  • Russell Brown,

    __Russell Brand as Ian__

Lets have RB as far away from anything as we can, ok? He can't act and isn't funny. I can do without him gurning at the camera every two seconds.

I downloaded an episode of Russell Brand's Ponderland last week.

    It was shite.

Couldn't be as bad as Little Britain USA -- even the ads are playing havoc with my usually somnolent gag reflex. HBO cancelled Deadwood, Carnivale and Rome so they could commission that shit? The new characters don't work; the old ones aren't tired, they've been flogged to death in contravention of international conventions against torture, and if these guys aren't outright misogynists it's the only impersonation that's at all convincing.

  • Deborah,

We *loved* Deadwood and Rome (bring me more Seth Bullock in a great coat, please, and Marc Antony washing) but Carnivale? Is good? We should be watching it?

  • Peter Ashby,

    @Sacha

Yes, I ADORED The Tommorrow People when it was first shown. But i strongly suspect I would cringe if i saw it again after all these years. Be good for the kids though, great concept, wonderful stimulus for the imagination.

  • Peter Ashby,

Little Britain was all about nasty sneering humour at the little people, the deffenceless, the weird, the marginalised. In essence those who couldn't hit back. Give me Bremner, Bird and Fortune any day, though I suspect you don't get that in NZ. Even That Michell and Webb Look.

  • James Harton,

I agree with others here, that why spend time remaking (or ruining) old shows and movies when there are so many unfinished stories out there. For example, the third series of The Tripods covering the material in the last novel in the series; The Pool of Fire was never made - there is, in fact, already a script!

I blame environmentalism - reuse and recycle seems to e the name of the game.

  • Hadyn Green,

On a slight tangent: Toho Co., owners of Godzilla, are on a litigation rampage in the states. Crushing all who stand in their way.

That policing is a full time job, in part because of Godzilla's uniquely embedded place in U.S. culture. Unlike E.T., the Predator or the slimy extraterrestrial from Alien, Godzilla is often regarded by the public as community property. People don't understand or believe that the character that first appeared in a Japanese black-and-white in 1954 is a closely guarded piece of intellectual property, and rarely do suspected infringers know that Godzilla's movie music and pictures are copyrighted, and that his distinctive features and name are trademarked.

Ooh, and Coming Soon (in 2007) Survivors The Return!

Seymour & Fleming have aged so that they now look like sisters. No sign of the welsh guy.

    Deborah,

Carnivale was excellent. It takes a while to start making sense, and some of the plot lines never get resolved because it was cancelled, but it's definitely worth watching.

And it's not just HBO who are out of touch. Firefly showed promise, only to be mothballed by FOX at its peak. The follow-up film Serenity acknowledged the fan loyalty, but still, the whole thing seems to illustrate some kind of inverse proportion between the quality/intellectuality of a show and the number of seasons it lasts.

But I have reacquainted myself with the original post & don't intend to double up on breaking news anymore.

I actually think it's one of those shows that works better on DVD. At the time critics were universally raving about the astounding production values -- and with a reported budget of around US$4 million a episode it should have -- but the narrative pace was glacial, and heavily serialised. (Ironically enough, the same critics were raving about Mad Men which I like, but hardly rockets along.) It requires some patience, but repays the effort IMO.

  • Kebabette,

Glad someone mentioned The Tripods and The Tomorrow People. I preferred the Tripods ... The Tomorrow People were all a bit snooty for my liking.

And no remaking of Blake's Seven. Please. The joy of Pearce and Darrow as Servalan and Avon could not be replicated. Acid bon mots ahoy. And they were the sexiest love hate relationship on telly ever!

a mate of mine just watched it in England and gave Survivor 4 outta 10 for effort.

sounds like more fond memories going down the crapper. bloody buggers.

apparently they've kept the aircraft sound in the closing credits but.

they better keep their hands off Children of the Stones or there'll be trouble.

Freaks and Geeks Freaks and Geeks Freaks and Geeks. 18 glorious episodes, cancelled unceremoniously after one season. I couldn't have loved that show any more if you'd wrapped it in bacon and served it with a side of strawberry daiquiris.

(I am still crushed that I will never see Haverchuck become a jock, or Lindsay as a proper Deadhead, or any of the gang become all New Wave. CRUSHED.)

I know how you feel, but you have to console yourself that you won't have to sit through another of Nick's cringeworthy performances of Lady L.
