  • Rob Stowell,

Ok so Dilmah tea goes off the shopping list. I don't want to support companies that support Investigate's rubbish. I'd be very interested to know if there was church support of some sort as well.
While I reckon Wishart has moved rightwards over the last decade, he has a track record of attacking govts and perceiving conspiracies on all sides: I don't think anyone in politics is gonna defend him.
The bigger issue is how the MSM are "using" him. The big SST front-pager on what "investigate" was about to publish about Clark/Davis wasn't the start, but it was a clear step over the line.
This Drudge-like symbiotic relationship with the MSM needs to be clearly identified, discussed and preferably stopped. The msm are using IW but there's no doubt he's gonna sell a lot more with all this publicity: it's a nasty circle. It's hard to jump on individuals in the msm- who face a lot of sales and competition pressure- but every one of the big editors needs to step back and think clearly about where this is going.

  • Riddley Walker,

you're right Rob, the msm definitely share a large portion of culpability too for using IW in this way.

it'd be interesting to looking at the Companies Register for any EB associations with any of his advertisers - EB are widespread throughout the building, construction and related services industries. google each advertsing company's director's name in concatenation with an EB search parameter and it'll show up if a connection's there.

in the mean time, remember Dilmah is Truely Ethical Tea. anyone hear the RNZ piece (I think by simon mortimer) about the dubious nature of that advertsing claim?

Amusing to see that the Prime Minister is now openly fucking with Wisharts head.

I guess she has to take her fun where she can get it.

  • Riddley Walker,

    that's a classic DM.
and how very standard right wing MO to sling the wildest abusive shit every which way then squeal like a stuck pig with self-righteous sanctimony about the slightest perceived transgression of good manners by their opponents.
hmm, that reminds me of another PAer.

i heard IW suggesting on RNZ this morning that Clark was paranoid for thinking there were people targeting her. he said the same (or was it a National fluzey) when she made claims a PI was following her and her husband. that was before Wishart's investigator Igour was sprung.

  • simon g,

By accident or design, Wishart also had perfect timing. The ideal is to have maximum publicity for the mud, but much less for the response, as other stories crowd it out.

    This week's official news diary:

    Monday: Bestiality
    Tuesday: Bain
    Wednesday: Bradford
    Thursday: Budget

Idour could have written a signed confession yesterday and it still would have had less publicity than "Cullen roots chickens!" or whatever it was.

  • Nobody Important,

Yikes, I'm starting to think David Bain might have done it!

Do you really believe that? That some stranger walked into the house, conveniently while David was on his paper run, knew where to find the gun and ammunition and some opera gloves, committed mass murder, did some of Robin's washing, and then logged onto a computer to say that David deserved to stay?

Someone else has answered Anne's suggestion (playing Devils Advocate perhaps) that some one else might have done it. But it's made me think.

The computer was turned on circa 6.45am and the message (You were the only one who deserved to stay) left on screen. Both defense and prosecution have argued about the timing since David was finishing his paper round circa 6.45am. A witness evidently saw David finish his round at that time.

But even if the defense is correct about the timing then Dad must have only just finished typing the message and topped himself moments before David walked in the door. And no-one heard the gunshot? Not even the witness walking by who saw David? Seems highly unlikely. Add in that David washed his clothes before discovering the bodies (he says) and it just gets curiouser and curiouser.

Curious also that Bain did not proclaim his innocence outside the court yesterday, with all the media there. It would have made a nice soundbite (I did NOT do it!!). I've been flipflopping all over the place on his guilt or innocence - I think we need a retrial.

Danyl - it appears from the comments in that thread that Wishart either misheard Clark, or is deliberately making mischief.

what i've never understood about this line of "evidence" is that it is not hard to change the CMOS settings on a computer to jerry whatever time the machine "thinks" it was when it did something, without leaving a trace of the time adjustment.

