All the action's in the north - nothing I'm aware of in Chc :-( Penny Lane or Galaxy may host something but when I last checked there was nada on the radar. Whoa, that will be a treat in New Plymouth!
We're also supposed to be over May as NZ Music Month - but in May we're getting a range of events down this way including first off on May 1, Minisnap + Martin Phillipps playing a rare solo set at the main library. Get it in ya diaries for May 23 the Axemen and Dark Matter at the Darkroom

Having read far too many of the Record Store Day is bad for "x" articles of late its quite heartening and not surprising that the sentiments aren't echoed by the surviving stores in NZ - most of the very real problems of the day don't seem to impact here at all except for those trying to get things pressed (the labels mainly).
If anything the opening of the Flying Out store and others all stepping up with some pretty cool inshore activities is sure to lighten a few wallets - gotta say a String Quartet playing in Showboat would be quite something to witness
The Taite, Record Store Day then music month... good times

Waaaah, in Nelson we're having our first ever RSD without an, um.... record store. With the demise of Everyman Records last year we're a soulless, musicless hellhole. Well, not quite, the good folks at Rhythm & Brown on New St are mixing up fine Nelson craft ales with a second hand records sale so pop on down there tomorrow afternoon if you're in the neighbourhood!

Ōtautahi stuff on Record Store Day - Galaxy Records has Bad Evil live instore ("middayish"), and rare and collectable vinyl from the vaults. Pennylane Records will be celebrating over the weekend too, Lyttelton's Delaney Davidson will sign copies of his limited edition vinyl release Diamond Dozen at the Sydenham store, 11am. I;ve linked to great articles from Simon Sweetman and Charlie Gates, there is one in The Press this morning from Vicki Anderson (I don't think Vicki's is online)
-
And yes Martin Phillips will be playing at Central Library Peterborough for the NZ Music Month launch gig. Yowsa! More about it here.

I was in Nelson last Saturday, damn, out by a week... meanwhile there are indeed RSD events in Christchurch
Penny Lane in Sydenham will host Delaney Davidson (signing copies of his new vinyl release, Diamond Dozen - hopefully playing a small set too) before he jumps on plane headed for Southbound in Symonds St.
At Galaxy Records, Bad Evil (don't know them yet) will perform in-store and Dave Imlay will I gather be 'dusting off a treasure trove of rare and collectable records from his vault and adding them to the shelves of his boutique store.' Handily, The Darkroom next door will be open for ales to toast RSD. Cool!

Hume annoyed…
Martin Phillips will be playing at Central Library Peterborough
…any chance Martin Phillipps might show up instead?
For some reason I expect libraries to get these things right – even the poster is wrong…
The memory jogger I use is Star Wars
- Martin is a solid gold ‘threepio, see…’;- )

Me too – I’m putting the above two vinyl treasures on Trade Me later today!
It’s been so long since I looked carefully at the Solid Krypton Hits record – I forgot I had done the label artwork lettering – and IIRC a cover treatment that was rejected for sailing too close to National Comics intellectual property… includes many Chchch luminaries Bill Direen and G.O.D. (Gordon On Drugs if I recall correctly) amongst others
The Fall in a Hole record is a legend (two records: 1 @ 45rpm and 1 @ 33 1/3rpm)

cheers for the link,. Here’s a great story by Murray Cammick that I dug out from Real Groove, 2001. An interview with Larry Morris of Larrys Rebels, about how he quit the band when their managers didn't book them any accommodation after a gig in Whitianga, and also the time he threw an apple at Howard Morrison on a live televised show and got banned from TV. http://dubdotdash.blogspot.co.nz/2015/04/larrys-rebels-no-sleep-til-whitianga.html

Ooh. Post the the link when they're up and I'll let some people know.

Over here in Melbourne the RSD phenomenon is seemingly getting bigger every year. I’ll be heading along to Northside Records which will be featuring a performance by Paul Kelly among others, which is a ‘nice’ parallel of sorts to Neil Finn performing at Slow Boat given the respective mana / history of each within their local scenes.
Anecdotally, RSD seems to be even bigger in the UK & US with many stores experiencing huge queues & frequently selling out quickly of those various RSD releases .. no doubt reports will surface on twitter, instagram and music forums
And good stuff re: the beatboxer plug – will check it out later tonight, I went to school with Benny G (same year) many moons ago

http://www.trademe.co.nz/music-instruments/vinyl/lps-33-rpm/other/auction-875030849.htmI know I'd get more for these on Ebay - but I feel connected, and that behooves me to release them back into the catchment from whence they were spawned.
Don't hold back folks, you know you need these essential discs....

yeah, but the poms seem to have developed an odd system where you form an orderly queue to get to a counter where you then ask for what ever you're after (not even knowing whether or not they've got it in the first place) which is possibly more seemly than the rush that occurs at Southbound, but it's far more long winded.
sadly I've got a funeral to go to, but after a quick morning hit and run I'm hoping to make Lazza at Real Groovy, that man's voice can still strip paint off walls.
and don't nobody get between me and the Lord Sitar reissue, I'm sanding my elbows and knees as I type. also finding myself oddly tempted by the Sound, Banshees and such, bands I haven't really listened to in decades. hmmm. -
Alan Perrott, in reply to
can I ask why you're selling them? I don't play my Fall in a Hole much (OK, never) but I kinda like knowing it's there.

also, just to toss a track into the mix, found this yesterday – it’s a live (and better) take on a track from an album of African bands recorded by Damon Albarn, Brian Eno and Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. this was Zinner’s project…he’s the palangi standing at the back.
there’s a co-joined doco coming out an’ all

I still have my Krypton Hits. I shall pass it on to my children who will listen distractedly to the attendant backstory before sticking it next to Godley and Creme's "Consequences" box set in the garage sale that follows my premature death in a home brewing accident. It is foretold.

I highly recommend reading long-serving Fall bassist Steve Hanley's recent memoir The Big Midweek. Crikey, talk about suffering for your art. Loaded with lots of great details, anecdotes and crossing paths with the great and the good.

let the purging begin...
Well much like your copies they've been in my care for 3 decades and I haven't had a turntable for two decades, I have them because I was around at their birth and were done by people I know, but they're not done justice by being unheard...
plus the whole pack up and shift out for EQC repairs grind showed me I have too much 'stuff' - some of which other people would really like, and I have to stop being a cultural objet orphanage - the only person making me do that is me - also it comes at a time when I am not really earning much at all from my 'skills' so I have to fall back on my possessions - and as I mentioned elsewhere on PA things are accelerating into the entropy spiral, - I was recently gutted to lose a box of rare underground comics to rot and mould (strangely apt now that i think of it) that i'd had since the '70s - ya have to listen to the universe - I'd like a quiet life with less stuff - finding new homes is the least I can do for best all round return...... watch this space - there will be some damn fine esoterica go by that will put smiles on someone's face.
Heck even the '60s and '70s Carl Barks Disney comics (the WG Publications ones from Oz that we all grew up with) are heading for new guardians...Everything must pass...
and to Ken D: the future is indeed a strange place
- having omitted to procreate this avenue is denied me..

Fall in Hole tour is legendary. Though a recording of the Mainstreet show, FiaH pretty well encapsulates the Canty. Uni Ballroom show too. I believe Chris Knox attended all the NZ dates and of course copped a lot of strife from MES for recording Mainstreet shows. Does anyone know if the Clean and This Sporting Life were also recorded? They we're a pretty damn good entree on both nights.
I picked up FiaH at Slowboat about 5 years ago. $90. But well worth it . I believe there was a second pressing so it may not be an original .
