty clear as (as Russell pointed out) it operates under a variance from standard noise limits.

The Council is meant to regulate building standards and has planning tools like its District Plan to reflect each area's characteristics and function. The developers find ways to build what's most profitable by doing the least that the market and the standards will allow.
However a lot of the worst apartments were created under the same lax rules that led to leaky buildings. It was also before many Aucklanders had ever experienced what living in the cbd was like, and with aggressive marketing by dishonest pricks like Blue Chip who were hardly going to tell them.
So the market was never going to influence decent noise insulation. and the Council at the time had a developer-friendly stance (knee pads) which resulted in the crap shoeboxes along the Nelson Street ridge and elsewhere. There has been some improvement since as both market and rules got more demanding.
Other world cities manage to successfully reconcile having residences and entertainment venues in their central areas. We get what we tolerate and vote for.

No Craig, I wasn't shrugging my shoulders. I was merely pointing out that I suspect a breakdown in communication. The second half of that sentence was orginally "I will investigate this and report back" but I thought it too impudent for readers of PA. So I will investigate and report back. OK?

And when the Auckland City Council effectively outlawed shoeboxes, at least one of the offending developers turned its attention to Wellington.
The challenge is where to draw the dividing line between cheap & cheerful, and cheap & nasty (which we've seen too much of in central Auckland and hopefully won't take hold in Welly). I'm sure Tom Beard can provide a 2ns opinion.
