  • Harry Musgrave, in reply to Jonathan Ganley,

    Wow - that was amazing...
I loved the drumming on it too with the very simple sounds used so effectively!

From Audioculture’s Bored Games profile, Jeff Harford’s pic of a very young Shayne Carter, next to the late Wayne Elsey, playing his school dance in 1979. What a wonderful pic.

Jeff Harford was Bored Games' drummer, so was probably playing drums when the pick was taken. I think the pic would've been taken using his camera maybe - probably by one Lesley Z Paris.

Good luck with that! Listed as tour promotional CD on Discogs.

I’ve been in a couple of similar conversations too, with one person telling me that we’ll find out what she’s really made of when the next album turkeys. I replied that we’ve already found that out – 9 weeks at number one will exist forever even if she never releases another note. Why do people need to do this?

Well, yeah... at least commercially, Neil Finn's high water mark was the first Crowded House album twenty seven years ago. Does that somehow invalidate or diminish everything he's done before or since? Is Crowded House somehow automatically shit because they got the deal with Capitol a few months after their first gig?

  • Russell Brown,

Only just noticed this Herald video of Lorde's arrival at the airport, which gives some insight into what media behaviour she was upset by.

She spends ages there, being interviewed, posing for pics and and signing autographs, but it's when the family tries to leave there's a problem -- especially when all the camerapeople start running and jostling and get between Ella and her family. I appreciate that a cameraman's job is to get every shot, but what was Heather du Pleissis Allen doing joining the bullrush? What was she hoping to get that couldn't be got by maintaining a little more dignity?

I suppose it's not that bad, but it's really pretty dumb behaviour. Calm down, everyone.

Quite - but I think it's worth noting some of the media types slagging off Lorde for being a "diva" because she posted - then deleted - a couple of mildly exasperated Tweets are very protective of their own families. One of the new co-hosts of Seven Sharp knows what I'm talking about. Ay, Mike?

To be fair, Hosking’s been pretty consistent on the privacy of others’ families too. But his reporter might have benefited from a chill pill.

Exactly - and I should have made that a lot clearer. Whatever else I'd say against Hosking (and I've got a lot) he's not only been "pretty consistent" but upfront about how your attitudes change when you and your family are on the receiving end of media intrustion.

  • Dastardly Bounder,

My family was on the recieving end of media attention after an international tragedy. In general the bigger NZ news agencies were respectful and in some cases incredibly helpful. It was the smaller organisations, or those with less command of the media sphere that were in trusive, camping out on the kerb outside our houses, assuming priveledge and trying to coldcall. The worst were the magazines who were sure someone in the family would want to benefit financially from the tragedy. "It'll be great exposure and our readership are truelly concerned and want to know more..." The same schtick they use to intrude on any private moment.

    Ahem

Wasn't a promotional CD - limited edition (500) made for their tour of the time on Archlife the Dunedin label which was associated with Arc Cafe down there.

Can't remember if it was formally released via the labels distributor to retail or just sold on tour - I do know I've a copy, huzzah! (sorry)

Oh, brilliant. I've heard great things about both nights and was going to ask if there was video, reviews, pics etc.

Can't track a review as yet but did come across this interesting (and lengthy) piece Great Still Sounds Great by Gavin Bertram in the ODT (Dec 2013) about the continuing interest in Dunedin music, e.g. the mostly cassette releases which came out on the Xpressway label, 88-93. He talks to Graeme Downes and Bruce Russell among others.
