Ta: that’s it: Grenville. Tried to be boot boys but they weren’t really mean enough to compete with the Wainui boot boys. Music was noisy; I preferred the Gordons, who once played an epic weeknight at Thistle Hall when it was just an empty old Kiwi hall: hardly any people there and a wall of sound that pinned me to the spot. Best Gordons gig I ever went to. Must have been winter 1981.

Tentatively, yes... part of the Lotus Yoga Centre , which was upstairs, maybe... and you can still get the cookbook!
- but they've moved things round quite a bit up there since then
and I think there is a road thru some of it...

- I wonder if that old shabby Haberdashery (JH Moron & Son? or summat, looked like someone had walked out in 1950 and never went back) is still there?
Thistle Hall apparently still thrives though.

as far as Unrestful Movements were concerned, the singer was a bloody giant in megaheeled boots - only served to make their scrawny, if loose of limb, drummer look even more emaciated. good night if a little heavy on anti-flying nun banter. we kind of got after the first six or seven put downs.

Yeah saw them at a gig in Newtown Hall - 8 bands for 8 bucks

One skinhead lurched past me with a bruise on his face that had swelled up just like on the cartoon showsMan the 80's were shit for violence - not many places to go and lots of aggro compared to today - kids these days can drink til all hours and the worst thing is the hangover and an empty wallet. Back then you'd get smacked over for looking a bit different - these days I go out and there's people in goddam furry suits.

It was a serious business being unfashionably cool. Hard work. A feared Wainui bootboy appointed himself my protector after I chucked pots of chocolate mousse at him one night. It touched his stony little heart, and for years afterward if I found myself in a dodgy situation, he would pop out of the shadows and threaten the offensive party. Angels come in strange guises.
