This is a great track, can't wait for the doco.I really dig Bombino from neighbouring Niger. He played at our WOMAD festival this year. Here's Tar Hani, live from, I think in his home town of Agadez:

That is very cool :)

into the void...
I picked up FiaH at Slowboat about 5 years ago. $90. But well worth it .
Well if no one else bids, Jackson will have scored a well deserved bargain!!

Not quite as much hair now, but….
Speaking of old rockers …- and as Minisnap are playing at the library with Martin too – here’s a photo of (arguably) Paul Kean’s first band, the Basket Cases / Detroit Hemroids – before Toy Love and The Bats – live at the Gresham with Jane Walker on drums and Alister Parker (in his first post-high school band and before The Gordons)
plus just Jane drumming (includes The Hand of Paul!)
and Mark Wilson (Androidss)fun times…

A couple of years ago I threw out all my CDs, earlier this year I deleted all my mp3s. Now I'm 100% streaming, either Spotify or YouTube. It works.

There’s a lot to stream now – not just Soundcloud but great BBC and NPR playlists, even whole preview albums on the NPR site.
But I do still have an old-fashioned desire to own things, even files. I’m sure lossless files sound better when I hook up the subwoofer on the deck and my new ($88) car stereo has a USB port in the front. I can just fill a flash drive up with songs and it starts playing music whenever I start the car.
And it was nice putting on the original 1987 12” of Prince’s ‘Sign o the Times’ this morning (I got it at a record fair recently), just hearing how it sounded.

I get a sense that there might be more photos taken inside the Gresham than inside the Gladstone! I didn't realise Alister Parker was in the BC/DH.
BTW what was the camera Ian? One of those 'click and print' Instamatics? Many of my family's prints from that era came out with that infamous pinky-orangy hue.

While I’m freeing old frozen photons – here’s a couple of shots of Naked Spots Dance
Keep freeing up those photons! NSD eh. Saw them at the '83 Punakaiki Festival - a bizarre night when they played, Two perhaps three mud or body painted topless dancers - very King Kong-Skull Island-esque - and as I write realising Fran Walsh later married Peter Jackson!
It was a prelude to the Stones and their set - Andrew Schmidt on Audioculture description matches my recollection:
“We want to be God,” guitarist Wayne Elsey told the indie masses at Punakaiki festival near Greymouth in April 1983, before chopping out “a stunning version of ‘Fad World’, crammed with guitar improvisation.
I note on the Three Blind Mice the live recordings from venues like Rhumba and Victoria Uni. I'm pretty sure Rex Visible (whose Not Really Anything, in an early noisy VU form also played) and David Merritt recorded many of the band sets including the Stones. Coz they played Fad World the following week on RDU when they both (for while) hosted what became Sheep Technique.
I don't know what happened to those recordings. And I don't think I've ever seen captured photons from that event - but perhaps someone somewhere does?

what was the camera
Probably was an Agfa 'instamatic' - though these prints have aged like Kodak film/printing (probably printed at Jumbo Prints) - can't be certain.
I worked as a messenger boy at Agfa when I was in high school (in fact it was passed on to me by Peter Fryer - who went on to play keyboards with Bill Direen)I don’t know what happened to those recordings.
Let me get back to you on that, I have a recollection of having a copy... somewhere...

Getting back to the theme of this post, Penny Lane in Sydenham was absolutely humming yesterday. Armfuls of stuff, all vinyl half price (except DD's Diamond Dozen), heading out the door. Nice that the sleeve artists Scott Jackson and Sam Harrison happened to be on hand with Delaney during the signings.
I picked up a European pressing of Nina Hagen's Unbehagen. When I listened again to 'Herrmann hiess er' (Hermmann was his name), I thought, I've heard this before, and checked the archives of Radio With Pictures. The only opening title they appear to have is this later one ca 1984, Marginal Era's 'This Heaven. I was right - looking down the list of comments, 'Thee Trev Ov Palmerson North' (sic) noted the Nina Hagen sequence was his favourite
And from the same 'Era' (Fraserhead from The Joint, if you're tuning in) something that I thought was lost but captured by NZ On Screen is Iggy Pop's 'I'm Bored' filmed on his 1979 promotional visit.

I was pretty amazed to find vinyl copies of Humphreys and Keen’s classic The Overflow for $10 each at Marbecks yesterday. Got me one of them.
It was also nice to hear Lawrence Arabia play a bunch of new songs in his little set outside Marbecks in Queen’s Arcade.

Neither would surprise me…<edit: hmmmm see what ya mean - still 5466?>

We missed SJD at Southbound Records yesterday – arrived just in time to see people staggering out of a very hot, crowded shop.
But Sean was kind enough to offer names on the door for their Saturday night show at The Tuning Fork. So Jim and I went.
Firstly, SJD were brilliant. Just wonderfully relaxed and in command of their music. Some really top-notch banter with the crowd too.
Secondly, it was my first time at The Tuning Fork as a venue (it’s a kind of overflow room for Music Awards after-parties). It’s a weird space, but a very good one for live music. Because it’s part of Vector Arena, it has five metre windows, which have been covered with five metre drapes the length of the room.
The effect is like being in the live room of a studio – the sound is amazingly clear and detailed because it’s not reflecting off anything. Even better, there are relay speakers further back in the room and the stage is quite high, so sightlines are good. The bar (in contrast to the King’s Arms) is at the back and (in contrast to the rest of Vector Arena) it even has a good range of beer.
You wouldn’t go and hang out there, ever, but as a place to go and hear live bands play, it’s remarkably good.

numbering was 5468 first thing this morning
I’ve posted two comments – back to 5466!!<edit: stasis - still 5466>
trying to get my head around how a digital program could do this - I can see how a mechanical counter might 'seize up' or 'freeze' - but computers are our friends, they're here to help... just so long as it doesn't devour my organic data and presence. -

Nice. His solo sets at a couple of Chch libraries were a highlight of NZ Music Month in 2011. Will be good to hear these translate to a fourth album.
I also came across The Wastrels' The Jenner Affair and was reminded how fine a song Angels in Silence remains (with intro by Sharon Crosbie):

Sound & Vision has a cassette copy of 1983 Punakaiki Festival recording from Radio U done by none other than Mr. Blair Parkes.
Meant to visit and listen to it while I was there but ran out of time. Quality appears to be poor so maybe someone else has copies. I had dreams of releasing it somehow as a compilation.
Aside from Stones, it’s also significant for being a rare non-ChCh gig from 25c and a rare documentation of the brief period where the Gordons version II were called Sheep Effect. Also a very early recording of LBGP (earlier than Varsity tracks on Songs From the Lowland tape).

Maybe Blair knows how good the quality is.
