  • Sofie Bribiesca,

It was only after I got off the phone that I realised that they'd wanted the information to add to my file so that they could get IRD to take it out of my salary.

Baycorp is another baby the Justice Department do and that data base goes all over the show.

    are we agreed?

    Absolutely

    It's not an excuse, but

, but nobody is perfect also and I haven't found nobody.

  • Russell Brown,

    Can I suggest a bus?

Well you've been impeccably holier-than-thou so far, so don't stop now.

It's easy to "suggest" a bus. In practical terms that means at least another unpaid hour on top of the three or four you'll spend prepping for and broadcasting your show. And, for music-heavy shows, a hell of a lot of bag-lugging.

I don't think anyone's asking for a medal, but it's actually not unreasonable to drive a car in those circumstances.

Thank you. I just figure if you can't park properly and it causes 'issues' for yourself or others you should probably look for an alternative means of transport.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Meanwhile, did someone at the Herald website change the headline on the story RB linked to to Payback's a perk for DJ, or have I just noticed it?

Either way, very naughty to drop the P-bomb unless Havoc's "celebrity justice" included a taxpayer funded tiki tour with his "girlfriend" to Paris, with a stopover at the Disneyland of his choice on the way home.

No, I think it was that from the start.

Cool -- but am I the only person who thinks "perk" was a pretty inflammatory and misleading poo word to throw in the headline, full stop?

It was silly and unsustainable, yes.

  • Russell Clarke,

Yes but given the propensity for that particular organ to relate the un-relateable, I'm not surprised.

  • Damian Christie,

It's easy to "suggest" a bus.

It certainly is, especially when you do a breakfast radio show, starting at 6am or whenever, and live miles away like Mike did at the time. I'm not sure if there is a 4.30am bus from way out West to the University of Auckland, but I doubt it.

Sure, no-one's exempt from paying for parking, and I'm sure many people have managed to do years at bFM without amassing tickets. But as Mike admits, he's not perfect, and it wouldn't take too many tickets before it all seems a bit hopeless.

Community service isn't PD. It's not digging ditches and breaking rocks in the hot sun. I've done it before, helping scouts and working for the blind. Both were reasonably pleasant - but not so much that I'd want to do it for free if I wasn't paying off my debt. I'm sure Mike feels the same way about DJing in the quad. Especially now as people will know why he's there.

  • Russell Clarke,

Fair enuff - given those circumstances a bus certainly ain't gonna fly, so to speak. Perhaps a reserved car park is in order.

  • Gareth Ward,

I suspect that being a working DJ getting paid for gigs, playing to the quad for hours for nothing would feel quite a lot like punishment...

  • Dinah Dunavan,

Last year I was driving a friend's ute so that it could get some time in town with its "For Sale" sign. They got an offer from a local man so I delivered it back to them.

A month later they got a bill for a (supposed) parking ticket from a privately run car park in central Dunedin.
Of course they suspected me! Moi?!
On careful checking of the details it turned out that the ticket was issued on the day after I returned the ute to their place (some 80kms away) and that the ticket was issued for a parking area I haven't used in 5+ years (since the supermarket it used to be closed).

All I can assume is that the parking company had managed to write down the wrong rego, and matched the rego to car description at a later time. They couldn't produce the original ticket. I wouldn't be so crass to suggest that it is their practice to manufacture bills for parking tickets in the hope that unsuspecting punters will forward a cheque without checking.

If a council (or that private company mentioned above) sends me a letter telling me to pay a parking ticket I will bloody expect to see a copy of the original ticket so that I can verify it.

  • Russell Brown,

This all reminds me that I once had a warrant issued for my arrest over a parking ticket I never knew I had.

It took about 18 months for a ticket incurred in Timaru when I was working there (Timaru had particularly zealous parking wardens) to escalate to the point where I got a call at work from a wharf police sergeant in Auckland telling me there was a warrant out for me.

He seemed to regard it as my fault that he'd had such a job finding me. Clearly, not a Rip It Up reader.

My brother got a parking ticket in Temuka. Given he spent half the year working overseas travelling between often remote farms, we had bailiffs at my mother's door before he knew he had it.

All I can assume is that the parking company had managed to write down the wrong rego, and matched the rego to car description at a later time. They couldn't produce the original ticket. Nor would I. But the same thing did happen to my mother. Fortunately we could prove where she was, which was not the city six hundred kilometres away where she'd been ticketed. Also the women in my family are not short on ovarian fortitude. But I can imagine a lot of other people would have taken the far less aggravating route and just paid it.

  • Steve Barnes,

Good on ya Mickey, it's about time the DOJ was held to account.
Back in the dim and distant land that is 1995 around 1 o'clock in the morning, I heard a knock on my back door.
Thinking nothing other than "who the F could that be" I answered the call, "SMACK" straight in the face, then a kick to the stomach and then darkness. My partner heard the commotion and, on seeing the situation, called the Police. She held onto them by the scruff of the neck, the cops were there in seconds and they duly arrested said assholes. It turns out that they were owed money by an "acquaintance" who told them that I had taken their cash, bullshite.
Anyhow. Court date arrives and they get $400 fine and $400 reparations each, to be paid to me once the court had received its share.
A couple of years back I received a letter from DOJ demanding payment of a $400 fine for "No rego., no warrant and parked on a grass verge. The details were familiar to me because I had dealt with this fine twice before, once about ten years earlier and once about three years. The incident dated back to when I had traded a vehicle in at a dealership and the ticket was for when the car was parked outside a wreckers yard awaiting its final journey. I still had all the paperwork, both the papers on the sale and handover of the vehicle and the letters from DOJ pertaining to the quashing of the fine. At this point you would think that would be all that was needed to sort out the problem, yes?.
    No.
When I first called I was asked for name, address and DOB before anyone would listen to me. Then I was told to send all the original paperwork to them so it could be sorted out. Yeah, right. I told them I would send copies, they said they would have to be notarised copies, I said they should check their records.
Geez, this is getting long and boring eh?
Anyway. I reminded them about the $800 reparations due to me. Oh, they said, I'll just put you on hold.
Another person came on the phone. "Can I have your Name and date of birth?"
"I've just done all that" I said.
"Yes well, Name, date of birth"
So I do it all again and then...
    "Mothers maiden name Sir."
    "What?"
    "Mothers maiden name Sir"
    "Why?"
"We have to make sure you are who you say you are Sir"
"OK but do you have my Mothers maiden name"
    "No Sir"
"So how does that tell you who I am?"
"If you don't answer I will hang up Sir"
    "You're building a database, aren't you?"
"Are you going to answer my question Sir?"
    "No"... click.
I called back several times until I got someone reasonable. I sorted out the fine, until the next time anyway. As for the $800 reparation, I am still waiting.
And yes. I will shut up now.

  • Paul Campbell,

Happens the world over - I got a ticket when I lived in Oakland - from the San Jose airport for a car that was different colour from my truck - I did all the by-mail appeals etc but couldn't persuade them that it wasn't me and couldn't afford the time off to contest it in court - I had to pay it.

BTW - in California you can't convict someone without a trial what technically happens with parking tickets is that you pay the bail and then skip out on it - that's the fine.

Yup, all a bit Kafkaesque for my liking but it turns out that they were using the "confirmation" questions to build a database.

Wait, Timaru had a parking problem when you worked there? I wasn't aware it had a great need for parking wardens now...
