...and that would be Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra -- although maybe Auckland Philharmonica suits a blues-rock gig... :-)

I bear Op Shop no will-will
Will will would be a great name for a panda bear.

[in between running Friday tutorials]
Not local music, I know, but someone passed me on a CD called 'A Flowerdance Collection', which features duets by Nick Cave and Tom Waits. Can't find out much about it but it seems to be live concert recordings--including a wonderful version of 'Jersey Girl' by Tom and Bruce Springsteen.--and Nick dueting on 'Tam Gszie Bosna Dzi', which appears to be a Polish version of 'Where the Wild Roses...'I have it on repeat on my iPod but I would welcome any info on this collection.

free tickets in exchange for gug reviews
Send me a gug, she said. I'll review it.

Heard any good tunes lately?
I like the Cock and Bull Kid, On Your Own.

Unfortunately, the star blogger couldn't get the name of the band right. It's not "Little Bushmen" or "The Little Bushmen". The name of the band is Little Bushman. Perhaps this stuff should be left to the amateurs.
Someone is wrong on the internets!!
The paid blogger boiling my blood this week resides at the herald.
I've no idea where media find these several protesters who yell their homes were "destroyed" and they are "homeless" because of the Beijing Olympics.

It must be a phonetic spelling thing. you would think that phonetic would be spelled with a F
-
no relation by the way, at least as far as I know
-
I'm glad plenty of other people spotted the Bushman faux pas... made me glad I didn't bother to get round to entering the competition. That and I've pretty slack with the blogging lately anyway.

God Smiled, by lee Scratch Perry, remixed by Moody Boyz. Massive bass, wicked tune - out thru On U Sound. New Lee Perry album with Adrian Sherwood production on the way.... http://tinyurl.com/6aphmm
Also enjoying the new Quantic album, reggae vibes recorded in Columbia...

Yep. Phonetics in a New Zild accent... "I can't get the fush and chups bro, I'm writing this gug review."
-
The winning post is a short review of the Little Bushman show with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra.
Argh! That review is in desparate need of a subeditor! I almost cried when I read this bit: "although in my opinion i think the show was easier to appreciate when seated." Using both "in my opinion" and "I think" shows he has a lack of confidence in his writing. And then the one commenter who dares to point out a punctuation slip gets slagged off by Mort's fans.
And are there any good parties in Wellington?
Of course there are - it's Wellington! Um, not that I actually know where any of them are...

I thought it was 'Luttle Bushmun" must be something to do with the accent. ;-)

I bear Op Shop no will-will, but there's never been one of their songs that has stayed with me. I don't get it, basically.
Let me but in a good word for Op Shop. Thanks to Telecom I got to see them in Wellington a few weeks ago and <gasp> meet the band </gasp>. They put on a great show. Even penned a song for each venue they were going to.
Hope the rest of the tour went well for them. Hope they win.
-
I really hope they dont win. Is it just me or is One day just a complete ripoff (lyrically) of Stuff and Nonsense by Split Enz??
Considering two of the entries are famous because of TV ad's I really hope Phoenix Foundation or Liam Finn win... -
I thought One Day was a pretty good song, actually, in a MOR, wannabe-Coldplay sense.
Not music, but a good story about music. This new Simon Reynolds story about My Bloody Valentine -- finally a reunion worth the attention (unlike Gang of Four, Throbbing Gristle, Led Zeppelin ... er, Crowded House). The gig described in the opening pars -- in LA, 1992 -- sounds like it should make anyone's list of great shows they wish they'd been at. And if they're playing festivals, someone needs to start thinking about the Big Day Out. Anyway, the story:

This one's interesting, too -- the short version is that you give something away for free and people would still rather steal it:

A mate just sent me This from the Hot Grits. Banned, aparently, by TVNZ.

Parties a plenty, in fact The VBC is having an End of the World in light of the upcoming Loos Hadron Collider and the belief it is set to "gobble up the earth"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider
http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/It is on at the San Fran Bathouse tonight and features some good little upcoming bands, including The Damsels (Hamilton), Hoopla (Plamy) plus locals Sharpie Crows, Special Olympics and Dyke Dyke Dyke.
$10 and a fine way to welecome the end....So a good party and good new tunes all in one. Just thought I'd let you know.

Yeah I've never really 'got' the whole Op-Shop thing... I remember going to an NZ music showcase a few years back that featured them alongside Brooke Fraser, Evermore and Katchafire... And I'll be honest: I was BORED.
I had an admiration (and still do) for Katchafire doing as well as they are in that tough kind of 'pop-reggae/pop-dub' genre - a genre that I think Barnaby of the Black Seeds was almost disappointed to be recognized in at the b-net awards a few years back, "Best Pop Album... ummm, ok" where roughly his words on acceptance.
But Evermore and Op-shop blend together for me, they don't look the same or even really sound the same as such but it's just more of THAT... in a world that is swamped with THAT right now.
Sam Flynn Scott and anything he's putting his name too is some of the best stuff we're seeing at the moment, and I hope he gets some recognition at some point. Although Liam's fantastic and equally deserving.

That radiohead article is very interesting however impatience probably had a bit to do with it... didn't their server go down because it was so popular? Had I got round to wanting it really really badly on the day it was released (as obsessive Radiohead fans tend to do) then my first port of call would've been a file sharer probably - plus I would've known I didn't have to feel guilty about it if it was available free.

I like Bright Grey by the Phoenix Foundation and the way it begins always get me - especially when they play it live. But it's always been a mystery to me why they haven't made a video of 40 Years which is absolutely brilliant single material.
And ditto that about Sam Flynn Scott. His two solo albums are terrific - which also has to be said for Luke Buda's solo work.
It's funny. I've been revisiting The Chills and spent a weekend playing Heavenly Pop Hits compilation again and again. Original pop music that really endures and I can't help thinking that the Phoenix Foundation are the inheritors and now torch bearers of that sound.

The link to Mukuna mobile is broken... Cant seem to find a link on their site. Bummer.
I have never been taken by anything from Op Shop either...
The Madlib remix of the Madvillainy album is my favourite of the last month or so. Very strange but carefully constructed comic book hip hop with the lyrically bizarre and talented MF DOOM on the mic.
Its available for $9.99US in 360 kbps MP3 on the new stonesthrow site.
The site itself is great and they are adding more and more of the catalogue so check it out. The way the majors should be doing it... -