  • Kyle Matthews,

I think you've nailed it there, NI. It's funny how some people are saying that Robin was deranged. Right, so he was so deranged that he thought that David was the only one who "deserved to stay" (why not deserved to live?) and logged on to a computer when he could've written a note the night before. That's not including washing his clothes while David was on his paper run. As others have said, why did Robin - apparently wanting David to stay/live - leave behind evidence implicating David but not himself? One handwritten note and David would've been in the clear.

I read Karam's book David and Goliath a number of years ago. To me it cast a reasonable amount of doubt on the police case, but it didn't put the case strongly enough that Robin was the killer. It was a stronger case for saying David shouldn't have been convicted than it was for proving Robin was the killer.

I still could go either way on which of them did it. But the question of 'why Robin left David alive' isn't particularly relevant to me. For a person to kill his wife and three children, there's clearly something very fucked up going on there. The answer to leaving David alive could just be as simple as, once he'd killed four people, realisation struck him and he decided to kill himself, and left a message for David (it certainly wouldn't have been for the cops or the wider public) simply because David wasn't there, so didn't get shot. Or it could have been David who committed the crime, and the message on the computer was from the voices in his head. The same with the washing. If a person kills numerous members of their family, they're clearly fucked up enough in the head that the next thing they choose to do could be put some washing on. I'm not sure if we should apply 'sane logic' to the actions of people who slaughter their own family.

    I really don't think we'll ever know.

    Poor Mr Wishart

    He seems to think

" Might be death to him. "

    is a sentence,

"Might be deaf to him" Mr Wishart, "Might be deaf to him"

The phrase Leaping in like and ill-trained puppy springs to mind.

    Re:

    inverse elitism = redneck populism

Investigate is calling for an inquiry into the police, which would mean that you think the police are not a serious entrenched power, but rather agitators for protection of vulnerable groups.

  • Finn Higgins,

Ads in the latest in Investigate

    ... snip ...

So he does sell lots of high value advertising targeted at wealthy individuals. Mind you, it's quite possible that some of his advertisers support him for non-commercial reasons.

Fascinating. Thanks for that - I had intended checking when I was in town yesterday, but instead got sidetracked.

With that lot he's certainly not going to be poor - assuming they're selling pages at a decent price, rather than bargain-basement. As a magazine it always looks better to get the advertisers in, even if you do them all a "special half-price deal" against your theoretical rate card - nobody wants to be the only advertiser.

Ridley has a point though - why on earth would a bunch of those think that alignment with Wishart is good for their brand? Holiday homes and ownaship.co.nz is one thing, but Dilmah? Epson? Cambridge Audio? Thai Airlines? Do they actually know what they're advertising next to?

  • Riddley Walker,

Investigate is calling for an inquiry into the police

yeah, well i guess it depends on which police IW thinks need investigating (i don't recall him championing an enquiry into the Rotorua allegations), and what interests IW's targets might be threatening (if I recall correctly his target had supported an investigation into allegations regarding officers who targeted vulnerable groups).
IW clearly has no qualms with information provided by Igour.
I guess he just has an odd view of what bent means, but then he may also think that the earth is flat and was made in 7 days.

That some stranger walked into the house, conveniently while David was on his paper run, knew where to find the gun and ammunition and some opera gloves, committed mass murder, did some of Robin's washing, and then logged onto a computer to say that David deserved to stay? No, the killer is either David or Robin. Not even the Joe Karam or Bain's lawyer has suggested that somebody else is the killer.

I don't 'believe' that anyone did it - I've no idea at all who did. Frankly I'm inclined to agree with Kyle when he says

    I really don't think we'll ever know.

Wasn't computer-turned on/off evidence used in defence of Mark Lundy (guy in Manawatu prison for murder of wife and daughter) and dismissed by the prosecution?

  • Ben Austin,

Well Idour doesn't seem to be a particularly discreet kind of guy. Given how small a town Dunedin (socially, excl. students) is I expect we'll see a lot more of this kind of revelation if an enquiry comes out. I can't believe that Wishart would use someone so tainted as a source - any investigation on W's part should have shown that even if Idour is right, he is too good a target for people to attack.
