I generally like the style of Steyn's writing. I did think he was stretching that article a bit.
By the way, if you don't like Steyn's journalistic ability (and I rate that higher than anything I've seen on this blog), then why do you read the stuff?

Steyn is a bigot afforded a veneer of respectability by the fact that he is sometimes used by respectable newspapers (although his relationship with the Daily Telegraph only lasted as long as the presence of his sugar-daddy Conrad Black), and that nasty little effort was all too typical of his "style". I honestly think he is a loathsome and mendacious commentator.
But are you suggesting I should only read people I agree with?

speaking of ownership, i remember a piece on mediawatch (radionz) some weeks ago re al-jazeera's english network. the point was made there as well about the difference of ownership by the sultan of oman.
i did end up watching a little bit of al-jazeera in malaysia, and was quite impressed. not only did they have actual news (ie none of the tabloid nonsense like anna-nicole's baby's father), but they covered the globe. there was in-depth coverage of south america, africa, asia, & the middle east. i watched a piece on the one-legged soccer team of congo - which was a very moving piece about the effects of civil war in that country, the practice of chopping off limbs, the trauma faced by these young men, and how the soccer was being used as therapy to help them come to terms with their personal tragedies.
the coverage was balanced, eg they had amnesty & other human rights groups interviewed about the sham trial of saddam hussein & the sad joke that was his execution. they followed this with coverage of saddam's brutality towards the kurds.
what i liked best though, was that they ALWAYS used local reporters - a somalian reporter broadcasting from somalia on the civiian war there, brazilian reporters broadcasting from brazil etc. it meant that you had reporters with an in-depth knowledge of the culture & history, who could give a much better report than an outsider.
brought to home the advantages of a news organisation without a "maximising shareholders' returns" motive. wonder how we can get al-jazeera broadcast here...

Seems to be a pattern.
The EPMU had similar troubles with Air NZ when they adbusted the logo to make a pair of scissors to make light of the airline's attempts to axe 1700 ground staff.

Unfortunately the union had to back down because of the cost, but it really shows the danger to freedom of expression and political dissent.

Steyn came to public attention as a waspish commentator on musical theatre. He became a political commentator later and only became famous for that because of his strident tone after 9/11. He is popular with the Right because of his consistent anti-Muslim attitude and his jeremiads about Europe being overwhelmed by Muslims. He is not a journalist.
Air New Zealand; doesn't copyright law protect parody as a legitimate form of expression? By identifying Dan's piece as parody, isn't You Tube admitting there are no legal grounds for their decision? Not that it is unlawful: they can do what they like.
The Guardian: maybe, just maybe, a lot of its online success is due to content being free and also the paper encouraging discussion on its opinion pieces. I largely gave up on the Independent because so much was subscription-only and the Herald seems to have reversed its subscription policy. As Public Address System shows, readers want access and participation.

I thought DPF was celebrating because here in NZ the Right benefits from the fact you have to go out of your way to be confronted with Steyn's idiocy and also that the Left has no such advantage with Fisk.

Sorry for the self-promotion, but I've got a take on the Virginia Tech shooting that has nothing to do with gun control, Islam, geographical confusion (Korea, China, whatever), or whether I'd have the stones to take on a lunatic armed only with a fully-loaded fountain pen and a legal pad.
Along with the podcast, there will be (when I pull finger from arse and get it finished) a transcript, along with special extra features: Links to stories alluded to, other pertinent and thoughtful commentary, and some rather moving commentary from the more obscure corners of the blogisphere.
Also, if anyone is feeling pretty masochistic, I'm finally about ready to re-launch my not dead, only resting blog High Windows (virtual chocolate fish to anyone who knows where the title came from). The idea is to try being someone who can be passionate without being shrill and self-righteous, political without being a total ideologue, and something like Wordsworth's a Happy Warrior. Failing that, let's see if I can be an amusing pleasant way to waste a couple of minutes. :)

Love Larkin, but his stock seems to have devalued enormously since his death for all the wrong reasons - bad politics, misanthropic, something of a chateau-bottled shit when it came to women etc. Bad day when our poets have to be saints as well.

And I swear I picked up the Larkin reference without the use of google, but did have to do a search to get the words right. I have to admit High Windows, and the old classic: 'They fuck you up, your Mum and Dad' are the only works of his I'm familiar with. I'm more of a Tom Elliot fan.
