  • Bart Janssen,

I am not due until *March*

Right moving on to names then?

Heh we got into the habit of calling our friend's bumps, Otto.

Surprisingly none of them chose to name the child that?

  • Paul Campbell,

Yeah my son was due in 'March' too, sometime near the end - he has a mid feb birth date .... be prepared (keep a loaded boy scout in your purse) .... we didn't buy anything until the baby shower (which happened after) - don't end up having to do what I had to do which was to wander panicked thru a baby shop buying anything that looked vaguely useful

  • dyan campbell,

Dental health... well it's nice to be asked, but the extent of my expertise is that I read dental journals while I worked a reception desk at a dentists' office when I was a university student... 30 years ago...

Don't know about toothpaste... I suspect it helps to loosen plaque, which is extremely sticky and difficult to remove - and the re-mineralising aspect of it would be useful.

Your teeth can be sound and your gums diseased, this is something to be aware of as you get older. They can fix any tooth, in any state - but they can't fix the bones under the gums, once periodontal disease becomes serious and bone loss gets underway.

One of the interesting things to emerge is the link between gingival health and general health - cardiovascular disease, arthritis, any auto immune disorder etc).

Gingival health of pregnant women is also strongly implicated in health of both mother and child:

    Gingival Health

Oral infection, especially gingivitis and periodontitis may affect course and pathogenesis of a number of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, preeclampsia and low birth weight. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate current status of oral infections, especially periodontitis, as a causal factor for systemic diseases.

Periodontal disease is a big cause of miscarriage and probably one of the easiest things to guard against.

There has always been a known link between good teeth and good health, but relatively recently it has become apparent this has nothing to do with being able to eat a wider range of foods (as was once believed) but more to do with the underlying periodontal health and the effect that has on the whole system. All illness is inflammation, basically, and bad gums are a source of inflammation that is constantly being fed into your bloodstream.

My childs dentist informed me a few weeks ago that we are born with mouths free from bacteria (makes sense) but we spread it to babies and children by kissing them, sharing cups etc.

Yes, and younger children often get decay earlier than their older siblings for this reason. Though most babies have picked up the pathogen one way or another before they have teeth.

Sofie - the salivia thing - I gathered from the journals I read the pH of an individual's salvia influences the rate of replication of the bacteria that cause dental decay, so some mouths are more hospitable to the pathogens than others.

Actually the bacteria only sort of cause the decay...

My sister & cousin (teachers, the both of them) used to tell their classes of kids (primary school) about how the bacteria themselves don't cause the decay... it's the bacteria poop that causes the decay.

The parents of said children reported gratefully that their children were now very dedicated brushers and flossers.

  • Josh Addison,

Right moving on to names then?

I took to calling our bump Josh Junior, or Joju ("even if it's a girl -- especially if it's a girl...") Unfortunately, this seems to have stuck among some of my friends, who don't seem to care that we actually gave him a real name once he was born.

Our birth story: we went for a hospital birth, but delayed going to hospital as long as possible. He popped out 45 minutes after we got there - there wasn't even enough time for my wife to get onto the good drugs. The only recommendation I can give is "have a small baby".

I was informed, with no room for misunderstanding, that 'Greville Spawn' and 'Podling' were not acceptable ever. :)

I've been a good boy since that conversation. Although it has been hard finding names that we like, and that work ok in both Danish and English.

  • FletcherB,

Anyone care to explain to Danielle about those "baby on board" signs we sometimes see on cars... and what they really mean.

I used to resent those signs... I felt they were trying to say they had precious cargo on board and could I please try extra hard not to crash into them. This seemed to be suggesting I wasn't taking driving seriously and had spare capacity to be extra careful, when in fact I was already trying as hard as I possibly could not to crash into any car, regardless of who or what was on board.

But they don't bother me so much now that I've realized the true meaning.... they are not a warning of them being in extra need of care because of they are more valuable than others.... it's a warning of them needing extra care on account of their own driver being distracted and being more liable than average of making stupid maneuvers requiring my avoidance...

  • Isabel Hitchings,

Big baby, small baby makes no difference - it's the position that counts. At least in my experience. My nicely positioned 9lb10oz second was eleventy squilion times less painful than my 6lb13oz posterior until the last minute first.

Also - Baby on Board signs. I'm pretty sure they come free with some carseats meaning you can let them clutter up your floor or feel guilty about dumping plastic into landfill or hang them in your car.

My parents couldn't be bothered with a middle name for me. All other siblings got variations of Maria.(catholics for ya) and Stansio, but me, well what do you put between Sofie and Bribiesca along with my Mother telling me I was adopted (when I wasn't) but that is her Irish sense of humour. She still laughs about that.

Or, as Marge said upon receiving one: "great, so finally people will stop intentionally ramming into our car".

Also - Baby on Board signs.

... were originally a fad because of a single incident where the mother was rescued from the car but the baby wasn't noticed and died. Logically the sign should come out of the car when the baby is not on board.

Of course when paired with the loser sticker it all makes sense.

Yeah. "I'm chronically short of sleep, probably distracted by a screaming thing in the back seat, and chock full of hormones that may (or may not) cause me to make irrational descisions" doesn't fit so well on an easy-to-read rear window sign.

True - I would also recommend plenty of time on hands and knees, rocking the wee dear into the right place. That was our midwife's instructions to my wife, and the little guy ended up the right way around without need for manual positioning.

Porn movies work for this - as recommended by my very knowledgeable midwife, who also provided said video at about 10 days overdue. Worked a treat ... gets all the right hormones working apparently.
