Detecting the selected text in the browser isn't an exact science, but this is on the list to investigate. We also thought about quoting all text from a post when using the reply button, however this might be confusing and/or annoying.

I think it just did it for me. O.o I don't recall pressing ctrl-v or typing in the tags, but there they are...

And again. Wow, Matthew. Now *that's* responsiveness! +100
Yep quoting all would be a pain because people just don't trim. But quoting selected seems to be great. Thanks

To be fair, Matt didn't actually know I was working on it when he posted that. :-)

Actually, seems the selection detection is easier than we thought. We’ve just added functionality for supported browsers to place selected text from anywhere on the page into the textarea when you hit the Reply button (the textarea must be empty, and formatting will be removed). Merry Christmas!

When there’s time, I also suggested a manual change ages ago – reduce the quote tag to <q>
Sacha, your lucky day. We've added this as an alias, it always bugged me too.

Yay. Works on the iPad too -- although selecting text is still very haphazard. Can take multiple attempts for some reason.

Copied from other thread, since seemed more relevant here.
Relating to what Russell said above, and my earlier comment on not being able to use the cursor on iPhone to edit text.
Might not help, but apparently Google Site has a similar problem, which they traced back to Safari for iPad/iPhone, rather than iOS.
As far as I am aware the iPhone/iPad browser does not provide the rich text editor that all modern desktop browsers do. There's a blog post on the Google Docs blog explaining about the editor in browsers - see Reference [1]
This editor is not in mobile browsers.

Ha, the selection-detect-reply wizardry just worked for me a moment ago with tarlen's post above - and then it didn't work again...
Like the shorter quote tags though!

Take it where you can get it, Tarlen :-D
+100 for you too. -

Did you already have text in the response field? It won't replace or append to the comment, only add the quote if there isn't anything there already.

Don't think so... I may have inadvertently had a space or something similar. Works perfectly now though. Thanks!

Ta. Now that's what I call service.

Trivial, but in-line links open in a new page, while personal links to websites or Twitter etc open in the same page. I'm of the 'target="_blank"' school. Others have any preference?
-
The new NEW look is - just sweet (as in, on the mark.)
Way less painful than the horrendously busy opening page of initially/up to a couple of days back, and almost everything appears to be working beautifully.
Have a couple of cool whatevers good people - the makeover has worked. The site works. The site rocks. -
One more request. Can you bring back the font size widget? It's ok when I read PA at work, because I have a relatively low-res monitor, but my nice lappie at home has a high resolution. I have my Firefox font size set well for the vast majority of sites for the screen resolution, but this one hurts my eyes. It'd be nice not to have to CTRL-+ and just have a cookie set instead.

I agree. I much prefer links opening in a new page.
On another issue, what would really make me happy is if clicking on the topic took you to the latest unread comment. Other sites do this, with designers not a clever as the Cactus Lab people I’m sure.

Steve, there’s a link to the last post in a topic right below its title in the listing views. You’ll also find your browser probably has a hotkey you can use to force links to open in a new tab or window, which is a better approach to take for internal links within a site.

Tracy, we considerably upped the default font size in this design, on posts it’s larger than the largest size on the old site. We don’t plan to bring back the size switcher as Ctrl-+ works well for users requiring a larger size. You could try disabling the Typekit faces (bottom right corner) to see if this improves legibility for you.

Ah, I see I wrote "latest" unread comment, which confused things. I meant to say that clicking on the topic would take you to the first of the unread comments, ie the first of the comments added since you last visited that topic. Or some other way to make it easier to quickly find where I left off. Thanks for the hotkey tip.

I like the idea of automatically remembering which page was last loaded, though that's as accurate as you could be. I suggested upthread using a Favourite function as a manual way to mark the specific last-read post, but I realise any solution will take some work.

My mistake. The best (only) way to jump to the last unread post is via the email subscription mechanism on each thread. Once subscribed, you receive a single email when a new message is posted to the thread (but no further messages until you follow the link in the email, to save cluttering the inbox). It might be interesting to look at a similar concept on the site for signed-in users.

Actually I don't think I'm right about that

Steve Parks, in reply to
I’ve visited discussion sites where if I go to the topic thread “Steve Parkes is a Jerk” and there are, say, 50 comments, the next time I log in to that site and click on that topic, it takes me straight to the 51st comment (assuming comments have been added since, of course). I’d assume you’d have to be a registered, logged in user for this to work, but it can be done.
Matthew’s subscription suggestion does just about the same, though, so no biggie. -
