  • Geoff Lealand,

instead of bringing in that ear-gratingly awful Geordie to replace him.

    That ain't singing. It's gargling!

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I am packing my bag ;-)

I'd been blagged backstage to see my buddies, and the headliners didn't really make much sense to me from the side of the stage?

  • Zippy Gonzales,

I'm damned if I can see the point of musichy.pe

I've got a gut feeling on this one. It's looks as if they're trying to bring back greater demand for EPs. Back to what Flying Nun did best.

No-one sells concept albums any more since the maximum length of music went from 45 minutes on LP to 80 minutes on CD. People are also buying songs digitally not albums. Sitting down to compose an 80 minute classic is a lot more daunting than one song, but you can't expect every song to be bread and butter. An EP, a four song combo might allow artists to explore more spontaneously whilst trusting the listeners to up the sales.

So it's aggregation at the product end like albums were, just at a more currently marketable level?

  • Rich Lock,

While we're talking about copyright, I'm quite amused by all the talk in the media around 'applying for copyright' for the tino rangatiratanga flag.

If anyone needs any help 'applying' for copyright, I'm more than happy to help out for my usual fee of $500. Cash.

Ahem. Just the one. And I didn't come empty-handed ...

The major calamity was me getting stuck with four $6 drink tokens after the guest bar closed early.

  • Glenn Pearce,

They sounded good from Point Chevalier – and, I am told, Mt Albert, Kingsland and a number of other suburbs.

Yet we couldn't hear a thing only 500m away in Westmere. I had to get on my bike and ride up to Old Mill Road. It was nowhere as loud as I was expecting even there.

All the action was in West View Rd, locals selling *tickets* into their backyards for between $15 - $25 and a brawl broken up by about 25 police.

The outrage that someone should dare to assume they have copyright over something they designed is quite bemusing, yes. Of course, you can have a good debate about the appropriateness of *exerting* copyright in this instance, but...

I decided I wouldn't bring the party down by blogging about that shemozzle, but, bugger me, what a shambles.

I suspect some of my liberal friends who reflexively welcomed the flag announcement at the time might now be acknowledging that the process could have, er, better.

  • Andre Alessi,

One of my team members is still having difficulty hearing normal conversations after the AC/DC concert. I did have a bit of fun at his expense though (as is to be expected, since I took my girlfriend to the much lovelier Cologne New Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra concert at the Holy Trinity church in Devonport last night and had to act suitably snobby as a result-there's a show on at St Matthew's in the City tonight, which I thoroughly recommend!)

    Me: How was it?
Co-worker: Great! There was this one bit, where they played this song...it has a rockin' guitar solo in it, what's that song?
    Me: Um...all of them?
Co-worker: Anyway, it was a really good song.

The Men-At-Work thing sounds even more tenuous than Worlds.Com suing MMO companies because they patented "virtual 3D worlds" first (Worlds.com is also apparently going after World of Warcraft and Second Life too.)* It's a shame that companies like this are being supported by the courts, as it means that genuine products being used by consumers already are suddenly threatened with unbearable financial demands from third parties.

    * - To be fair, there is some debate as to whether or not Worlds.com is an actual patent troll or whether there is some merit to their claims. I saw a reply to an article on MMORPG.com from a lawyer who specialised in games where he linked to a blog post of his that laid out pretty convincing arguments why the lawsuit was legit, but I can't seem to find it now.

EDIT: Found it. Contains a link to the original MMORPG.com article. Not exactly a slamdunk, but a good bit of perspective on the typical MMO-player's dismissal of any lawsuit.

I think what you can say is that in an official act of this kind, the issue of copyright should have been dealt with before the decision was announced.

It's just completely fucking incompetent -- as I said at the time, Key seemed to think saying "make it so" was all the constitutional process he needed. The fact that Ngai Tahu, Ngapuhi and others want no part of it doesn't help either. Annointing a "Maori flag" without formally consulting major iwi just beggars belief.

The most shocking thing about the the trust plan was that two of the three composers' families knew nothing about it until TVNZ broke the story.

Oh, I don't disagree. I can completely understand how it could have happened - the tino rangatiratanga flag has been used so much the question probably didn't occur - but that doesn't excuse the fact that it should have occurred to someone.

I was going to say, it's all well and fine to assert copyright if it's actually all yours. Metiria Turei is convinced there's a reasonable explanation to be heard beyond the media, but also seems to believe there is only one designer.

And as I said at the time, I still think a lot of people in the media-political complex need to get their fucking heads around the idea that Maori aren't Te Borg on any subject, no more than quote unquote "Asians", "Christians", teh gayz or laydeeze are.

And NOBODY (least of the all the Prime Minister) was trying to tell ANY iwi what flag to fly on their marae. That would have been an act of arrogant presumption that genuinely beggared belief.

Back on planet Earth, despite the Herald's recent essay in fatuous faux-patriotism, the Union Jack and that nasty Tino Rangatiratanga flag will go up various flagpoles tomorrow without the world ending.

So to calculate the worth of their idea (as opposed to the implementation) you'd take the median revenue of any commercial attempt to implement virtual worlds?

That'd be a nice round figure.

Don't be surprised if the flag that wins is the one that your kids and mine have been wearing for the past 10 years - seems they may have already worked this thing out long before us ...

...and it wouldnt have taken him long to figure out theres money to be made from it either

Yeah -- Metiria and I had words about it on Twitter this week. But it does seem clear there were three composers.

  • SteveH,

The outrage that someone should dare to assume they have copyright over something they designed is quite bemusing, yes.

I think people have trouble with this because flags are perceived to represent some entity or ideal so it feels like someone is trying to assert copyright over what the flag stands for. Oz had their own version of the problem last month when Google had to modify their Australia Day logo because they were denied permission to use the Aboriginal flag in it (http://www.news.com.au/technology/google-erases-aboriginal-flag-from-australia-day-doodle-on-homepage/story-e6frfro0-1225823647182). What's interesting is that flag is an official flag of Australia and yet is still subject to copyright.

Of course, you can have a good debate about the appropriateness of *exerting* copyright in this instance, but...

Well it does seem a bit cynical to say "look, here's this flag I designed that I want you all to adopt" and then later turn around and say "wait on, it's copyrighted, you can't make a copy".

  • Sacha,

    Well blow me down:

I spent a few weeks with TPK lookin' at which flags we should be considering, and that was a lesson in itself. We started with a whole heap of them, but because of intellectual property, ownership, and design issues, we had to cut back to just four - the NZ flag, the red ensign you see at some marae, the confederation flag, and the Maori flag (otherwise known as the tino rangatiratanga flag, or just plain "tino").

I ran into my old friend David Merritt in Cuba Street yesterday, and bought one of his hand-made books, geek prayers.

I had a similar run-in in January. I hadn't met David before (but have since discovered we have lots of quite disparate Facebook friends in common), but easily struck up a conversation with him about the geekful arts.

Oh, and Russell I don't disagree with you that the process could have been better. But I've to say the same could have been said of most of the MSM coverage -- which, IMO, reflected the rather tiresome need to reduce anything Maari-releated to a black-on-black cat fight when the realities are a lot more complicated.
